I feel honestly I've been playing for a long time but have been on and off. I recently dropped it back in 2020 but picked up again about a year ago. Also started a RU-vid channel with a buddy! I don't really care about hardcore meta despite following it and I'll keep up with playing because you never really forget ya know? Especially when you've played since childhood. I just figured if yugioh is a broke mess, so just let it be, there's no getting better it's just adapting to what's there.

@@kevinlee5753 I like competitive play, I do enjoy back and forth duels obviously because it feels more accomplishing if that makes sense. But I do have fun beating people in just a couple turns. I've gotten to the point that if I get bored or annoyed at competitive play I just take a break from it. 🙋 I'm the literal definition of a Yugi Boomer but instead of complaining about how competitive duels are and instead of complaining about new mechanics and card types I just learned how to use them. 😂 I remember my little cousin telling me "have you seen Pendulum monsters?" A lot of the issues do fall on Konami, it's their game and they are responsible for keeping it 1. Fun to play 2. Easy to play 3. Accessable to play . Knowing that you are going to see the same deck over and over at a locals, regionals, ycs, ect is not fun. The fact that the ban list does not address the issues because Konami wants to sell the current hot deck is infuriating. The game has way too much going on for new players to pickup and learn, unless they want to dedicate themselves to learning the game. I can count the number of kids under 20 that I have seen playing the game on one hand since I came back in 2019. I am in a very competitive locals scene and even though they aren't mean to new players it's a very intimidating area. If you aren't playing meta well then good luck. And Konamis practices for TCG printing of cards is down right disgusting. Bonfire being a super in ocg, seeing that snake eyes is the big thing and making it a secret in the TCG is borderline predatory. Knowing that there are a lot of staples, but neglecting reprints at lower rarity or making them easier to obtain without paying inflated prices. Players have all the reasons to be disenfranchised at this point. The fact that they still play and pay for the game says a lot, the game is flawed, they want Konami to do better and hope they will, but Konami keeps failing them. Players while upset with the game, get to enjoy a little bit of time with friends, myself I get maybe 1 day a week to get out for a bit and when I get to spend that little bit of time with friends. That's what matters more than anything.
America is a capitalist country. The supply and demand is something that is taken advantage of in every business. Could they morally be better and make cards “cheaper”? Sure. But konami doesnt set the prices for these cards. We do. We are the ones selling and buying cards for $100+ at playsets. Cant blame konami for that
@@xboy1dax the issue is when a card is printed in super rare, a more common rarity, in the ocg (bonfire), then when they see how it proforms over there, they change it to a secret rare to force the sale of booster boxes to be inflated to get a playset, they definitely have a massive hand in the pricing market. Or creating a deck that needs a card that hasn't been reprinted in over 10 years (trident dragon), put out a video pointing out that it is needed, they are controlling the market. They know what they are doing and they do it without a second thought. Yes america is a capitalist country, but this is also a global game, and a game that is pricing out it's players.
I understand the fact that metas can and will exist in every game, but its generally what keeps me from playing consistently. I don't play decks I don't like, and the decks I like essentially never line up with the meta, so I have to choose between playing a deck I like and losing every game or playing a deck I have no interest in just for a chance at some wins. Its the primary reason I only play casually with friends.
And that's the best way to play it for people who doesn't want to compete in tournaments. Made-up ban lists and rules, casual decks, and most importantly, having fun with people you love, for me, is the real way of playing the game.
Nah just play what you like. Rogue decks still beat top meta decks at points, especially super rogue decks that meta sheep may have never seen a day of their lives like T.A., sunavalon, aromages, evil eyes, or so many others. I play purrely and have been absolutely BODIED by evil eye because I literally didn't know what or where to use my handtraps and monster disruptions.
I stopped playing Yu-Gi-Oh in the XYZ era. When i no longer was able to "play" and instead was constantly getting negated and watchig my opponent go on 5 minute long combos i decided enough was enough. Playground / school yard Yu-Gi-Oh was when you got to live the fantasy of being in the Yu-Gi-Oh universe. Just roll up to duel random people in your area and neither of you had any concept of a meta or even the actual rules of the game. This was the original and GX era for me. Then i got older (high achool) and me and my friends would build decks and try to improve to beat each other. Eventually lead to playing on dueling network. However i eventually played enough people that the only way to stay competitive was the meta and knowing the rules and deck combos inside out. Eventually it was no longer about buying a booster pack a month and hoping to randomly get something good to augment your deck. Instead it was about targeting specific cards. It was longer build a fun deck from your bulk of cards. Instead now it was about playing the meta fully or else you just cant play against anyone else that was using meta decks. Now you entered a death spiral of sunken cost fallacy and dont want to quit because of how much you enjoyed it in the past. Forever seeking that same old spark and feeling but having lost what the game really meant to you and why it was fun to begin with.
