The play, "The Dining Room" was on PBS' Great Performances. It featured Edge of Night's Jeanne Ruskin (Laurie) in several roles. It also stars: Frances Sternhagen, John Shea, William H. Macy, Pippa Pearthree, Remak Ramsey.
The play is a comedy of manners, set in a single dining room where 18 scenes from different households overlap and intertwine. Presumably, each story is focused around a different family during different time periods who has in their possession the same dining room furniture set, manufactured in 1898. The stories are about White Anglo-Saxon Protestant (WASP) families. Some scenes are about the furniture itself and the emotional attachment to it, while other scenes simply flesh out the culture of the WASPs. Overall, it tells the story of the dying and relatively short-lived culture of upper-middle class Americans, and the transition into a much more efficient society with less emphasis on tradition and more emphasis on progress. Some characters are made fun of, as is the culture itself, but there is also a genuine longing for the sense of stability, comfort and togetherness that the culture provides.

I played the mother in the Standish scene and a birthday party kid in... the birthday party scene in my show! Closing night was yesterday and I was interested to see how our portrayal matches up to this one. Very entertaining!

This is SO good… The writing is amazing, double entendres, tension in the subtext, so many great writing techniques to learn from. Thanks so much for posting this.

Opening night tonight. With two weeks to learn ten characters has been an extreme challenge.

Did this in my first acting class. Did the Michael/Aggie scene. Also, notice William H. Macy the great in here, as well as John Shea?

Ermagherd! Opening dialogue from WH Macy sounds exactly like what Frank from Shameless would say. This is poetic.

"and before you know it, your grandson will be back at the plow." Really powerful, and so true. Reminds me of the saying "Father merchant, son gentleman, grandson beggar."
