Matthew, I'm 16 and I absolutely look up to you and Hendrix as my favorite guitar players. You have such a way of just expressing yourself through the guitar that I've never heard before so soulful and I'm completely infatuated with your playing style and absolutely love your videos. You're such a talented dude and so young too and I was wondering what some of your favorite albums are? I absolutely adore you and love the tutorial videos and ESPECIALLY the gear. Thanks, Baron.

Correct about the finish. In 1968 Fender started using Polyester but what most people don't understand is that the Polyester was for the undercoat on the body and the neck...they still used Nitro for the topcoat on the bodies and the headstock face which explains why they aged the way they did. This continued throughout the 1970s until the early 1980s when they switched to full Polyurethane(except for the reissues which continued using Nitro).

My 1974 Telecaster Custom has the three bolt neck. I previously owned a 1970 standard Telecaster with that same Bigsby setup on it when I got it. I removed the Bigsby and converted to a standard Tele bridge as soon as possible. The stock early seventies pickups were microphonic with weak output. "Typical seventies piece of ash" I misheard that for a second and chuckled.

When I found that guitar in the broken down house, it was a sticky mess. The clear coat has reacted with the original case and turned into a gooey mess. It sat in the case, unplayed, with no strings on it, bridge was missing, for at least 20 years. The case had totally rotted away around it. The neck was so back bowed it was unplayable. With the truss rod loose, I had to to put a giant C clamp by the the 7th fret and left it that way for about a month...

Point of order here: The logos would not adhere at all to poly, so Fender kept spraying headstock faces in nitro through the 70s until they came up with a solution. My '68 Maple Cap made the cutoff and has a full nitro neck, but as is the case with your instrument, you will very often see 68+ necks with a clean poly neck but a checked headstock.

The 3 bolt neck was part of the "Micro Tilt" system introduced by Fender around 1971. At the time it was considered an upgraded feature which is why on Telecasters of that era you only find it on Customs and Deluxe models. The system itself was great but other deficiencies in manufacturing at the time gave them a wrongly earned bad reputation.

The 1972+ Fender Telecaster Custom guitars also had the 3-bolt Tilt-Necks. This 1975 Tele sounds great, and no worse for all the wear. I see it got the wrong router cut on the upper shoulder. That is the smoothed out cut, as opposed to the deeper V as seen on pre-1973 Teles, and those of today. Fender/CBS bought had bought routers that couldn't cut it (literally).

Matthew, I think you should brush paint it with white gloss, the neck aswell so it’s all coordinated. Clean the black marks on the fretboard or even sand them down and put some thick glossy varnish on it. Then put a black scratch plate on it(you can make them yourself with an old bathtub from a skip) then to get the sound you like, some nice pickups from a Yamaha Pacifica. What do you think? @@MatthewScottmusic : If I’m not mistaken, CBS bought new routing machines and these machines just couldn’t make the right curve. They did use the old and the new routing machines simultaneously for a while. That’s why you can still find the right body shape on late sixties Telecasters and even on a few early seventies ones. There are also a bunch of Telecasters with a body that is somewhere in the middle of the two shapes. I’m not sure how that happened.

I'm pretty sure he "sweet spots" his tube amps to get that "electricity" in the tone. Setting the volume right where it starts to break up when you pick hard, but still has a nice cleaner sound when you soften up. Its hard to replicate with solid state amps. Its very common for people to use a tube screamer pedal with the gain turned down, but the tone and the volume turned high--> into a tube amp to get a very glitzy tone without too much distortion. PS: I think he also has a scooped EQ with a mid spike in the 2.5k range, and that can add to the effect a fair bit. Could be wrong.

@@isaiahmcchesney-kleynhans764 I have a 15w blues jr tube amp but my problem is that in order to get any kind of break up in the tone it would be ear shatteringly loud. I’ll try using my overdrive pedal like you described though, that sounds like it might help.

It's not disgusting. It's beautiful. And what a sound!

I love the look of it. And it is a testament that 70's Fenders can sound and play fantastic. Even a Tele converted not to be string through. Like any great guitar setup is paramount. And of course being able to play as the sound starts at the fingers.

Owned a '72 Tobacco sunburst Tele, but it wasn't as gnarly and cool as this one. I'd gig with the TV Special LP and this Tele and call it a day.

I'm guessing to get that wonderful tone w/o pedals, it's pretty loud? Always love your playing and that great tone... I'm praying you'll be gigging soon...(?) cheers

The 1st thing you played on this video was like screaming 'I'm Jimmy Page, let me out!' Love the 'road' worn looks. You are a young man you could handle 9 pounds for a couple/few songs a night. This guitar needs to continue on the road for people to hear.

Matthew, this Guitar sounds and plays great, what tone, you are a lucky Man to own it, a Guy went to look at a car one time, to buy it, and the Seller kept on saying Look at the Paint Job, Look at it, the Buyers response was PAINT DON'T MAKE IT RUN, LET ME HEAR THE ENGINE RUN, Can You Dig It Man, that is what your Guitar is all about, rock on, Cousin Figel
