09/10/2019 An exceptional conference with Iain McGilchrist, world-renowned author of The Master and his Emissary. The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World, psychiatrist, lecturer and former Oxford literary scholar.
Cognition is not one unified relation between the mind and the world, but it is conditioned by the hemispherical division of the brain such that each of us perceives reality in two quite different, potentially conflicting ways. This has important consequences both for how we understand knowledge, belief, certainty, reason and feeling, and for the emphasis put on each of these dispositions at various stages in human evolution and culture.

Dr McGilchrist was waved off this field; told not to touch it "with a barge pole"! I am thinking that he threw in the pole and then jumped in after it! And look where it took him. . .and us. Shows that you must get out of the Boat to really experience the stormy sea. Life lessons for us all. Thank you Iain, the treasure you found enriches us all and one.

I recently “discovered” Dr. McGilchrist’s work and I find myself to be consistently in awe of the ease with which he integrates and articulates a holistic understanding of such broad and diverse areas of inquiry. Simply brilliant!

I could listen to this man, scientist, philosopher, human thinker for hours to enrich my Impoverished mundane knowledge , and awakened my right hemisphere to the depth, beauty and the reality of the 3 d of life.

It's such a shame the powerpoint is hard to see - I would love to see the powerpoint. But besides that... Dr. McGilchrist is at his best form here, leading the audience through history, neuroscience, literature, psychiatry, empiricism, experiments, culture, biology, into a new paradigm. What a great man.

This is by far one of THE greatest presentations he has ever given on this subject simply because he is comfortable and in every other venue he speaks as if he is aware of being judged and wants to make a good and lasting impression.

An easily understood fascinating wide grasp of how the disciplines of Science and the Arts are related, which has prompted me to read for a start Professor Mc Gilchrist's book his fruit his twenty years of study.And his humane lecture has reassured me that my right hemisphere of my brain is still after many years functions to my advantage.

This explains the internal monologue and dialogues, or the talking to ourselves that we do. Its just the right hemisphere talking and arguing with the left and these two rarely agree.

As others have correctly stated , the camera is poorly placed. Everything to our left of Mcgilchrist is , in this case, a complete waste of space. It should've been shifted over to focus on his PowerPoint.

42:00 this is incorrect, when visual area V5 is damaged in the left hemisphere it causes akinetopsia in the right visual field, and when it's damaged in the right hemisphere it causes akinetopsia in the left visual field

I would hope Dr. McCilchrist will collaborate with non Western cultures on meaning making that occurs through their cultural lens. His theorizing references a Eurocentric world view.

Why is the book based on this - The Divided Brain - is still not available in print or as an audiobook? Only Kindle and Kobo versions are out.

I believe you can on a PC. If you click the options/3 dots (next to share), you can open transcript and copy the whole thing. You can shut off the time stamps as well so they don't jumble up the text.

The words you say resonate with me. Perhaps in another time you were an adviser to Kings and Queens. The winds of change are powering our ships of destiny to a new and exciting frontier. The winds of change are ever present. The old systems of politics and economics which seem to be patriarchal , dysfunctional, left hemisphere and in need of some fine tuning. Any way enough said . These differences are quite obvious between some Myers-Brigg/Jung personality types, if you look at INTP's for example, they seem to fit the right brain characteristics quite well, but although they are one of the wise, intelligent in the MBTI's, they tend to not succeed in life, ending with less than 1/3 of the average income, which is just enough to survive (so certainly not a good way to influence the world) ! On the other extreme are covert narcissists, or at least some of the traits found in the dark triad types, who function with this praise/hate way of the left hemisphere, and are often the most successful individuals.

Probably. He has a quite a few and some intrresting interviews spread out over the years. He made a documemtary as well but the talks and book are more interesting. Make sure you watch the RSA animate: the divided brain(on youtube)
