Transverse engine setups dominate the smaller car market, while longitudinal powertrains can perhaps be seen as the more performance-orientated setup. But how do they compare?

Wind of change fwd cars can be fun too. Look at the type R, GTI, and focus st. I own TL Type S 07 and although its not the fastest car it is fun as hell to drive on curvy backroads. All that straight line speed is cool and all but give me 250-300 hp car that can handle some curves and im happy. Yeah I’ll get beat by any other car from a stop but my driving skills on curves will beat most drivers tbh

@@Elmamaguebo16 Suuuuure, but you can do a lot more fun things with a RWD car than you can an FWD, not that I don't enjoy my Civics and oldschool Golfs. FWD and AWD is only going to become more and more common, the day daily driver is an FWD car and thus is the most common setup. RWD is a dying breed, which makes me sad, as it's always going to be my favourite drivetrain style for having fun, after AWD and FWD, not that those two don't have their own benefits.

So I understand the physical differences between a W12 and V12 (how they're laid out and whatnot), but what advantages does either layout have over the other from a performance standpoint?
@aussiebloke609
@aussiebloke609 7 лет назад
Some W-configured engines are a little different these days. take a regular V12 and stagger the cylinders in each bank just a little. This means you can have the engine slightly shorter, the cylinders can be moved closer together. Think of the V6 from the VW VR6...this engine is laid out in this staggered manner (total difference is only about 15 degrees), making it more like a straight-6 with staggered cylinders and a single head covering the lot. Weld 2 of these engines in a regular V-formation and you also have a W12.

Well, it's less about what engine layout I prefer, and more about the things I like about different cars i've owned that represent transverse and longitudinal engine layouts. I love my longitudinal-engined skyline for the fun of kicking the rear out at the stab of the throttle/drop of the clutch. But I also used to own a transverse-engined Honda prelude that I loved for other reasons- for example it's great handling (far better than the skyline, particularly in the wet, even when the skyline had far better wet-weather tyres).