Summoning Luster Dragon turn 1 was super good. Watch your opponent in fear when they only had a 1700ATK Monster ^^ I think YuGiOh needs to go back to Vanilla to be a better game again. It's about fighting against each other fairly with monsters and spells, it's not about creating weird Combos that kill your opponent instantly. The Pharaoh would be ashamed of these unhonorful rules :3
I wish that everything didn’t have a “floating” effect. Oh you destroyed my monster, well I can draw 3 cards, and one of those 3 cards allows me to resummon a stronger monster from YOUR deck. Also the spell card I used a turn ago wipes out all your monsters. Oh and this trap that I used 2 turns ago lowers your credit score
Yeah, thats the only thing I deslike about YGO. Its too brutal. Everythjng chains into everything and performs some absolutely(multiple) destructive effect, on top of having high attack. Even some of the weakest monsters can cause absolute mayhem for your opponent. I love the speed, and I love the combos, but the overwhelming power of effects can be absurd.
Honestly. Meta decks not having a fail state is an insane decision imo. It needs to be possible to get blown out and just lose instead of plussing and playing through, even on the opponent’s turn.
konami has zero interest in fixing this game. they have no interest in making and keep the game fun and engaging. they are more interested in power creeping everything to push new cards for money. i refuse to believe other wise until other formats like goat and trinity are made available in master duel. or until they make the trap card "summon limit" an official game rule. combos decks.... i mean solitaire decks is where i draw the line.
@@ahmadazem4167 re-read my statement carefully. i want goat and trinity to be made an alternative format in master duel. "or" (i did say "or") i want "summon limit" to be an official game rule. it reads "Neither player can Summon more than two times per turn." meaning i want to knee-cap playing solitaire with yugioh cards. better known as combo decks. why? because i don't think it fair or engaging to watch my opponent play solitaire with their entire deck for 30 minutes. only to set up a board that essentially says "lol, i wasted your time AND you can't play the game due to an absurd amount of negates. might as well surrender since you didn't get to go first." i want it to be made in a way that both players actually get to play the game. this is most direct effective way to deal with it. "You can just convince friends or the card shop to make play it" nope. not going to happen because i'm the only one in my friend groups that is willing to give this game a chance at all. and i'm not giving konami money for a broken game they refuse to fix, so card shops and buying cards is out of the question. won't even entertain the idea.
Take note folks: 1. Konami doesn’t actually care about game balancing, you and they may think they do but they don’t. 2. The best cards are gonna cost you a lot of money, so don’t bother if you don’t have much. 3. The banlist will never solve everything, because they’ll just make something worse. 4. Play yugioh as a nostalgic experience rather than a fun game. 5. Finally, as long as you’re playing the game and buying cards, Konami will thank you for your money. That’s all folks…
All things owned by corporations go through this process known as "Enshittification" because they only care about Profit for that quarter. If profit is up that quarter then product is good. They literally CANNOT see the damage they are causing to the brand.
As a yugiboomer who fell off the wagon early, getting back into it is like transitioning from Team Fortress 2 to Fortnite. Watching someone combo for 10 minutes straight before you've even drawn feels like watching a zoomer sh*t out a log cabin the instant you ping them.
Yeah I left in the mid 2000s, and then 10 or so years later randomly decided to check yugioh out again. Was thoroughly confused, it didn't even feel like it was the same game.
@@det06f006 They are a business. Not the nicest one but they make money like any business and they do it the smartest they can. If you were in their position you’d do the same. I watched it as a kid when it was just Yugioh, and we played in the park and we all had normal monsters and a few effect monsters.
no its not the players this time around. Its Konami and their incompetence. I don't remember anytime in the past where we went from nearly Tier 0 Sprights >>> Tier 0 Tearlaments+Ishizu >>> Tier 0 Kashtira >>> Tier 0 Snake Eyes. Never have i seen so many tier 0 formats back to back. It is just not healthy for the game in general and player fatigue is definitely starting to take its toll on the playerbase. Konami CAN fix this, but they aren't going to because its not profitable to them. And Paul, what do you say to the people such as myself who had already quit the physical card games? At this rate, it feels like the game is dying a slow death when it REALLY shouldn't be.
Kashtira was strong but it wasn't Tier 0... There were plenty of good competitors last format. See: Floowandereeze, Branded Despia, Labrynth etc. I get your point that it's not healthy for the game but if you watched the video you can see that Paul spoke about playing OLDER formats. Play GOAT/Edison/Trinity/HAT. Also the game isn't dying. The YCS player numbers have only been going up and Konami know this. One of the latest broke player numbers entirely with the 150th YCS being the one that broke it before that.
@@subpanda101 kashtira wasn't tier 0 from a numbers perspective but every deck in the format was equipped to specifically deal with kash and how good a deck was had to do with how well they could deal with it which is just what a tier 0 format is
Tearlaments literally made me quit the game lmao, I was already on my way out but once Konami released a T0 deck that makes plays on Turn 0? Making plays on my turn when I won the dice roll? I'm out bro.
