"A hand for every hand that Hurt her" is such a cool line but also very very scary

one thing I can appreciate about this series is the happy ending, I love how they gave the children the justice and rest they deserved, and healed Jess, allowing the family to live happily. I think that's a beautiful thing that is missing from most media now. in a market that rewards bad ending in horror, its nice to see something with a good ending that's done very well.

this is the first analog horror thats actually made me happy, the good ending and hearing jess actually speak warmed my heart, even if its just a fictional scary story

On the topic of children's art, I remember the children's drawing in the FNAF games giving this added layer of emptiness and paranoia. The animatronics are seen as friendly faces to the children, and the drawings on the wall kinda shows in almost a taunting manner that no matter what happens to you, the children will never know or understand the true horror behind those masks.

Reminds me of 'Mama' 2013 by Guillermo del Toro, it's an empathic way to view Ghosts, they are the antagonists but ultimately they are victims. In 'Mama' a ghost living in a cabin in the woods adopts two girls who's father killed their mother and was about to kill them, she cares for them as well as she could for a few years until they are found, she haunts and threatens their new adoptive family, but in actuality this ghost only wanted her child that was taken from her because she was disabled, taking her child and plunging to their death, she haunted the cabin until the girls arrived at her care. I love that Guillermo del Toro rarely uses ghosts as the villains but as victims of greater evil or tragedy and mostly care or aid protagonists while still being terrifying.

The story it’s tragic but for me it’s refreshing that main protagonist and her young patient survived whole ordeal and actually sent those ghost free. I personally prefer those kind of endings.

One of my favorite parts is that Adam even though he just died, murdered brutally, He sees this monstrous looking childs spirit that had been haunting his daughter and his last thought before ascending was to try and reach out and take her with him. He was a good man.

Children are pretty cool when they’re not little shits. I worked security at an art exhibit and I was in a section for kids art and I tell you, it was the most creative yet messed up shit I’ve ever seen. They were putty art and it was “humanity abstract”. A business man like figure with tendrils from its torso, a creature that likes like a dinosaur bit was hollow inside; really strange but “new” creatures. I wish I had my old phone to have the pictures but they were fascinatingly haunting.

Her little voice saying "they're free now" always gives me chills. It always makes me cry. I watched the movie fo of this a little while ago and i can't stop thinking about it. It touched me.

Horror stories with good endings are underrated

When I heard you say "and the Clarks, a beloved family who owned a burger shack" I was immediately scared this series would fall into predictability with the plot line being that the clarks killed children and used their meat for burgers. I was pleasantly surprised though! The story we ended up getting was a lot better than I thought it was going to be.

"they are stuck in a loop that makes no sense" resonates hard with me, it almost hurt to read

I've been waiting for vintage eight to get the recognition he deserves

I genuinely got kind of thrown off with the "I understand you've been having trouble sleeping." Line because I had moved my attention elsewhere and am an insomniac who typically sleeps in 36-48 hour cycles not 24 hour ones so it felt super weird and personal all the sudden to suddenly be 'told' that lol. 'Certainly brought my attention RIGHT back on over to ya; I love the style of your videos!

I'd like to point out that, near the end of CutH, you can actually hear a faint background sound that, to me, sounded like a door opening behind the voice actress, as though implying there may be one last loose end to the story overall. Perhaps one final ghost left, or a still-living child trafficker. My question for confirmation of this was met with something to the effect of "That was a chair squeaking, I just left it in because it sounded creepy". And honestly? I think that's both kind of hilarious and kind of endearing.

Honestly, I was able to see the reveal with the Clarke’s from the very moment they were introduced. It seems too easy, and maybe that was intentional. I think the creator wanted us to know that, but wanted to make us desire for the characters to know that to avoid the danger. Knowing the threat of the Clarke’s so early made them this looking presence in the background I was dying to learn more about and see exactly what they did to those kids. It also made the moment Julia realized who they really were feel so satisfying like “finally, you see what I’ve known for so long”, and it makes the horror of her seeing that she shouldn’t have talked to them all the more terrifying. I won’t rate them as antagonists as I don’t think they go that high, but as tools in the atmosphere of the series, I’d say they are nearly S class. Every piece of information we learn about the kids makes this seemingly sweet old couple look all the more heinous and leads you to think they have some masterful control or something to have gotten away with their horrible acts so many times. Seriously, I love the atmosphere in this series. The pauses, the slow moving of the scenes that allows each moment to breathe and leave you on the edge of your seat to see what happens next, even if you can already predict what will happen. When I finished the series, it was on a night where I said I’d only get to the hour mark and watch the rest the next night but I got so captivated that I told myself I had to finish it all. The skill of the creator is unquestionable. I know this is disjointed, but I just have two more things to say. The first is on the Homework. I felt that these moments were some of the scariest because of how unpredictable they were. In these scenes I imagined Adam and Jess in the house talking. Here we have a father disconnected from his daughter and possibly blames himself for the loss of her voice. He has no idea how little control he has in these situations. When he started talking about Jess’s “imaginary friends” I was terrified because I know Jess had told us that not all of the kids under the house were nice. I didn’t know if one of them would do something to him or the therapist if they said something wrong. We know that these spirits have powers but we don’t see much of them through the series, and really only one time is that power used against the protagonists. The thought of the spirits just lashing out suddenly because of some ignorant remark kept me holding my breath every Homework scene and therapy scene. Last thing I’ll say is that I don’t think Dean was necessary for the story. He didn’t really add or detract anything. He’s just there.

