A non-broadcast documentary (made just for fun) filmed during a 2010 expedition led by Stewart McPherson in search of new species of carnivorous pitcher plants (Nepenthes).
In this 23 minute film, Stewart McPherson travels to the island of Palawan in the Philippines, to climb a previously unexplored mountain. Along the journey, in uncharted territory, Stewart finds evidence of a little known tribe, a newly discovered carnivorous sundew (Drosera ultramafica) and a brand new species of carnivorous pitcher plant (which he later named Nepenthes leonardoi).
A full account of the discovery of Nepenthes leonardoi and many other spectacular new Nepenthes species is provided in the recently published book title New Nepenthes Volume 1 (available from Redfern Natural History).
Filmed by Greg Bourke.

This guy is great, a true adventurer not afraid to tackle difficult conditions with minimum carbon footprint. Amazing how resilient he is wearing simple clothes in difficult terrain.

Such a good informative video. Its so good because you’re not just talking about plants, it’s about everything. You shed light on the terrain you’re on and Alot more. It’s a well rounded video. Just imagine if you had a real documentary with high tech cameras! I mean well done.

I'm from Philippines and from that place I have never tried to go to unexplored area because my grandparents forbids me and many places with pitchers have tribal conflicts and arm conflicts (I'm surprised by that crab too) 😳😱☺️

absolutely fantastic.. ive been to brookspoint which is about 50 miles from where u are in the video.. the palawan mountain tribal people would bring there produce they would grow down to a market near brooks point.. there were resturant owners from Manila present to purchase their goods.. 3 hour bus ride to puerto princesa. then an hour and 1/2 flight return to Manila

This is an amazing RU-vid channel! Keep exploring and learning! Love learning about botany and environments and places I know little to nothing about. Discovering and sharing knowledge and saving habitat of plants and animals is very important. Way more Important than the new iPhone or gaming system. Without the science behind why plants and animals evolve the way they do we wouldn’t know how important micro climates and untouched areas are to the health of the planet. Diversity is key. We dump money into bullshit when we should be spending money on exploration and learning.

My Aunt use to grow pitcher plants in their back yard in the province of Laguna, back then, I never knew it's true value, so like any playful kid would do, i placed all sorts of things inside the pitchers 😂 This video made me wanna visit Palawan. Who knew there are sundews on this Island. I never even knew that sundews can grow in the wild here in the Philippines.

Trick to stop blood from bleeding is found at the pet store. They use It for parrots etc because if they bleed they don’t have coagulants and bleed out so they make a powder for that. Try it next jungle expedition for leeches. I remember having it with my step dads parrot and it is supposed to help blood clot in wounds

matanuska high I- lmao what do you mean, they digest phosphorus and nitrogen😂 in insects, lmao they can’t digest flesh, if you feed them meat (like a flytrap or sundew) the leaf dies off because they can’t break it down.. I- sis you really thought you snapped huh
@emilianoromero-cano2605
@emilianoromero-cano2605 4 года назад
matanuska high also the structure of nitrogen and phosphorous are easy for the plants to break down because that’s what literally every plant uses to grow, they can’t break down the proteins in meat because they’ve never done it, it’s like using a wrong key to open a lock, it’s just not gonna happen, stfu