I don't like playing antimatter either I just like playing cool fun. Osteen decks of my own original creation. And it's only because in my years experience that I can still win quite a few PVP games even reaching into Platinum rank. I just want the incentive of winning everything to go away. If I didn't have to win in order to get some of the walls or gems. I wouldn't mind losing almost most my games cuz then I can still play the deck I enjoy. I miss playing my D.D. deck Different dimension. DD warrior DD warrior lady did the assassins. I've recreated that deck probably 50 times now. And the strongest variance I can make them my favorite cards don't even feel like it's a different dimension deck anymore.
The problems are •Hand traps •Imbalance of good/bad decks •Generic extra deck cards being used in every deck resulting in no originality •Game is too fast pased • Komami makes broken decks just to ban them months later and people drop hundreds on said deck just to be worthless after a ban list
Been like that since forever I only started playing for real back in 2013 but noticed that Mustly on MD nowdays or Dueling Book for expermentacion... Do like me 😂 Heck get collector items like Legendary decks 1 and 2 just for the sake of it, but never bother it Physical again (Not many locals or people playing it anyway)
Generic extra deck cards have always been a thing and they don't ruin originality at all. The fast pace of the game is the biggest appeal to me. If I wanted a slow and sluggishly boring game I'd go and play magic. Handtraps are also very necessary, in fxt I'd argue regular trap cards are more problematic especially after siding when you know you're going first so you can side into floodgates
the most important problem is that the game is too fast (unbreakable board on turn 1 should not be a thing), imbalance and generic boss monsters for me are secondary, and handtraps are a necessary evil for modern game (so more than "they should ban all handraps" i think "they should make handtraps not necessary anymore") what i want is that the game would not to be "prevent your opponent from playing anything", negates can be fun if the're done right, even Pokemon (videogame, not tcg) has negates but it's still fun

Yeah, I more or less just quit Yu-gi-oh altogether. I come back every once in a while. Played a match on Master Duel recently where the other guy's combo went on and on, summoning several monsters, then tributing them to summon another monster and then a link and I was just done, and this was turn 2. I quit before their turn finished. Reminded me why I left.
Average experience with the current game, dont know how anyone enjoys this. Its very sad because for most they grew up with the game and its hard to let it go
I am a disenfranchised Yu-Gi-Oh player. I started playing competitively in February 2018, which was right after SPYRAL got hit. I ended up playing SPYRAL my favorite deck for years and some other decks from time to time. I eventually ended up winning a regional in Layton, Utah in February 2020 with SPYRAL after Magician's Souls came out. I quit playing after Crossout Designator came out. I was playing pure Sky Striker at the time. I was doing really well against all the meta decks. I was playing in an OTS tourney against a new player who just spent a ton of money on an Invoked Shaddoll Dogmatika deck. I was going to win when I chained Twin Twister to his Shaddoll Schism. He then chained Crossout Designator, banishing his Twin Twister from deck. It was at that moment when I realized that I didn't like this game anymore, and that I hadn't for a long time. The amount of broken cards/decks in the game over the years has been so frustrating that I'm just done. I don't really understand why people continue to complain about the game, but keep playing. Konami will never change.
My biggest gripe is that I can't even build fun decks because there is always a card or two with 1 print. I was going down a list of potential decks I could make, like S-Force, Melodious, and Amazoness, but those archetypes lack reprints. I want to make decks from newer sets too, like Earthbounds and Flame Swordsman, but again, there are expensive cards that prevents Konami from taking more money from my wallet, and the wallets and purses of others. TCG Konami should be making zero changes from the OCG deck build packs, as well as, printing cards about 6 months after their first prints, so people can actually build physical copies of their Master Duel decks.
You can’t build those “fun decks” and take them to a local to have fun because everyone is so obsessed with going to locals and test out their competitive deck that it’s nearly impossible for you to test any deck you just want to play for casual play and have fun. Casual Yugioh is basically dead now and it’s kind of sad
@@JuwanBuchanan Yugioh is either super competitive to win cash or complete jank kitchentop with people making up the rules. Game is too money hungry at the moment to even consider playing
I'm happy I have a career to afford the game. I'm working on building about a dozen decks, from rogue to tier 1, to loan to people at my locals if they don't have anything remotely competitive to play with. I also donated my entire bulk (around 3+ booster boxes of each set since Battle of Chaos) for people at my locals to take from. I figured this can only help grow the Yugioh community near me
This is one of the most wholesome things I've read. I'm glad you're trying to fosrer community spirit & learning with the game. As Paul has mentioned in other videos, there are many ways to enjoy YuGiOh. Doing the mental work to find your niche in the game is the hard part that each person needs to do, and if that results in them deciding not to continue then so be it, the reflection on themselves alone will be a valuable experience.
