The DJI Avata 3.5 Upgrade Flies Like a Dream, Don't Do It.

I recently completed the Avata 3.5 Upgrade with a kit form Axis Flying. It's pretty incredible the change it makes in the aircraft, it turn the Avata into what it should have been from the beginning. That doesn't meant I'd recommend it or do it again if I had the chance. I walk you through all the ideas, parts, and pitfalls and try to help you answer for yourself if the upgrade is worth it.

Just got yourself a sub, even though I'm not in agreement with you on whether to upgrade the Avata lol! I commend the honesty and not endorsing everything aimlessly, like so many youtubers trying to get free gear and subs. I personally had a slightly unique situation that led me to upgrade my Avata. I had bought the stock Avata and tried getting that "punch" out of it since it struggled to recover from a dive, and I stopped trusting the drone with the tumbles. I bought some 3 blade MAS props and threw those on, which subsequently broke on me in flight, ripping a motor off the frame and crashing into a field. After remounting the motor, I had an ESC error after booting up. Since I had bought the drone second hand on eBay, I didn't have refresh, so went about fixing it myself as I love to tear into things. Ordered the kit, along with a brand new ESC since I didn't know if I had fried a motor or the actual ESC. Upgrade went pretty well, and I'm enjoying being able to have all the tech of DJI in a drone that flies like it should have from the beginning. I also love being able to launch and recover in "normal", since it's incredibly safe and keeps you from having a freak crash as you're doing so. If my Avata hadn't crashed and needed the repairs, I wouldn't have upgraded. Like you said, the risk and work to do so wasn't worth it. I would have just got a more capable cinewhoop instead of the cost/risk/work to upgrade. But... I'm loving this drone so much now. It's so smooth to fly and I haven't had one single tumble since. Just thought I'd share my experience for you and anyone considering upgrading to the 3.5". Either way, loved the video and thanks for the information!

When I bought the DJI FPV drone last year I had high hopes that a company would make a kit for that drone. Unfortunately that never happened, but I would love to see a strong 5 inch freestyle quad with all the functionality of the DJI FPV drone or the Avata.

So thankful you can “manage expectations.” It would be terrible for you to lose sleep or fall into deep depression over this.

For me, the Avata didn’t feel well in Acro until I put 4-blade HQ props on them. It’s unfortunate that SD card slot is blocked. I’ve broken too many 😢

Right. What a stupid spot for the sd card and usb port, wow.. I couldnt believe it when i first opened up my Avata lol.

Awesome video! Did you try the C157-1, if so how would you compare the 2?

I never did try the C-157-1, just went straight to the -2 with this build.

Anyone thought of converting the avata to a true X frame and upgrade the motors?

Is the micro sd card not accessible after the upgrade? that would really suck if the card become currupted after the upgrade.
@cbedesign

You'd have to remove the prop guards on one side to access the SD card for removal and replacement. Kind of a bummer, but not a ton of work.

At 13:59 in this video you footage goes blurry, I am seeing that after running through gyroflow any ideas whats causing it?
@cbedesign
@cbedesign 10 месяцев назад
So, I've seen that a few times in videos I've shot from a few different drones I have and I've narrowed it down to when I aggressively throttle up and camera mounts that are too hard. At the point in the video you mention, I punched the throttle pretty hard to gain the elevation like that. It introduces a whole bunch of high frequency vibrations into the quad which carries into the camera and the resulting video. These vibrations aren't anything GyroFlow or ReelSteady can get rid of. I think the solution is a combination of tuning the quad and working on the camera mounting to allow it to absorb and not transfer the high frequency vibrations.

