Anne Applebaum has been monitoring the erosion of democratic systems for decades. Currently, a new threat has emerged: autocracies are collaborating to maintain power. These regimes are not led by a single dictator but are supported by complex networks involving kleptocratic financial systems, security services, and technological experts specialising in surveillance, propaganda, and disinformation. Countries with such centralised autocracies include Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Angola, Myanmar, Cuba, Syria, Zimbabwe, and many others.
She will explain how rogue states endure sanctions, circulate their wealth, and redefine the post-war ‘rules-based order’, and how the democratic world has unintentionally supported this new reality, risking the loss of control over our economic futures and democratic systems.

What a brilliant talk. Younger audiences aren’t familiar with post-WW2 politics + so I appreciate Anne providing historical + geopolitical context to thread together her argument. Great clarification at the end that this argument is more about autocratic movements/ ideas rather than countries. The author is a wonderfully eloquent orator - she even weaved in many new ideas which I did not know of (e.g. Russia’s interest in the Arctic). Though at times, it was frustrating to see this important argument presented through a Western lens, which discounts that democratic governments have enabled + propped up autocracies where it served their needs. It’s crucial to recognise where democracy + autocracy interlope, and the role democratic governments played in facilitating autocracies. In fairness, the author did acknowledge this in the Q&A + I imagine time also limited her argument. I commend the author for recognising + crediting the individuals living under autocracies who helped her write her book. Thank you Anne for an extremely engaging and informative talk. Superb speaker.
