The Pistons are also my favorite team. Troy Weaver did leave the team in a better place with the cap space. Drafting Hayes over Halliburton was a bad move; but I heard that Weaver did not have a lot autonomy to pick whom he wanted who supposedly was Halliburton. Great content; there are not too many channels like yours on You Tube.

I could believe that. Lots of reporting suggests that hiring Monty Williams was not Troy Weaver's decision, so I'm sure there are several decisions over the years that weren't up to him. But I think he did a good job drafting the core overall and keeping their cap sheet clean over the years. And thank you! I appreciate the feedback.

Great video and excellent breakdown of the team's cap-space and options. I think this would be a step in the right direction, and every trade you mentioned (while not my favorite) makes a lot of sense from a logistics standpoint. Hard to find basketball content like this nowadays!

I don't know how often you profile the Pistons, my favorite team, but you have GREAT content bro! I appreciate your research. You are very thorough. Troy Weaver didn't do ANY of this during his tenure. Asset management was his undoing, but drafting Killian Hayes over Tyrese Haliburton didn't help. One transaction you may have missed is Cade's extension. They will probably do that this off season.
@YossiGozlanNBA
@YossiGozlanNBA 3 месяца назад
Thank you! I really appreciate all that. I'm definitely more optimistic about the Pistons going forward, though obviously, time will tell if things are truly changing for the better. I didn't touch on Cade just because I wanted to keep the focus on their cap space plans. I could do a follow-up video on them depending on how their offseason shakes out which would include analyzing his likely max extension.

Lonzo and THJ are also on expiring contracts which will make them interesting contracts as it will open up more cap space next season or if they want to trade away THJ to for some more assets.
@YossiGozlanNBA
@YossiGozlanNBA 3 месяца назад
Exactly. Even though CJs salary and a Cade extension would take up a bunch of salary next season, they’d still have significant 2025 cap space.
@Crymson1

@@YossiGozlanNBA Even accounting for a 10% increase in the cap, spending $38 million on Cade's extension will leave them with very little cap space in 2025.
@Crymson1

You've built a team that will likely be the worst in the league again, has parlayed most of its flexibility into unimpressive future assets, and will continue to depend almost exclusively upon internal development. The starting lineup won't be able to play defense, there isn't a single power forward on the entire roster, it's absolutely clogged in the backcourt (to the tune of six guards), they'll have two centers who both struggle defensively, they'll have traded away Grimes (for no good reason, given that THJ won't be in the team's long-term plans whereas Grimes very well could be) for a considerably worse defender in THJ who's much older, they'll have little cap space next offseason given that Cade's extension will eat up pretty much all of it, and, all told, the reward for handcuffing themselves to this roster for several years will be pick #11 in a weak draft and a 2025 Dallas 1st that could easily be within a few picks of the 2nd round. I don't see it. This looks like the Pistons just being used as a dumping ground in a way that benefits them not at all unless one of those picks blows its projection out of the water.
@YossiGozlanNBA
@YossiGozlanNBA 3 месяца назад
Obviously this exact plan won’t happen and it’s not perfect. I’m just trying to illustrate how they could very well end up using their cap space as opposed to traditional free agent signings. And FWIW, the Pistons and Mavs have discussed swapping THJ and picks for Grimes, per Marc Stein.

More of the same The pistons are garbage men for unwanted contracts deandre Jordan , Joe Harris , Trevor ariza. Freaking why do you think Dwayne Desmond is still on their payroll. The only good one was kemba walker that got us duren. The problem is all we ever get is 2nd rd picks for these kind of deals.
@YossiGozlanNBA
@YossiGozlanNBA 3 месяца назад
Signing Jerami Grant and then parlaying him into the selection that became Jalen Duren was extremely savvy. They deserve a lot of credit for that considering the initial signing of Grant was polarizing. You make very valid points about taking bad contracts with seconds, but there seems to be some reporting that they’ve passed on first round compensation at various points. The most confounding one is not capitalizing on Bojan Bogdanovic, they supposedly could’ve gotten a first for him, maybe two. Makes me feel like they’ve passed on more opportunities in the past to get premium draft equity through salary dumps over the years.

As a pelicans fan im okay moving on from CJ but I wouldnt trade the 21st pick to do so... Stewart is basically Larry Nance nothing special... Pels could trade 21 for Capela and have a better player then Stewart.
@YossiGozlanNBA
@YossiGozlanNBA 3 месяца назад
I get it, but I think the Pelicans probably need to trade a first to get off CJ’s contract. At least they get a good rotation player as well in Stewart. The good thing about this trade is that they save so much money that they could fit Capela afterward. I don’t think he will cost a first, the Hawks might end up having to give him away because they desperately need to save money. Maybe something like Nance and some seconds afterward works, so now you have Capela and Stewart as your big men.

I think the CJ McCollum trade is good but adding Tim Hardway Jr, and Lonzo is duplication. It doesn't make good basketball since. Hardaway is primarily a shooting guard whose numbers are down across the board and doesn't play good defense anymore. I don't believe Detroit would do both and trade away Grimes. Lonzo Ball is coming off a horrid injury that saw him miss 2 years. That's a hard no. That's an objectively bad trade for a team that needs 3 and D wings and trades one away for a older broken down version and signing another. This is the worst offseason plan I've heard. Like the picks but the plan doesn't even help solve their major issue which is development. They need vets who can contribute. Detroit is not trying to tank. They are trying to build around the young core. How does adding 3 guards to a team with 3 guards already help. I get it you don't know enough Pistons and what their plans are so I don't fault you for using them as a dumping ground for bad contracts for picks but that isn't their goal. D - on these moves and that's only because of the picks.
@YossiGozlanNBA
@YossiGozlanNBA 3 месяца назад
Fair enough, I agree the veterans I brought in are very imperfect, but it was all about the picks. Trajan Langdon said himself that they want to use their cap space to acquire unwanted contracts with draft picks and assets. Getting picks and players on expiring contracts who could also help don't always go hand-in-hand.