I did this exact same build and even cut the wires too like you instead of direct solder to the ESC but everytime I tried to fly in manual I would immediately get an ESC error after about 3 seconds. I'm not sure what I did wrong . Ended up converting it back to stock 🙁 any suggestions

Also I ended up buying the c35 kit and used the avata 3.5 kit motors with it and bought the 03 air unit but I am getting horrible jello. I used the soft black mount pieces for the 03 that came in the c35 kit but not sure if maybe the screws are to tight or if I should only use one instead of both top and bottom screw on each side. I'm completely new to fpv so any help,comment or suggestion would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance 😊

Oh man, sorry to hear that. Having some issue like that was my biggest fear when doing the upgrade. It only happens in manual, that's strange but the power is so much different in manual, I can imagine there is a bigger draw on the ESCs. Other than generic advice like double checking solder joints, I don't know what other trouble shooting steps to give you. Glad to hear you were at least able to get it back to stock succesfully.

@@jessegarcia4224 The C35 I bought has pretty hard Blue mounts for the camera, much harder than the soft silicone mounts I got with my iFlight quads and i have zero jello from the O3 camera in both cases. My guess would be some other issue with the frame - check everything is tight, make sure you're props are in good shape. My second concern would be the motors, the Avata upgrade motors might be too small for the C35.
@jessegarcia4224
@jessegarcia4224 10 месяцев назад
@cbedesign the kit also came with the hard blue camera mounts but I thought I was suppose to use the soft black ones for the 03 and the blue were meant for the caddx vista units. Will try to switch them and see if that makes any difference. And about the motors according to the axisflying page about the specs of the c35 it says it uses c224/ 3500kv for 4s. And the ones in the avata 3.5 kit uses 157-2/ 3750kv. I assumed 3500kv and 3750kv were so similar I could just use those but please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm still learning about all these components that are required. Also I used the mamba MK4 F740 AIO (basic). Since i didn't want to let the avata 3.5 kit "go to waste" that's why i ended up buying the c35 kit. I'm also using the same props for the avata kit for the "c35" kit.

@@cbedesign maybe the solder joints where I cut the wires coming out of the Avata ESC weren't very well connected but i guess I won't find out now lol yeah I'm glad I was able to at least but it back together. I don't fly in manual because I've had many many crashes but not pilot error. Since I'm still learning to fly I would sometimes forget not to make sharp turns and the damn avata would just nose dive. Depending on the height it would recover on it's own or hitting the emergency button but if I was too low I was just SOL. And since I'm in Mexico Dji doesn't offer ANY type of warranty here. Had to pay out of pocket each time to get it fixed. When the axisflying motor upgrade came out I bought them in hopes of eliminating the auto crash bug but since I'm new to soldering I burnt the ESC and had to send it to dji to get it fixed. Then another occasion when the avata nose dived it cracked the lens and had to send it to get it fixed too. So finally when this 3.5 kit came out I had high hopes of eliminating that self crash issue but it didn't work out for me either. I want to fly the avata because if anything goes wrong I feel I can just hit the panic button and it will fly like any other GPS drone. I guess i just gotta lose this fear of flying real fpv drones and just practice more.

Hello, you dont have compare DJI Avata originale (time fly and noise) VS your upgrade Avata (time fly and noise) (All without Gopro). if the motor are more powerfull , and blade more large, it is not more zen motors for the same fly ? not rotate blade quicly , but enough slow rotation for the same fly ? not ?

What is the largest battery you can get on the C35 for longer flight time?
@cbedesign
@cbedesign 10 месяцев назад
That’s a great question. I’m working answering some of that for the 5” and 7” quads I have. I’ll have to do the same testing for the C35. It’s always a balance between the extra weight, the extra HAh, flight time and how the extra weight impacts flight dynamics and handling.

@@cbedesign i just figured out the 1300 will be best that doesn’t make it fly heavier for what i researched. Quick question though. Im new to this so what is the difference between a 1300mAh 6s 35c and same one but with 95c? Thank you 🙏🏼
@cbedesign

@@armando.visuals the C rating as I understand it is how much current the battery can deliver at max load. So a C rating of 100 would handle the stress of a full throttle punch better than a C rating of a lower value. That’s probably worth a google search to validate.