Longtime MTG player here, who has kept myself distant from the franchise for the last few years, but is now returning. Because of that, I feel like I can provide some insight into the mentality of game burnout. You see, the thing is, this whole idea of a card game living through multiple generations of players is a new thing. Some people get filtered out, and some return. But at the end of the day, these are games made by mega conglomerate corporations, who only care about quarterly profits. So even though that truth sucks, embracing the fact is its own liberation from being so worried about a game’s direction. Don’t like it? Don’t play it, but sincerely, not dismissively. Sometimes people need to prioritize different things in life, and sometimes, returning back to what you used to love can reignite that passion. That’s how I feel now with MTG. I kinda gave up in 2019, but kept myself on top of the culture. I decided I wasn’t going to buy into the hype of each set, and instead just buy what looked cool to me. I liked the Warhammer decks, the Fallout decks, and honestly their Standard sets since Kamigawa Neon Dynasty have been bangers. The game itself is going in a direction I didn’t expect, especially with Secret Lairs, but at large those things just simply don’t matter. There’s cool stuff I see, I want to buy it. I don’t have the time or patience to worry about how negative things are happening. I just wanna collect and play with my stuff.
As for the power creep, as much as many people (including myself) think that it has gotten out of control, I do think we are at a point of no return when it comes to that. Yugioh has been around for so long and has evolved to the point where it is expected now to special summon 10+ times in one turn, have more interactions on your opponent's turn than on your own actual turn, and have duels rarely lasting three turns. Honestly, the best solution to this would be to have something like MTG's Commander's format, in fact, Yugioh already has that with Edison and GOAT format. Konami just needs to acknowledge and promote it more.
Yugioh has a type of commander format called Deck Master format. It's similar to the virtual world arc of the DM anime, and like MTG commander, where players have one deck master. It can be ANY monster card but that's your deck master. You can bring it out at any time for NO cost/tribute, but if it leaves the field you automatically lose regardless of lifepoints. Also, like commander, deck master format has a strict 1 copy limit, meaning you can only play each card in your deck at 1 copy. The rest of the rules are just standard yugioh. It's intended to be casual just like commander format and to make use of cards you'd otherwise never use because you need at least 40 different cards in your deck not including your deck master.
Problem with Edison and GOAT are they're time based formats. There are a ton of really cool modern rogue decka that would be fun to play but not really doable in modern ygo and straight up not doable in edison and goat. Like I really wanna play a straight up weevil underwood insect barrier deck but it'd be really rough doing it without Metamorphosed Insect Queen and cocoon of ultra evolution, to name a few
I get what you're saying, and I decided to quit again myself. Now I quit because I trying to take my animation more seriously and masterduel was consuming all my free time, but being unhappy with how the game is currently and the updates of what's to come to masterduel did not make me happy. Last yugioh upload got like 5 views, I was like what am I gaining from this game besides stress... nothing. So I quit... sometimes you just gotta know your limits.
I like having archetypes with unique mechanics but I don't like when my opponent can throw away their entire deck, recycle the entire deck back and end on a full board with 10 negates and a full backrow. Then they proceed to play during my turn.
The #1 thing is the F'ing stupid printings/cost of the game. Cards don't get reprinted quick enough and it's difficult to try and keep up at locals. I only play MD and with ONE friend IRL. Konami is pathetic.
I've spent thousands irl in TCG. ZERO on Master Duel. I have like a half dozen decks in TCG but over 30 full decks on MD. Duplicates aside, something doesn't add up.
In my personal opinion, the only aspect of Yu-Gi-Oh that I find enjoyable is the anime series. While I acknowledge that many individuals, including RU-vidrs, engage in the card game, I personally find it to be excessively fast-paced, overly complex, and financially demanding. I love watching you guys.

i just don't think that yugioh was built on a strong foundation. it doesn't strike me as a game that was designed to be future proof. at this point, it's kind of like a writhing mass of cancerous growth that can no longer be tamed. the game simply was not designed with longevity in mind imo. and of course it hasn't exactly been managed well either
The price of the game is the only thing that makes it unbearable to me imo. I'd be fine with the turn 1wombo combos and interactions if I didn't have to down 400+ dollars to watch it happen. The high variance and weird ass losses you can get in this game are funny when they're not tied to insane financial investments.
What really works for me is taking time building decks online and just playing every usable deck available. I enjoy deck building and perfecting both technique and the decks I build which takes a lot playtesting to learn what I got right or wrong and to learn the necessary ratios. Most people read video comments or other social media post. I mainly read Yugioh cards. I post an d answer my own comments but I generally don't read much else other than Yugioh cards. I've played Yugioh almost everyday for at least 3 hours and generally for longer and I've been playing like this for more than a year now.
The problem is, for us players who enjoyed the game and want to play master duel or official formats Konami is honestly doing nothing in the way of making it better, the floodgate hits are nice but it is in no way addressing that Konami is on a hat trick, a 3 run streak of Tier 0 formats, Tearlament, Kashtira and Snake-Eyes, they keep printing cards that should not exist, that make our lovingly built up collections uitterly irrelevant because it's not as if they CAN'T be beaten by an older deck, but it practically requires that they draw the worst hand possible into the best interruption an older deck can put up... and that just isn't that fun and it seems like a trend that will continue of consistently having the one meta deck to rule them all in every format going forwards, not a variety, not one that's just *slightly* better than the competition, but one deck after another with some busted mechanic that puts it ontop until Konami has milked the meta sheep and moves onto the next. They fundamentally do not seem to care about the health of the game.
