No. This is still a small percentage of women. Unforgivable and even one is too many. But it still is a small percentage. I don’t justify the terrible things these people we said to have done but actions have to be considered with the situation in Germany at that time and prior to this time. With the size of these organisations it would have been such an overwhelming experience to behold it would be difficult not to consider this must be the right thing to do, the way forward. For most basically educated individuals from an impoverished background it would have been difficult not to consider this is the correct way to behave regarding how these guards managed their work. They were well paid and looked after by the system. Not to mention the influence of the relentless propaganda. I do not disbelieve these accounts however I have heard similar descriptions in nick name and behaviour applied to many different female guards so I don’t think each individual account is reliable. It would also be difficult not to conform to the standards as they could not appear weak in front of their colleagues or the prisoners. The young age of the guards is not really relevant other than the younger individuals would have believed in their opportunity for a career and they felt they had become something more important than they ever could have imagined before the war. I agree! First of all only about 10% of the camp"s personnel were brought to trial. It should have been 100%. And 100% should have been sent to Birkenau for 18 months (2 winters) under the identical conditions the prisoners were subjected to. i.e. long AM & PM roll calls, very little clothing, small portions of thin soup and bread, wooden bunks, unheated barracks and after 18 months THEN serve whatever sentence was given.