In the AWD/4WD case: transversely mounted engines, for example, in a Mitsubishi Evo work the same way as in an FWD car, but they have a Viscous transfer case behind the block, or in case of some Audi's, they have the transfer case in the back before the rear differential. Transverse might be more practical but longitudinal engine brings more smiles per horsepower.
@ryans413
@ryans413 4 года назад
Professionally Hunted It dosnt matter what way the engine is mounted the horsepower be the same the main issue be traction FWD gives more traction but RWD gives you better acceleration traction. When a FWD car takes off from a dead stop the front wheels tend to move torque steer were they lose some traction. RWD cars since the car got some weight in the back cause of the differential on acceleration you gain more traction but lose traction once cars traveling if that makes sense.
@prohunter717
@prohunter717 4 года назад
@@ryans413 , you do realise that this is a joke comment I made 3 years ago? Also, if you want to educate others, educate yourself properly since you seem to be having improper knowledge it seems. If you take a moment to read what I have written, perhaps you may come out a more enlightened man. Firstly, FWD cars do not have more traction since the front wheels are doing more than one work at a time. It is accelerating, turning and braking, this means that the front wheels would have to work a lot harder most of the time. FWD cars will also face more noticeable effects of torque steering since the front wheels are both the wheels used to turn and the wheels used to accelerate. RWD still do face torque steering but since the rear wheels are not used for steering, the effects are a lot less noticeable, you can still observe drag cars twisting it's body from all the torque. FWD cars are much more simple, compact, lighter and usually roomier. It is due to less components needed and the lack of a driveshaft going all the through the body. However, they tend to have a more cramped engine bay due to the transverse mounted engine. They tend to be front heavy as a result due to the components being on the front, though the wheels still have to work extra hard and during acceleration, the weight will still be shifted to the back causing even more of a lack of traction. FWD cars can't as a result have too much power since the front wheels won't be able to handle it. RWD cars are a bit more balanced and would have more traction due to how physics works. When you are accelerating, weight will still be pushed more towards the back, aiding in traction to your driven wheels. If you need to turn, you would lower the power so that weight would go more towards the front, aiding in traction being sent towards your turning wheels. RWD cars also tend to be more balanced in their weight, allowing for better stability and handling. Plus both the driven wheels and the turning wheels have their own respective roles and do not have to perform double duty, as such you can take corners much more harshly with them. You do not lose any traction when the car is traveling, you can instead manipulate the amount of traction you have on the back and front by adjusting your throttle. If you follow proper racing lines and shift the weight of the car appropriately, you would be able to take corners at quite a high speed. Lastly, do you even know what a differential is? I did made it clear at this point that the rear wheels get traction during acceleration due to weight and the forces of physics being at play, while the front wheels get traction during deceleration or braking for a similar case. A differential is a mechanism that allows both the wheels to spin at a different rate but may lock them in place if a certain difference in speed is detected. When turning, wheels have a different turning arc and speed, welded/locked diff wheels would rub during a turn, causing less traction, damaging the certain components which may lead to catastrophic failure and also cause a lot more wear to the wheels. This is due to the different paths the inner and the outer wheels take. Differentials allow the wheels to move freely from each other and prevent the previously mentioned issues. There are a fair bit amount of differential systems and settings, each suited for the car and the role they are required for. Let's not forget other things at play here. The weight of the car, the balance distribution of the car, the power of the car, the suspension system and setup, what the car is tuned for,etc. For example, some independent suspension systems tends to change camber at different height or load. Every car is different in how they are made and how they perform. A car is a lot more complex than what I have written but I hope you now have a basic understanding of how things work. If you're gonna try to educate or correct someone, please take a moment to research things yourself.
@ryans413
@ryans413 4 года назад
Professionally Hunted lol you wrote all that for no reason it’s pretty much what I already said you just through in some extra stuff look I know all this my point was that FWD cars have more traction going down the road because all the weight the heaviest part of the car is the engine and most that weight is being supported by the front wheels. RWD cars have better traction accelerating cause the back end dips down and the drive wheels are in the back giving more traction on take off that’s why sport cars are all RWD cars. FWD cars can take corners better cause when turning since the turning wheels are also the drive wheels the weight transfer into the turn pushing the car the way you are turning. RWD losses traction in turns cause the driving wheels are not the turning wheels and it wants to keep pushing the car straight forward causing under steer. There’s a reason why almost every car that’s not a truck or a AWD car is FWD because traction’s better other then on hard acceleration where the car dips back and you lose some traction with FWD.
@prohunter717
@prohunter717 4 года назад
@@ryans413 , I see that you have neither read nor learned what I have typed in since you are still having some misconceptions about some rather simple things. FWD cars don't have more traction going down the road since the weight is towards the back during acceleration. They also have less traction going into a turn since having the driven wheel be the turning wheel means the wheel has to face the effects of both radial and lateral forces. Most cars are FWD because they are cheaper and allow you to have a more roomy interior inside due to the lack of a long driveshaft. Also, having too much weight on the front, can cause an in-balanced weight distribution. Most RWD front-engine cars anyways have a 40/60 F/R distribution which is considered ideal so I have no idea what you are on about. RWD can take corners better if you actually take the time to learn how to use proper lines and throttle or braking inputs They can accelerate and turn more harshly since each respective wheel is subjected to lesser forces than a FWD car would be. RWD cars can also lower throttle like I had previously mentioned, to shift weight to the front, to aid in turning. RWD will lose traction in a corner if you do not know how to drive a car, are too jerky on the steering or smash either the throttle or the brakes. RWD cars can also have the heaviest part of the car, the engine, in the front as well, it's nothing special to FWD cars. AWD cars in it's own allows much more traction overall. Anyways, I won't bother continuing the discussion with you since it is clear you have no read anything from me before. Plus I feel myself get dumber the more I talk with you since you don't seem to understand how the many forces effects a car. Specially if you think having the driven wheel also being the turning wheel means better traction, while it's actually the opposite.
@ryans413
@ryans413 4 года назад
Professionally Hunted Dude do you own a RWD car or something and you just gotta justify it or something do the research I said from accelerating FROM A DEAD STOP NOT DRIVING NORMALLY. RWD cars have better traction when accelerating but FWD cars have better traction WHEN DRIVING NORMALLY DOWN THE ROAD but lose traction WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A DEAD STOP. Also THEY HAVE BETTER TRACTION IN CORNING it’s a proven fact I’m done with you go drive your RWD car in rain or snow then come tell me how shit the traction was