@@Bob_Bob_B0b Oh very aware of GOAT and Edison but heres the thing, we're talking Konami and Konami doesn't really support them. As great as they might be, they are at the end of it all non-official.
@@four-en-teeyugioh already have alternate format like 3 vs 3 tag and boss duel in ocg, the problem is that it's not exactly popular in the actual core founding playerbase who play it.
Formats are always being made. The problem is the player base, to be honest. The player base is simply unreceptive to these casual formats and Konami doesn't bother supporting the ones they actually made. A dismissive playerbase and apathetic Konami kill these formats.
Cyber Dragon and Cyberdarks, Machina, Dragunity, sometimes off-center archetypes and nostalgia for beloved characters and unique equip strategies keep me glued to being a deliberate Rank C+ player cause there's only so many things you can do with certain archetypes that have more self control vs punishing the opponent. I like my Cyberdarks and Konami did well with making options for Cyber Dragons to segue some extended plays. I don't expect to be a top ranked player with Cyberdark, Horn, Keel, and Edge, but the love of those cards challenges my IQ to come up with ways I can control how long I can keep a game active or shut my opponent down. I think what people miss is the push-pull the game used to have.
Taking a break is a good idea when you start getting frustrated at things. Master duel was making me angry so often that I decided to just take a few months off, now I’m getting back into it with the illusion chimera deck and am having fun again.
It is a skill that must be practiced to actively refuse to optimize the fun out of games. It's easy to go down the path of optimization; it takes discipline to conserve and maintain the fun and health of the game. We've gone too far down the route of thinking that the sweatlords who want to turn everything into a math equation are the epitome of what the game should be when that couldn't be further from the truth. No matter the game, fun must be protected from efficiency.
Edison really rekindled my love of not only old school yugioh but made me much more interested in actually playing the modern tcg as well. Being able to swap between formats really helps keep everything feeling fresh to me.
I'm for sure one such player. I've played tournaments back when red eyes darkness dragon was new back before like elemental hero was an archetype. And games were very back and forth and was quite fun. I also liked syncros and it was great. I ended up starting to be disappointed with the state of the game when tournaments started becoming OTKs and FTKs ( one turn kills and first turn kills ). During the end of my time playing the game it was strictly a game that I played with friends and it worked cause we didn't run OTKs or FTKs when we were casually playing the game. It worked for me. I'm glad I found a way to enjoy I miss it cause I am now away from my friends like in a different cities that basically has no people to play with. I do have legacy of the duelist for Nintendo Switch and playing up through 5ds Era allowed me for the most part play in the nostalgia I have for the game and having characters up through Vrains allows me to also play some stuff that I didn't have when I essentially quit cause of my move. And most video game decks also aren't the complete infinite combos I was seeing that made me not like the competitive scene. So in that video game I got the best of both new and old. While I may never play a tournament again cause of how fast competitive is I can play stuff old and new on legacy of the duelist and have fun like I did. I didn't want to hate competitive cause when my mother passed in 2007 Yu-gi-oh tcg literally saved my life cause it gave me much of the social interaction I needed to move on from losing her. It however is also a reason I didn't want to just quit the game either cause my dark Magician deck contained and I still have it today my first ever Dark Magician Girl card I got from my parents for Christmas when the card was new to the game. Now the deck contains 3 different copies with 3 different artworks the first one from my parents the 2nd that if I remember was from a tin I got from my grandparents whom I also have lost over the years and one from my best friend whom saved my life when I was going through grief. That is my favorite deck I've ever built or played and while I sometimes talk to my best friend due to the miles between us now we can no longer really play like we once did. But I kept the deck due to sentimental value it has for me. Anyway likely a longer response than was expected but I had a lot to say cause of all the game has meant to me and how it went downhill for me competitively.
That's actually really cool, regarding your DMG...like something straight out of the anime. As for your friend, while it may not be the physical cards, you could always play YGO Omega with them, over the web. You would actually be able to recreate your IRL deck because it gives you access to all available cards.
Honestly, I really miss the special draft sets. I’m not really into the meta competitive game, but still love the deckbuilding aspect and the rush you get when opening a pack. Am I a zombie ? 🧟♂️
Should just play games that literally support draft/limited formats like Magic. Can learn from that format too easily for other formats for games. Yugioh used to have draft/sealed normally before they over relied on archetypes.
No, but draft as a concept doesn't rly work with Ygo. Nothing is more demoralizing than getting shitty cards on an RNG and just wasting it time. Go play MTG or another game that supports that.
Me and my buddies did a sealed home tournament with a booster box of the metal raiders rerelease, it was fun but super jank, and we needed to add in a second set of 6 packs made up of ioc and pharaoh’s servant to make somewhat coherent strategies. And even then that was after I allowed people choose one goat era boss monster to add to their deck in addition to the extra packs.