This series actually stuck with me. Its truly horrifying because despite the ghosts its very ground in reality. And the ghosts allow us to focus on the children who went through basically a form of tort*re. I didnt mind catching the villains early. For me it was more exploring the story with Jess.

I don't actually think a twist that can be figured out a bit "too" early is necessarily a bad thing. The works of HP Lovecraft are great examples of writings whose twists are frankly downright predictable, yet still manages to build suspense while building up to their "reveals".

bro i watched Children Under the House a few weeks ago and was SO enraptured by it, that ending was just a a a a a a a but i remember having a nightmare a few nights later involving the kid who was torn in half. ofc her look was disturbing in the video, but i wasnt bothered by it, but she freaked me out in my dream. kicker is, i KNEW she was from this story, so while i was freaking terrified, i was like "but why tho"

Tbh, the ending genuinely made me smile. I’m a sucker for happy endings :)

This series was the first analogue horror I got the courage to watch and it was so good!!

With so many horror series ending with some ominous final message or feeling of doom, it's nice to get one with a genuinely happy ending once in a while.

I feel like We need more horror where the ghost, while terrifying is just as much a victim as the people being haunted, anyone got more suggestions for something like that?

It’s nice that we got a happy ending. I always like horror stories that end on a wholesome note without spoiling the fear from earlier

I can't believe you mentioned our show! We were wondering where the heck all our new fans came from - and here we are getting an incredibly flattering shout out from such an awesome creator. Holy cow, thank you for taking the time to mention Angel Hare with that glowing review!

Something that really gets me about this series is how the ghosts and the Clarks are depicted. This series had a very rare thing for me, which was to present something that I found really, genuinely, viscerally disturbing... I cant think of much else that did that, aside from GHE. When Mia was introduced, the drawing of her came out of nowhere, and there's something just so fundamentally distressing about that particular drawing that really got me good. It's hard to explain exactly what did it... part of it was the drawing itself, it's just awful in a way that's hard to define, and then it gets more awful when you think of what Jess must have seen. Sure, Mia is by far the most positive of the spirits, protective of Jess, and only wants to help, but based on Jess' drawings, the form Mia took was absolutely horrific. Granted, Mia isnt the most messed up of the spirits... that definitely goes to Kate, with the arms going all over the place, but Mia was the one that got me the most. And then there was the Clarks. Yeah, they werent super unique as villains, but what gets me about them was how they see it all. They say things like "it was just business", and "of course we didnt want to kill them, we never wanted to see a child in pain", and it really shows to me that they had convinced themselves that they really hadnt done anything wrong. They felt no guilt as they were like, well, we had no control over what the guys the kids were sold to did with them. Of course, they then show that they did even more, with having murdered Adam and planning to kill the rest of them. I wonder if they would have tried to rationalize any guilt from that away as well. If they hadnt gotten obliterated, that is. The one thing that did bother me was the ending... mostly good, but I found it very odd that Jess would later not remember it. It just seemed like such a massive event that it would stick to her for good, probably requiring a lot of therapy as time went on. So the "oh, she just doesnt know it happened, she's fine, no problem" seemed a bit out of place to me. Spectacular series overall though. I'm glad you covered it here, I never would have found it otherwise. That whole channel looks like an absolute goldmine of horror content, I cant wait to watch all the rest of the stuff there.

I like how it has a fairly happy ending, the spirits move on and Jess speaking for the first time

I love how the ghosts look like the people after the ‘this hole was made for me’ story. Those still gross me out.

Ever since you tweeted about this I wondered if you were gonna make a video about it. I’m so glad and excited to hear your thoughts and talk about Children Under the House at last! This did not disappoint.

One thing on the twist of it being the Clark’s, in the individual uploads some people commented on figuring that out and got hearts from vintage eight, so figuring out the puzzle and the twist early seems encouraged.

