The Disappointment of Releasing a Game

There's something more to this

In this video I take a look at Braid, an indie game released in 2008 for Xbox live arcade. The game is seen as one of the most influential independently made games ever and is consistently credited with being one of the catalysts for the explosion of indie games in the last 15 years. The game's creator Jonathan Blow has also risen to notoriety for its innovative and influential approaches to game design and the game industry in general. Jonathan had high ambitions and expectations from Braid and although the game reached commercial and critical success, to him it was in some ways a disappointment. This reaction and experiece is captured in the 2012 film, Indie Game: The Movie which follows the development process behind three games, Braid, Super Meat Boy and Fez. This is a movie that has had a great influence on me and I wanted to discuss some of the sections with Jonathan in a formal video.

Ok, this video came in such a time in my life, that I'm almost scared of it being just wizardry. You see, I'm an visual artist and I'm making a webcomic called DRIVEN. It's totally free to read(I live in Brazil, there is not much of a stablished market for making a living as a comics artist), because it's a story I cary with me for already ten years and my life goal is just to share it with the world so everyone can at least lear why I think my creation is special. The thing is, I released chapter 6 just 2 days before the release of the video, and I kind of sad that it got almost no attention at all. I've never worked so hard on a single chapter, or at any other thing at all in my life(over 40 pages). And I try to hold my emotions to the few comments I got from it as they were all positive, but I feel that none of those tried to dig any deeper to see what I was trying to develop there, and that got me way harder that I would like to admit. Still, DRIVEN is quite successful overall(even though it never gave me any monetary return), but I still feel that it is far from accomplishing what I really wanted, and that is exactly that connection with my audience. I'm sorry for just writing all this down, but, as an artist, this video just hit the right notes at the right moment for me, and I felt I needed to get these thoughts out of my head.

I'm really glad to hear that. It's nice that it meant so much to you and I really hope you're able to keep making DRIVEN or any other projects in the future. I'll try and check out some of your work some time. Thank you for the comment and I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

Great video. I definitely relate… i think when making art we’re really hoping for people who will dig deep and piece together all the little secrets we wove in. “Cool song” or “interesting game” really feels like a let-down by comparison. (I also think this stems from the way artists relate to art they really admire)

Yeah I really agree with that, especially your last part. It's such an aspiration to be thought of or understood in the way you understand or think about someone's work. Thank you for your comment, I'm glad you liked the video.

I've released a few games in itch that I felt were unique that very few people appreciate. It's often called confusing, but for the few that enjoy, I think they do enjoy it. I think it can be disappointing but it's often satisfying when someone understands what you were going for and says something nice. In many ways Jon Blow inspires me to keep on developing unique ideas and try new things

I felt I really connected with Super Meat Boy's authors, throughout the whole game, but especially during Hell's boss, when we have to defeat the conglomerate of all of our past failures. I felt that was very relatable, we have our personal hell inside of us, where we have to pacify our own self-condemnation over many errors that don't really matter anymore. I still think it's an underrated game, it pushes you to improve at every step, no other game does that so intentionally.

I really loved that as well. Already such a great game but with the added things like that it made it so cool. Thank you for your comment.

Wait 15 comments on this vid, I really enjoyed how you view games, I really enjoy games that has community generated content, but I don't consider minecraft one of them, Best game that adapted this feature is little big planet aka LBP, it was my childhood, sad its been cancelled years ago, but at least similar game gonna release on steam called restitched, I think u should give opinion on LBP and restitched I swear I would love to hear it.
