Season 5 Episode 1
This season of Legendary Adventures Podcast is all about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time. Each episode will explore a dungeon, and my gameplay leading up to that dungeon. Then we'll take a look at the game world, and the legacy of Ocarina of Time. In this first episode of Season Five, we're looking at the development of the game. The developers say it was challenging, but it resulted in one of the most influential video games ever made.
Legendary Adventures is a Legend of Zelda playthrough podcast. I’m exploring the evolution of the Zelda game series by playing through each game in release order, excluding spin-offs and multi-player focused releases. Each season focuses on one game in the series. Legendary Adventures was conceived and launched as an audio podcast. I am making video versions of episodes as I am able. You can listen to all my episodes by subscribing to the podcast.

The opening theme kind of sounded like music that you think about as you grow over the years, which is exactly what this game is about. It also is ironic how this game accurately depicts real life where things are so nice and easy when we are kids, but become very dark and gloomy when we're adults.

I remember reading once that at the time of release, OoT was viewed as a patent machine for Nintendo. It advanced 3D gaming with so many industry firsts, far more so than Super Mario 64. Much like how every modern shooter has a bit of ancestral DOOM and Quake ‘DNA’ still in terms of mechanics (and sometimes even code), many action-adventure and open world games still use game mechanics that were first introduced in OoT.

@@ItApproaches TOTK misses on so many core elements like the story, dungeons, puzzles, characters, items/equipment, side missions, musical instrument, and music. I do think the abilities and gameplay were fun and innovative tho. The open world is sparse and boring and just a big gimmick that falls flat after 30 hours. Nothing will ever compare to OOT and MM. The thing a lot of recent players probably don’t realize is, while the game itself is amazing…the GLITCHES in this game were also some of the most wild ever seen. The whole bit in the end with the master sword glitch at the Gannon fight turned it almost into an extra “level” to enjoy. Nothing to accomplish…but more of like a playground where anything could happen. Hook shot flying. Sky swimming. Driving epona remotely. There was so much. I’m pretty sure it became the main reason we got so many playground rumors around that time. Edit: one thing I wanna point out is that these glitches were not obvious. It wasn’t like Skyrim where the game just shit it own pants every now and then…OoT was completely solid to play. You only got the glitches by following a set procedure at the very end of the game…but once you did…it’s like it cracked the whole game wide open.

RIP Phil ❤ 1989-2016 When I finish Ocarina I’m going to try Majora’s Mask I’ll probably need to use a RU-vid more than a few times while playing Majoras mask. There was that "beta quest" code that scrambled the cutscenes and entrances and made the game really bizarre and dreamlike. I got so much extra enjoyment out of screwing around with that after having finished the game. It was like discovering all these bizarre, unfinished, broken leftovers. At that time, I didn't really understand that most of what I was seeing was just glitched, rather than actual unused/hidden content. Though, there was a bit of that too.

Fairly certain that whistle melody you mention early is also the WHISTLE theme from Super mario bros 3 when you warp.
@legendaryadventurespod

Yes, it is. The developers included it in Super Mario 3 and had it carry Mario away in a whirlwind as a reference to the original Legend of Zelda.

omg.. how is it that in the 25 years since this game came out, and despite it being one of my favorite games of all time, I have literally never noticed that the title screen music is based on the warp whistle tune!? I don't know whether to feel stupid, or amazed, or both.
@renakunisaki

It's also the warp whistle in Super Mario Bros 3. It's just unfortunate that playing it in the game doesn't do anything.

I may have issues with Ocarina of Time that developed through the lenses of modern eyes, but that title screen is absolutely a work of art. It encapsulates the ideas of melancholy and innocence perfectly.

One thing I liked was being able to do things out of sequence. Getting the megaton hammer before the fairy bow. Also, beating the spirit temple before the shadow temple. It only took minor creativity to bypass even needing the hover boots.

I got the US version in the UK at launch and managed to complete it before the end of 1998, there were no guides or YT vids back then! For about 6 weeks I lived this game, it just had a unique atmosphere helped by the incredible score and environment design. You look at it now, so many smoke and mirror tricks were used, mainly to hide the inadequacies of the N64 hardware, the frame rate was laughable, but it took me to a world like no other game has. No need for ray tracing/path tracing or spending over £2000 on an RTX graphic card. Great game design transcends hardware requirements. It is still my favourite game to this day and I doubt it will ever be beaten, perfection in every aspect, I have little doubt it will be celebrated for many years to come.
