To preface, I’m someone who is going through a religious detox, but I wouldn’t say I’m moving away from it, as much as reevaluating everything I learned. Feel free to ignore this if you have any religious trauma (trust me I understand). Any way my two cents: as far as my biblical knowledge goes, I think that’s the actual definition. There’s a lot about Christianity that I don’t fully understand, but rn don’t see Jesus as an oppressor. He didn’t fight for people to believe in him; faith (if taught properly) is about choice. People have a tendency of making the thing(s) they worship about themselves or their own glory which is kind of an oxymoron.

There are quite a few "chistians" that claim to love god and follow his teachings, but do their best not to follow what he taught by putting conditions on love and finding excuses to kill. What could be more taking the lords name in vain than being a fake christian?

A fun detail I’ve always enjoyed- the clip around 43:41, where Rick smugly asks if Jerry has anything to contribute to the family- it’s Jerry’s honey they’re all eating, the bottle is labelled as “Jerry’s own”, he’s already contributing to the family but it’s a simple pleasure rather than the most amazing thing in the universe so he’s looked down for it but in that moment he’s the reason they’re all happy at breakfast. It’s such a great moment and surprisingly subtle for the pickle rick show

But WAIT- Don’t you Know? The universe Does have infinite wisdom -But not to defeat you. Exactly the opposite it’s there for you to draw upon ,guided by your intuition, to create the best version of yourself, which creates in turn, in turn, the best version of your life, which involves surrounding yourself with all the best of what the world has to create the best reality - where you were meant to live. because once you’re centered and aligned with your true purpose and know your own truth the universe conspires with you to create a world that feeds your vision of your ideal lifestyle and existence. Everyone who has mastered their destiny is operating on this principle. Joe Rohan, Trump, Dolly Parton, Elon Musk, Walt Disney, Hunter, S Thompson, Hemingway, Thomas Jefferson…. Who actually came up with these very principles as a religion witch is the spiritual practice of being a UNIVERSAL UNITARIAN . It’s why I’m independently, wealthy, a world traveler, why I am able to spend time with the powerful and famous as well as the poor and lost. we all seek the same things, comfort, security, happiness. We all fear the same things Pain, loss, weakness, death. We all have traumas and triumphs , and regrets and fantasies. We are all deeply connected beyond all that divides us . we may have different cultures colors, beliefs, ages, geographic locations, but we all see the moon at night and have mornings and mothers and hearts and minds and when we know ourselves deeply enough, we know our fellow man . Because we all smile in the same language, and are guided by the rhythm of our hearts, which are powered by the universe,It is our power to use. Shift your focus, and suddenly you’ll see beyond all that limits you now. It’s mostly ourselves. Just as it’s ourselves who will be who saves us - We are the hero of our story. And the writer and director. So make it what it’s meant to be …

I think this is wrong too. Dan even says in the video you're meant to want to be like Rick, he says that sometimes you do feel like you're the smartest person in the room. Rick and morty isn't about how Rick is entirely not admirable. It's about how inspite of all those good qualities he cannot appreciate life and how his irony is really weekness. It's easy to see how someone could idolize Rick, especially younger people like me. An interesting thing is that Rick's familiy is much like the fanbase. Idolizing him inspite of his obvious flaws.

46:38 the "You don't got a hug and a kiss in you bitch?" bit has unironically changed my life and improved my relationship with my mother. It started off small, as a relatable laugh, but this has genuinely evolved into something I subconciously hear in my head whenever I'm taking myself too seriously. If I ever get into a petty quabble with her, I just hear CJ, and I immediately laugh, calm down, and manage to ease the age-old tension between her and I with a hug and a simple apology for getting angry. I've watched this video over and over in times of turbulance and spirals, and it always picks me back up. Not to be gross and parasocial about it, but just wanted to make note of a simple line that has *genuinely* changed my life and outlook. Thanks CJ, love your music too! This video changed the way I create and I recommend it to everyone I know and love. It got me through college, thank you times a million, and hope the blessings carry forward.

"prove you can actually execute an idea to its completion instead of telling your friends about how cool its GOING to be" is literally the antithesis of ADHD. Tell me I'm wrong.
@gogauze
@gogauze 2 года назад
Okay. I'll bite. You're wrong. Executive dysfunction is hard to deal with, for sure. And that's really the common root of problems related to ADHD. But, just like you still find a way to show up to appointments that you find important, you can make incremental progress executing on an idea as you find the spoons to act with. A ton of folks with severe ADHD do it every day. Does it take longer? Often, yes. Does it take organization, planning, and extra steps of work to be able to more sporadically dip in and out of the activity? Almost certainly. Does it come at a higher risk that you may come to dislike your idea or think of a better one before you finish it? Yep. And so on with the list of other similar questions... But you're also forgetting that many ADHD folks have access to hyperfixation and hyperfocus. And you can use that to your advantage. Many of them easily think laterally in a way that NT people often can't. And so on with the responses... We class ADHD as a neurodivergence instead of just a mental illness because folks who deal with it aren't just coping with destructive symptoms, but potentially constructive ones as well if they are allowed to apply them.

