What's the difference between a music therapist, a music teacher, and a musician? Chances are if you're a music therapist, you've been asked this question at least once (if not 100 times!) during your career. The beauty of music is that it is inherently therapeutic, even without intentionally setting goals. However, a music therapist can maximize all the benefits music provides. I’ve been in each of these roles at some point in my life and, in my opinion, the biggest difference between all of them is the PURPOSE and INTENTION behind the use of music.

I’ve always been my friend’s and family’s personal therapist it seems and I love playing music; I can play on various levels violin, clarinet, piano, guitar and harp. I didn’t know I could put the two together until I read a story where a character loved music but didn’t seek fame and his teacher suggested he become a musical therapist. Thank you for explaining it so well.

What story was it? I love reading, and it sounds like a book I'd be interested in! I know myself my teacher recommended music therapy because I was considering either music or nursing. I'm currently applying to a music therapy program, hoping to get in. I've come to realize music is something I want to keep in my day to day life, and I wanted to do nursing to help people, but I find the personal connections and psychological side very interesting. So, I've decided I want to pursue music therapy!

Hey. :) Could you make a video (or just comment, hehe) about what you do on a day-to-day basis as a music therapist?

I actually did make a video about my day-to-day as a music therapist a year or two ago! it's on my channel, though I may make a more updated one this year.

Hello! I’m a high school student that is really considering going into music therapy (possibly at TWU), but I would be lying if I said I’m not scared to major in music, as much as music is my life (specifically classical music - I play piano and oboe). I’m guess I’m worried I won’t be good enough… But anyway, I was wondering if anyone has any tips or anything to give me? About pursuing music therapy/majoring in music? Thanks! :)

How often do you get to play your primary instrument as a music therapist?

honestly you can integrate it as much as you want. There’s a lot of novelty and excitement around you bringing your primary instrument and it can be a huge rapport builder! Especially if it’s not a wind instrument and you can allow them to play if you’re comfortable with that

Is it possible to be a musical therapist without being able to play music? I have a physical disability and no meaningful use of my left arm, and I’m looking at different fields in special education and being a music therapist keeps popping up.

I think right now with music technology becoming so much more popular it's definitely a possibility.