For point A to B it really doesn't matter. For cars with power I thought I preferred RWD having owed 3 AE86 until I drove a Integra Type R with H&R coilovers and Bilstein shocks with from Brembos. This gave literal meaning to the term " handles like it's on rails". it was also 550 WHP B18C. Ultimately however a 4WD is what I prefer for laying down power and safety.

Sometimes a front engine awd car might understeer more than a fwd car because the rear tyres push the front ones across the ground and the front tyres are also driven, so they loose even more grip.

After just replacing an alternator on a 99 cougar (infamous for lack of foresight on engineering) I can safely say I'm all about the longitudinal engine setup, like the one in my 01 540i, shit's just easier to work on and more fun to drive. That said, I've never had a proper run in a hot hatch that has some torque.

Having owned a bit of everything. From a 91 eldorado, to a 300zx 2+0, to a e36 318, to a mini Cooper s, and a awd Mazda 3 hatch.... Rwd cars are the most fun hands down. Don't get me wrong tho if you're gonna go fwd. Them minis haul ass, and handle almost like a rwd. I was entering an off ramp and the tail just kicked out doin a slip angle thing. Different things can be done but end of the day. The amount of control you get from a rwd is unbeatable.

@stayboosted1966

I prefer transverse because it puts weight on the steering bit of the car which is the most important therefore having nothing but the rear body and fuel tank weighing the rear end down leaving you with a mix of good handling and perfect tailwhips in a good geometry car like the 2017 Vw GTI Sport 2.0T

Fwd is wrong wheel drive...
@ShadowFalcon
@ShadowFalcon 7 лет назад
Anton Markov depends on the application. For example in a race series where horsepower is limited, and grip is low (WRC R1 Junior to R3) FWD is preferable to RWD, because it offers less drivetrain losses, and more controllability in low-traction situations.
@antonmarkov2893
@antonmarkov2893 7 лет назад
ShadowFalcon And it offers less fun.
@ShadowFalcon
@ShadowFalcon 7 лет назад
Anton Markov not really. You just have to stop being a girls blouse, and drive it like a proper hooligan. Scandinavian flick, lift-off oversteer, you've probably heard of them. Case in point, in twisty conditions, most would think the FWD Peugeot 205 GTi is more fun than the RWD Mazda MX5. Yes, a hothatch is faster and more fun than the "Miata".
@antonmarkov2893
@antonmarkov2893 7 лет назад
ShadowFalcon i know fwd can be mighty fast, but when you are not racing who cares if you are fast.
@alexandermoore2982
@alexandermoore2982 7 лет назад
Exactly. And I'd say three-wheeling it out of some tight corners is much more fun than sliding the rear end into a tree. FWD has done wonders for "fun" cars as it's very manageable and easier to drive a car to the limits. It's much more fun to drive a Pug 205 GTi at 9/10ths than a Miata at 2/10ths.

Gonna be starting to build a drift cart powered by a GM 3100 SFI v6. Now the engine came out of a 1998 Chevy Lumina which is a transversal set up. Is there any way (even if I have to fab up mounting plates) to take a truck transmission and mount it up without messing with the engine or transmission too much? I've researched for a few weeks now and can't find a tranny that looks like it would work, but I don't know a lot about transmissions.

I owned a 2007 nissna Maxima 6-cylinder (transverse engine) and it was a pain to replace the spark plugs. Three of them were behind the intake manifold so I had to learn how to remove all those cables and wires and of course the giant hunk of metal tucked away in the back of the engine bay My current car is an I4 longitudinal. Much better to work on