It's definitely something that a lot of people with ADHD I personally know (including myself) have to unlearn. The excitement that talking about something produces energizes us to create it, so in youth we often develop habits of talking about ideas with people before doing them. The problem is, as you grow older, people start to expect you to deliver on the ideas you discuss. When you lose interest in what you were making (as is also common with executive dysfunction) or simply promise more than you are capable of, and produce subpar results or none at all, they are disappointed, and the rejection sensitivity dysphoria makes that disappointment hit like a truck full of pricks. This becomes a terrible cycle where you believe nothing you create will ever be good, and either never create or hate everything you make, and in both cases hate yourself for it. The solution, in my experience, is to not do the telling your friends part. Keep your projects private until they are close enough that you know you can finish them well. There are better ways to get yourself hyped for a project.

One of the greatest examples of a show being ruined by being forced to reveal canon truths is Twin Peaks. David Lynch and Mark Frost never planned to reveal who killed Laura Palmer. They considered that question to be the entire driving force of the show and a well for infinite mysteries and stories. BUT the executives at ABC insisted that they solve the murder, and the show ratings and quality immediately tanked after. There is still allot of charm and mystery to be had in the back half of season 2, but the bedrock was gone as they were trying to develop a new mystery on which the build the show.
@billhicks8
@billhicks8 2 года назад
I'm not sure I follow the logic. Although the latter half of season two was lacking, it didn't seem to be because the mystery of Laura Palmer was solved; the issues seem more to do with other writers and directors coming in and just not being Lynch and getting the tone and direction wrong. I mean the scenes with Windom Earle are still great, and the ending is incredible, with everything driven with that mix of mystery and purpose. Yet who happens to have taken over again by the end? David Lynch.

I kind of wish you would separate that rant about letting go of your ego and being satisfied with creating shit as long as it means you're creating and upload it as its' own video, because after watching this entire video (again), I restarted it _just_ to listen to that rant several more times because, no matter how many times I tell myself something similar, your way with words resonates with me far more than my own. Also "Don't negotiate with terrorists! Your ego is a terrorist!" is going to become my new life mantra.

"write with the door closed, re-write with the door open." meaning, vomit your art ideas, then make them pretty in post. you can't make vomit look pretty if you haven't vomited yet. idk why i used vomit as a metaphor.
@anzaia2164

Making art is like vomiting in a few ways. It just has to get out. Keeping it in because you're scared what others think when they see it, that will only make you sick. Maybe you don't want to be watched vomiting, I know I don't, but as you said, just do it with the door closed. Im a junior in high school and I watched this video the summer before my softmore year. I used to have a lot of trouble getting started on writing. I would read the prompt over and over again and get stuck trying to find the perfect way to start my essay/paragraph. Watching this video really changed the way I look at creating art. Theres a quote from this video that basically says “youre not afraid to make bad art because you dont want bad art to exist; youre afraid to make bad art because you dont want to be a bad artist. Youre pride is getting in the way of your creativity.” I met a person my softmore year who isn’t a very good writer. Hes the type of guy who tries too hard to sound fancy and ends up saying things that dont make sense. when I worked with him I would have to revise everything he wrote to make it readable. But he inspired me because when it was time to write something he wouldn’t hesitate he would just start writing and that was something I couldnt do. Even though a lot of what he wrote was bad it was better than me writing nothing, and a lot of that writing ended up being really good after I went and heavily revised it. And so from that I learned to just start writing even if I have to start my esssay with “since the dawn of time…” and then go back and changing it later. You dont get better by thinking about doing it you get better by doing it and messing up and learning from it and trying again.

Your take on the themes and narrative of Rick and Morty (and how the whole process is carried out by the creators) made me reconsider both my own thoughts and feelings on a series I, up until now, had considered "fell from grace", and my own views on how to approach criticism of works of fiction, specially the many more nuances serialized and episodic narratives have, good and bad.

42:40 With the new season and everything that was shown I honestly don't think Rick hates Jerry for his monotony and spinelessness. I think he hates him because he's a constant reminder of his powerlessness against himself. That he's trapped in an abusive vacuum that killed his real family and subjugated all other versions of his dead daughter to a life of unfulfilled potential. That he will always be branded as an abuser and deserter to his daughter when he was the exact opposite. And that Jerry is just a means for all the other Ricks to continue to be abusive dirt bags through the exploitation of Morty.

i went through DBT last year and it just wasn't clicking, and recently i found myself re-watching your essays because you've got such a good hold on the philosophy of dialectics. watching your stuff got me to take in these philosophies in a way that wasn't just painstakingly trying to apply them while in an emotionally-charged state (and failing 90% of the time). just a few weeks ago it's like a switch was flipped and DBT just...makes sense now. of course most of that is just me finally feeling ready to take it in, but i think the exposure from your essays helped along the way! this absolutely was not your intention, but the stuff you make will affect people in a lot of weird ways! the beauty of art and all that!