The amount of new one piece players at my locals that have quit Yugioh exploded lately. Its interesting cause they complained about the same thing, game ends by turn 2-3 😭
Commander has been the best decision I made in a while. There’s just so much more joy in that section of my LGS, since I can’t speak for the entire YGO microcosm. But in my area, people are just happier to be there when Commander decks are whipped out. No sunk cost fallacies in sight because there’s a table for each budget.
Oy Paul it's Ron. My Thursday group started committing to domain fomat while still playing in locals on Friday nights. Seems to be the fix to have actual fun with the game
"Official Formats" and "ban lists" are never going to fix the game. Older formats can be fun, but they are not all there is. It is the player's attitudes and mindsets that are making the game hard on older and new players. A ban list or altered format will momentarily fix a problem, but new problems will always arise if the root of the problem isn't fixed. How players actually play the game. How deck builds are managed, and strict card limitations. Since the game basically lets players use whatever they want with little to no restrictions (the ban list) decks are built on the premise that we have near-unlimited resources to draw from. Mid-game or even end-game deck restoring is almost unheard of. We play one way and if something goes wrong we just quit. Exodia draws decks are a prime example, they are capable of going first or second, and as long as nothing interrupts the flow, exodia will eventually be drawn out and a game over is declared. However, if even one card is misplayed or stopped, most players will just scoop and run. Instead of just quitting, try using one of the dozens of cards available to recover what was lost and continue the duel. If we continue to play the game as is, and if Konami continues to put band-aids on bleeding arteries, the game will eventually die off and the next "big thing" will take its place.
My problem with the Modern game is that newer decks have a whole gimmick where they play on your turn. The minute I normal or special summon they take like a 20 minute turn. On my turn and when I do continue after the 20 minute of extra deck monsters out of nowhere, I lose go figure. I didn't even get to play the game.
For me, Yugioh is only fun if you play anime format. Playing as Yugi, Kaiba or any other character. Recreating Anime situation in the middle of the duel. That gets me exited about the game.
I play the absolute hell out of Duel Links. Speed Duels are honestly the most fun I've had dueling in a while and I like the characters since I'm a pretty big fan of the anime.
I've been getting back into yugioh with some friends and it's been really fun buying 3X extra decks, building them as we please using the available cards or even trading and building our small little community with our structure deck meta, wich still combos really well, plays a few handtraps, but it's also diverse, cheap and fun! I eventually want to start upgrading my decks, and playing more around the meta, but honestly the most fun I've had playing yugioh has just beem facing my friends and having a laugh while playing Shaddoll vs Endymion or FireKings vs Traptrix
I left Yu-Gi-Oh and went to Pokemon. I feel like printing lower rarity versions of cards would help Yu-Gi-Oh especially in price point. This allows you to play the deck you like on a budget and the higher rarity is more like a flex.
This is why I tend to play customs friendly formats with close friends. As long as you have something in place to keep power levels in check, it's much more fun and diverse than the real game
PAUL, BRO, I don't think I consider myself a yugioh zombie. Like my only current dissatisfaction for Duel Links specifically is that I can't deck build. My go to fav deck is Blue Eyes. I can't find myself satisfied in ranked anymore cuz everyone else is either playing meta, OR they literally play an iteration of my deck so much better than me.
I love the "house format". Agreeing on a way to play the game that you and your friends enjoy is a great way to break up the tcg monotony. That's the only way to have that format that you can be COMPLETELY satisfied with the game
I feel like I super relate to this as I currently don't play what Konami wants me to play. I enjoy building past and current archetypes and collecting decks that are important to me. That's how I have fun with Yu-Gi-Oh
I agree about quitting, was there for the OG and stop for a bit, when I came back with an OG deck and XYZ with Pendulum came out, it tick me off so bad I quite again for 4 years+ then I got curious and experimented with new deck and new tactics.
A lot of faults and I have had my gripes with Komoney, but then my heart softened and did a complete 180 as soon as they announced Melodious support which finally bought them into relevancy after 10 long suffering years. Hate how this game does this to you that one small piece of support can change the complete outlook. 😂
Team APS is basically the only thing connecting me to Yugioh. I stopped playing in 2006 and tried Duel Links in like 2017, but it was way too modern for me and I stopped after a couple months. Around 2022 I was getting the Yugioh itch again and discovered Team APS and really like the more casual, sometimes Yugiboomer, take and became a fan even though I have no interest in playing modern. I actually started playing Flesh and Blood as a Yugioh alternative since the modern game has gone way beyond the point of return for me, and I’m having a lot of fun. I also started playing Speed Duel and it’s way more the level and speed I like, but I only have one person to play with and we only play like once or twice a month. My LGS is only Advanced format, but I would be happy if they did more Speed Duel stuff.
@@Bob_Bob_B0b Thanks, but my main thing with Edison is that it’s primarily online and I 99.999% prefer playing with physical cards. I’m perfectly fine sticking with Flesh and Blood (played at my first YCS-like tournament a couple months ago and new set coming out in a couple weeks) as my main TCG and doing Speed Duel everyone once in a while.
