This theme started on the March 29th 1977 episode… it was a 90-minute special. It was featured as followes: On The Doctors a lost and confused Carolee returns to Hope Memorial Hosptial the very day Ann and Steve are to be married. The role of Carolee Simpson-Aldrich was taken over by Jada Rowland. An amazing episode.
TD 'tested' twice as an hour show - once in 1975 and again in 1977..the 90-minute 'test' was in 1976, during which Althea Davis fell through a plate-glass window trying to help Eleanor Conrad (Lois Smith) hang some drapes..and in July 1977, Ann's doings with Carolee were revealed; shortly thereafter, Ann left town - that time for good....
the only 90-m episode I know TD to have had aired was in 1976 (March 16)..there were two 1-hour episodes: one I 1975 (January 23), the other, from what I understand, a few days b4 the show's 14th anniversary in March '77 (don't know the exact date)........
This 1977 version has a smoother, mellow, more relaxing feel to it. It's more of a laid-back, easy-listening vibe if you will. I love this version than the previous 1971 version.
There is always a time and place for a smaller ensemble arrangement, a full orchestra doesn’t always make a song epic when it could feel more sincere and intimate.
I first heard this on the Labor Day Monday 1977 episode of the show I think for many of the NY based soaps well into the 1980s, the producers made sure the episode of that day ran with enough time for the closing credits to include all of the team making the show.
here's a coincidence: Labor Day was September 5 that year, and I recorded the most I'd heard of this theme on that same day..it ran, without any voice-overs for about 2:22 sec. (another 35s and we would have heard the whole thing!)..this makes the second time I've heard from someone who either heard the same thing I did on the same day or I happened to record the same thing on the same day as someone else..this is gettin' weird!!... LOL......
Oh this gets even wilder. I grew up in Saskatchewan and that Labor Day long weekend, my step father was in a golf tournament in Minot, ND. I took along my Sanyo tape recorder specifically to tape American openings/closings and commercials. We didn't have cable then and as a soap fan, anything involving those soaps was game. I'd never seen any of the US soaps expect Edge, Another World, Search, Somerset.This trip was like finding Mecca!

We surely were familiar with this theme song. And as for me humming it, this is why they do not make soap operas like these anymore. And there were various theme songs from NBC's "The Doctors" as the theme by Score Productions, Inc. including this full 3 minute theme, is heard right here. Thanks for the upload.
All of the remaining four soaps are based in Hollywood, while all the N.Y. based soaps (Secret Storm, Love of Life, The Doctors, Ryan's Hope, All My Children, One Life To Live, Loving and ALL of the Procter & Gamble soaps) were all gone since 2011. Plus the O.J. Simpson Trial (a real-life soap opera) led to dwindling ratings and cancellations to most soaps.
Thanks Dexter Linen, as you are right on about Daytime soaps, only 4 are taped in Hollywood, and not any are recorded in New York anymore. And The Doctors now airs in reruns on Retro TV, thanks for your reply to me and to Danny Hill for the upload to this show's entire theme song.
Erik Pridemore The 4 soaps on now were always based in Hollywood/ Burbank, they never taped here in New York ever in their history from what I can guess. Probably, my guess is the networks were planning on canceling all their original NYC soaps as part of their long term plan to ensure profitability, because NY soaps are very expensive to produce due to enormous labor and union costs in New York compared to California, and all these NYC soaps were no longer profitable because their audiences had dwindled over time. So when these NYC soaps were all cancelled, it unfortunately sparked an trend and question on whether or not soaps would still be around. But as far as the LA soaps are concerned, they’re still standing with no problem whatsoever as it appears.
Thanks LaurenLover81, the only 4 Network TV soaps on the air now are taped in the Los Angeles Studios, as not any are taped in New York City after 2011. Days of Our Lives tapes at The Burbank Studios (formerly NBC Studios in Burbank), General Hospital still tapes at The Prospect Studios in Hollywood (a.k.a. ABC Television Center [West]) and The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless are still recorded at CBS Television City in Hollywood. yes it does, doesn't it? THIS version of The Doctors theme (1977-80) has that smooth, mellow sound. Better than that previous theme, which was orchestral, and makes me think of old romance movies like Gone with the Wind

So wait, this version of the theme was actually heard onscreen? I always thought the mellower version was used on TV while this arrangement was just recorded/released as promo.
yes, it was..i believe it was off and on between 1977 and 1979..and there was a mellower version of this theme that was mixed in with this and the previous, more somber theme..i never heard this version on television in its entirety: i found this somewhere on the internet years ago....
