The Discus Fish Tank weekly update, whats this weeks disaster. Nerve damage, algae and cleaning!

Its not that bad but as always its eventful with discus fish. Will try and do this every week as theres always something thats needs some attention. These fish are quite easy to keep but theres a few things you need to keep on top of.
I thought a weekly update would cover most of it and if theres anything specific you would like to see or know more about just drop a comment and of course subscribe.

Hopefully the damage is only to his colour. I'd hate to lose this one.

That algae on the sand looks like cyano which is usually caused by lack of flow. If you get a couple of small powerheads (one at each end) and point them across the sand they'll get rid of the algae and keep the sand clean. Hope the Cobalt makes a quick and full recovery. Call him 'Harvey' as in Harvey Two Face lol

Funny you should mention that. I think the new sand sparks the cyano as its got higher levels of silicates. Its decreasing but I have a pump that blasts the debris out of the corner. i need to expand my clean up fish also too. That might help. Update on Harvey - He has patches that seem to be returning to the normal blue.

@@discus.switch Glad he's doing better. The white 'pimple' on the other fish is likely bacterial usually from high bioload. It'd be worth upping the water changes to stop that getting worse :)

@@chickenfist1554 yeah that happens occasionally. I'm thinking about a large water change tank so I can do more than 100l in one go. Still undecided as to whether the uv actually does anything.

Nothing is wrong with that male.....that is his breeding dress. My electric blue Acara and the Electric blue Texas does the same thing.

Your going to have possibly even more fighting, if your going to end up with 4pairs, they all look great in the display tank, but you don’t want bullying, leading to all sorts of problems, especially in their health. are you considering putting the ones that are pairing up in their own breeder tanks any time soon 🤷‍♂️

Im trying one pair ina breeding tank. My theory is if you raise the GH in a tank they seem less interested in breeding and the aggression is decreases. They also grow better with a higher GH.

What is GH?

GH is General Hardness so indicates if youve got soft or hard water. More specifically it's a measure of calcium and magnesium ions in the water. Discus prefer softer water, and for breeding a low gh and tds is required. But I've also read that a higher GH and the mineral rich water that comes with that is good for growth.