My friends and I were so fed up with the state of YGO we decided to take a break and try other card games. We're having a blast playing Pokemon and One Piece!
This was very informative and can really relate to some things your said. I used to play religiously in the beginning around 2002 but as I got older and busier I fell off it around the time synchro came around. Now that I have some free time, I find the game too hard and toxic to re-enter. Especially since I haven't learned the majority of new mechanics. Like I have no idea how link and pendulum works, and a general idea on XYZ. The current platforms make it difficult to actually try to reengage. I tried master duel a few times and even being rank matched with supposedly new players find myself pretty regularly ftkd or player who wants a faster game and disconnects, which makes it hard to learn and discouraging to want to keep playing. I still really like the game but find it hard to play anymore.
I'm gonna disagree with everyone above me, as Gawatsu is absolutely right. People say Konami would make more money if the customers were happy, but so many current Yu-Gi-Oh! players hate where the game is at, yet continue to buy set after set, probably in hope that if they stick with the game long enough, it'll feel like it used to when we were younger. The only way Konami changes how they do things is when people stop buying cards and the company takes a financial hit. But for now, they're going to keep short-printing meta relevant cards so you buy as many packs as possible, and then ban those same cards in a couple months so they can sell you completely new metas.
@@realhollowapathy and the same people that complain about meta changing stuff would complain that the meta is too stale and they got tired of it and they want a change. YGO Master Duel is a great example of that, you play a deck for 2 months and then wait for a new deck to spice things up because YOU GET BORED of playing the same deck over and over again, it's impossible to balance all decks, especially IRL since they can't go around and change card text left and right. But it works in master duel because the game is free and really free to play friendly so changing meta decks doesn't require that much or even no money at all depending on how often you build new decks.
Taking a break is great advice. I have played only prog and old formats with my friends during my break while I have been waiting for my time to come back to TCG and modern yugioh. been a great 7 years
I exist in a weird state where I like the game more now than I ever did, growing up or otherwise. All of my favorite archetypes are recent, and I love how intense and complicated the game is now. Sure, I don't like everything, like Tearlaments and omni-negate boards, but overall, I love the way the game is now. I don't know if I'm just shutting my eyes to problems there are, but all things considered, if the game wasn't like the way it is now (I got back into it a couple of years ago), then I'm not sure I would be playing it.
And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. This was just aimed as a different audience, the player who finds they're not happy with the state of affairs but is just going through the motions and forcing themselves to play.
For me it's forming like a comradery with my friends, like it's us vs. the people at locals or regionals. Like how far can we take our janky decks and improve on it. We have 2 decks, the one we're improving each time (like for me Blue-eyes) and a meta competing deck that is relatively cheap like I use Labrynths. We would switch between them each tournament and see how we do. We end up taking up like 3/4 top spots at our locals each time and it's so satisfying to see the dubs against those top tier decks like voiceless or snake eyes lol
You hit the nail on the head bro you gotta find your own fun! I love finding and learning different ways to play. I don’t play meta, I’ve topped locals and lost a lot. But all in all I just play what I want and try my best to compete and win. The only parts I don’t like is playing against disgruntle players who take a game way to serious.
Referencing the last bit of advice paul gave with "just quit if you arent enjoying it". There are players out there that would enjoy your cards way more than you do currently.
So, this was well said. I like the suggestions, especially being optimistic (aka learn the game as it is & is becoming). I had to learn the mechanics that I thought I would hate (Pendulum & Link Monster, for example), but learning about them has made playing fun.
Hey newly returning playerish! I think you bring up a lot of good points. I quit Yugioh in 2012 when my deck (six samurai) got really limited by the ban list and a lot of the cards I had paid to pull from packs got generic releases. Last year I started watching a lot of mast duel content and played myself which made me wanna try and convert my old six samurai deck to the modern format. Now that I’ve invested they banned a lot of general cards that supported my deck (borreload, baronne, and Isolde) Feels like when I quit the first time. Why invest in all these cards if they’re just gonna banned/limited in the next few months. I’ll probably keep playing master duel but it is a bummer cause I did enjoy buying cards. Now that I have money as an adult and can afford to invest in a deck I like but I can’t afford to buy a new deck every time they drop a new banlist 😅
I was in this position in 2020 - became extremely disillusioned with the product, rarities and card prices etc, so I decided to quit for a few months. And then a few months became 4 years, and every time I've tried to get back into Yu-Gi-Oh, the same things I've always hated about it seem to be ever present. I'll always love this game but I don't think I can ever touch it again, and your video pretty much explains why I feel that way. Appreciate you uploading this, man.
Everything you said is true, and there’s a lot of valid complaints that the community can have about the game. And you could even quit, take a break, try something else. But honestly, there is no other game that gives you the unique rush tingly blood pumping and excitement that this game gives out.
