A 5 day river trip down the Dirty Devil River in southern Utah, March 2020. Not a bad way to hide out from Covid-19. We floated (and dragged) 41 miles from Lower Sand Slide to the confluence with Poison Springs Canyon.
This trip was a magical one, a real adventure. Hardly anyone floats this river, and we saw why. It is only floatable for a few weeks out of the year, right as the snow melts out of the Henry Mountains and San Rafael Swell. This occurs in early spring, when Mother Nature hasn't quite decided that winter is over, and cold temperatures and snow aren't uncommon. The water from the river is so uniquely dirty and alkaline that it is undrinkable even when filtered, and so we had to fill up jugs of water at a few springs up side canyons. That being said, most of the trip was spent floating lazily down a river, gazing up at sublime desert canyons. Feel free to reach out with questions if you are thinking about doing a similar trip yourself, information on this area is limited. Hopefully it stays that way.