I just watched the children under the house last night, surprised to see this video the day after. The children under the house kinda sticks with me due to the fact I believe most children can understand from a perspective of what Jess went through. Just imagination running wild but maybe just maybe what children see aren’t all just fiction. I’d love to know more about Dean too, he reminds me of myself with the phone and blah blah blah drawing. I also wish there wasn’t a happy ending, more of a neutral ending would have been nice. It made it feel unrealistic which it obviously is but I’d love more of a ending that makes me wonder. I also can’t believe the Clark’s did all this like what?? 😭😭

Okay but like rewatching cuz just- I’m studying art therapy- this story hits an itch. I love ghosts and wanna help kids very badly. This story HITS AN ITCH (and can relate to- well- breeze on) either way!!! Very much appreciate you sharing this and all the work that goes into everything you do

Glad to see Vintage Eight getting some love! Besides this excellent series, they also have the many, many trials of Tangipahoa Parrish; even the shorter works like The Swarm are equally engrossing. Can't believe that this is the first video I've seen talking about their work.

If you're ever looking for something different, this account is currently hosting an analog horror series set in the JJBA universe. It's like 13-14 episodes in, midway through there's a style change that kinda makes it an experimental animation/analog horror series. But yeah like if anybody ever wanted that, it's here lol.

I love Vintage Eight’s videos. They have a slight realism to it. From personal experience, I can relate. I have seen “spirits” when I was a child. They were harmless. One levitated a popcorn bowl and the other was a kid in a oversized orange hoodie in my school’s library. Of course, my parents didn’t believe me when I told them. I called my Mimi, my mom’s mom, and asked her if kids could see dead people. She said kids have a wild and overactive imagination, but it’s possible. She then mentioned a possibly haunted doll she had when she lived in my house, when my mom and aunt were kids. I then asked my cousin about it and she confirmed she did see ghosts that were in the basement of my great aunt’s house before she moved. My cousin was six when she saw them and said it is the reason she doesn’t go in the basement. The basement looks like a comfy man cave. Carpeted floors, a bar, tv, and a big couch, so it didn’t look creepy. My brother was even afraid to go in the basement, despite there being a party or if I’m in there. As for the drawing aspect, when I was working at a daycare, it was before the day started, so the kids were playing with toys or coloring. Those kids are absolutely delightful and fun. One wanted me to color with her, so I got a coloring page for us, and we started. I was coloring in the picture, while she doodled on the back. She doodled a tall black figure with a creepy smile. I was unnerved and asked her what she drew. She said it watches her sleep every night and that it’s a friendly shadow. I have seen something similar like that in the corner of my room. I just chuckled and kept coloring.

The lights out clip scared me. I watched that movie like 8 years ago and recognized it as soon as I seen it. I was like 6 years old and it still scares me to the point of me never wanting to watch it again.

You should check out the Monument Mythos! It's a really good series, continuing on today with the Nixonverse and such. It's a good take on the analog horror scene, and even comedic at times. It's really great and underrated.

22:22 Yeah moving and the whole concept of it... been something I went through too... for me it was moving from "the land down under" which I'd already been living at for 10 years(Melbourne, in case you're curious), to the United States(The state of Massachusetts, ironically for Sagan, assuming he reads this) for 7 years, only to move back to the land down under after all that... Definitely not a terrifying concept in of itself, but the underlying sense of loss is absolutely palpable(or atleast it is for me) - the loss of friends who you only kept up with in-person, your identity, and more...

The descriptions of the Children were some of the most metal things I've ever heard and I love it

In my opinion, I feel that The Macabre Experiments needs some more attention. Sure, on the surface, it's typical, however making a story using Creepypastas in an analog horror and making me interested in characters such as Jeff the Killer makes me excited for how this series will continue. It brings up spore based supernatural mystery and brings up many eerie elements, so please I recommend checking it out

So there is this underrated horror web series called the Monument Mythos by Mister Manticore, mostly taking place around the early 30s and late 60s with a few exceptions. In this there is something in the Monuments across America, I won't spoil anything as I recommend you give it a watch but its quite interesting, this web series is actually alternate history, and even references our own history. The series went with a minimalist style, having still shots, drawings, simple animation, etc, but man does he nail this style of storytelling. It's still currently being made. Its season 2 ties into another much smaller web series called Corner Folk, made by the same guy. You should make a video of it.

revolving around that opening, I never thought of the scariness as haunting, I always thought of more logical and reasonable possibilities like fear of home invaders, hidden cameras, and snakes.

This reminds me of the oddly horrifying and violent things I drew as a kid to vent my then undiagnosed paranoia, anxiety, and autism. There's a lot of psychological torture and brainwashing in my early comics. No clue why, but I totally plan to reference them in my own horror comedy webcomic now.