I think what keeps me involved in the Yugioh franchise is the memories of childhood. Opening booster packs, pulling a holo, tins for Christmas, the original show, etc. to add to that, I was once a great player way back when, so even if I don’t play anymore I still like to know what’s going on, what new decks are hot, which cards got banned, etc. for example there’s a game called f.e.a.r. That I was once one of the best players in the world at (multiplayer)I haven’t played consistently in over a decade, but I still like to check in on what new players are considered the best now, the new maps, who got caught hacking, etc. once you’ve been submerged and invested so much time and dedication to one hobby, it’s hard to ever truly let go of it. Like, I’ve had stints where I didn’t go back to it for 5+ years, but sooner or later I check back in on the thing I once loved. Kind of like checking on an old ex girlfriend you spent years with.
Only thing that keeps me tied into it is my friend throwing monthly "rouge" tournaments. The issue is there's a few players who take that to mean, "play the best staple monsters in your rouge deck of choice." Ive enjoyed magic more lately and highly suggest yugioh players give it a shot. You don't even need to buy a ton of cards, everyone just pick up a precon you think is cool.
I left the game for 3 years. I kept my old cards and actually kept collecting them got back into Goat format. Really love it. Then Domain format (also really love) and now starting on Master Duel but it took 3 years to get passed this burned out feeling with the normal format of the TCG.
Honestly, my biggest thing during Tear Zero and Kash format was just working on trying to redesign Deckmaster Format. It kinda spiraled out of control because I kinda like the high power floor of modern Yugioh (i joined in 2021, so my favorite decks just lined up with a lot of the modern lore decks like Dogmatikas, Branded and so forth). I figure if I went back to developing it, i'd probably remove the elements i borrowed from Junior Journey and instead bump up the speed of flip and gemini monsters. It'd also maybe be fun to rethink trap cards so that there's more incentive to play them, maybe develop a mechanic to grab them from the deck.
the moment you said domain i was hyped i hope you guys play domain with the proffesor i truly think its big names like teamaps and tolarian that can really get people onto this format
I'm not someone who's been in the yugioh community a long time, but I've always taken to heart the "if you dont like one format, play another" to heart, since i usually just play with my little cousins. Our decks are okay, nothing crazy, but we just have our own banlist, almost like playground rules. I understand not everyone has that opportunity, but that alongside the nice people at my locals are the reason I'm still in the game with my Dino deck
As a player returning from synchro era I feel like taking a lengthy break really did help. I was bitter about the extra deck becoming a consistency boosting toolbox and i played a lackluster spider deck that couldnt keep up. Ive come back with a fresher perspective and have been thinking tirelessly about how to update my old deck (its very hard ho boy) and have been enjoying that alone. I look forward to playing at my locals again and seeing of anyone is surprised by my unseen tactics and focusing less on winning.
I always have the notion that in all card games are always changing and that’s life. You always want to live in a certain time but we just gotta adapt like it or not
A rule that some friends of mine and I have put in that has helped a lot is "You can't break your opponent's board until the first Battle Phase/ start of turn 3 (depending on what comes first)", that way while mechanics like Hand traps still get used, you don't need to be dependent on them in your first main phase. It's still quick, but still let's both players do something in their first turns (provided they have the cards to do something). I feel like that could be a rule supported officially because it's always an awful feeling to be starting your first turn and you can't do anything because of five omni negates that are ready to beat you to death after all your attempts to start your turn end up in the graveyard and/or banished.
I've just come back from a 6 month break, I didn't plan it but I wasn't interested in any decks and didn't enjoy the meta at the time (unchained, rescue ace and lab at my locals). I wasn't enjoying playing, I stopped going to regionals and felt stressed when I came home from locals. I'd felt that way since the start of Tear 0 tbf. I got married and went on honeymoon so I missed 3 weeks of playing and I felt better for not playing in that time, so I just kept not going. I sat out the Snake Eye format completely, then I recently found myself interested in playing Yubel after the LEDE stuff dropped and that pulled me back into the game. I feel motivated to play again and now I know I can just step away if I ever feel like that again
The "problem" is the internet. Now with easily purchased singles and everyone being able to easily netdeck even at locals people will play optimized decks. Back in the day there was a competitive scene but at locals the meta wasn't as clear cut. I remember people playing decks we thought were the best well after it wasn't what people at Regionals or higher were using. I netdeck too so I am not just saying it is bad but it changed everything. It would be like playing pokemon at a local tournament. Back in the day you could take a random team and do well in certain age groups but now all but the youngest kids are bringing mostly optimized teams.
So true. My friends and I tend to play our own weird formats with strange rules. But in Master Duel I tend to play the boardbreaker role. I like when my opponent’s board is like a puzzle to solve. That, and using weird strategies that surprise my opponent: like summoning Ash and using her as the Tuner she is to Synchro summon etc. That has been my fun. It shows when other players try to do the same without being try-hards. And that, in my mind, makes for the best kind of yugioh. Also please, try Forbidden Memories format, its a lot of fun (allowed cards are only from the Forbidden Memories videogame card pool, and you can only play one card per turn from your hand to the field).
