They still do that. I have only flashes here and there, but I tried to kill myself, I walked around naked everywhere, I remember attacking nurses drs and the whole security team. The security team was super fat and bag short arms, couldn't defend against fast his and kicks. Then they called in this 7.5ft tall guy that picked me up by squishing my arms together until I was restrained by cuffs and shots. Still had the bruises up to months later, fingers. Black finger prints. I got a survey in the mail for that hospital, I first felt like it was a joke. But I still have it somewhere, I will get to it, some day. Every time I sit down, I have flashes come into my head I keep trying to forget. The only thing I can do is pray. I used to visit my mom at an institution when I was young and she did not belong there. I’ll never forget her being surrounded by screaming people and rude staff while she was simply there for depression. They forced her to get shock therapy which changed her forever and we sued the institution and won and the Dr. who was abusive to her lost his license. This was in 1999, I’m sure there are still facilities that treat their patients like monsters but my mom was fired from her teaching position for having depression. I’m glad that at least mental health is less stigmatized now.

It's amazing that not so long ago, something like depression was still treated as a dirty secret. Sometime in the 90's I was put on a very light dose of an anti-depressant to help with what were daily headaches that were getting worse. It did wonders for the headaches, but also seemed to help me with my Seasonal Affective Disorder that I was basically hiding for fear of stigma. Then a few years later, suddenly depression seemed to be socially unacceptable! Everyone was on anti-depressants. I reached a point where I could admit to needing help and have been on a max dose of anti-depressants ever since. I have dysthymic disorder, bouts of major depression and SAD. It's unfortunately a big part of my life I have to live with but it's such a relief not to feel like it's something I have to hide now.

Guys, it’s not fun having mental health issues. Going to a mental facility over and over is not fun. It’s not cute. The screaming was terrifying. The invasion of privacy makes you feel less than human. The staff really doesn’t care about you other than two to three people. I was given so many shots that I really didn’t need so I would be put to sleep that need to be on three different sleep medications on now because I’ve built up a resistance to it. People wanting to fight you for no reason, and you not knowing to be scared or try to attack in return. Violence triggering you into having a mental breakdown. Crying until you’re drooling. People throwing up. Items being destroyed. Staff getting into fights with patients. People coming in with cuts and bruises and scars. I know, it may sound like school but make it mentally unstable. I’ve had so many mental health issues and traumatic events throughout my life, for as long as. I can remember. But nothing, nothing at all comes close to the trauma I experienced during my singular 10 day stay at the adolescent ward of Harding hospital at OSU Wexner Medical Center in May of 2017. I’ve never had worse days in my life and I’ve never been the same person since. You are treated like a lab rat who’s expected to share your deepest thoughts that will then be analyzed by a team of doctors like you’re a math problem. You’ll be handed medications without warning or being told what they are and have your mouth checked to make sure you take them. You’d be stripped down and searched for scars on your body and if you did you had to put giant bandages on them. The day I arrived there the first thing I saw was a boy on medicine for his schizophrenia that made him super hyperactive so everyday, every hour, every minute he paced back and forth the length of the ward while bouncing a small ball and playing music in his headphones not doing anything else or speaking to anyone. The first thing I heard when I got to my bedroom was a girl screaming over not being allowed to call her mom and throwing a tantrum until she was eventually pinned down and taken away by security. We were checked on every 15mins at night until we fell asleep and they would take away things from us if we were staying up too late such as our mp3 player we’d earned through this money system from good behavior and completing activities. We could also earn ice cream and other stuff and omg I’m remembering so many little things I’d blocked out it’s freaking me out. Anyway there was always screaming and sewerslide attempts and a pregnant girl throwing up and slitting her wrists and a 10yr old hanging herself and a screaming homeless man in the ER who just wanted to leave and the dude who made me stand still so he could stare at my chest and the nurse who acted like I was about to hurt her and refused to let me call my mom and the doctor who forced me to stay for 10 days, 5-7 days longer than the average stay, until I wrote my abusive dad a 14 page letter telling him he was the reason I was sewerslidal and then after he read it the doctor sent me home with him

People think this stuff only went on many years ago. I was put in a psychiatric unit 5 years following a break down through losing my best friend and dad in 11 months. I was diagnosed with dysthmia which is basically chronic sadness. Do to the fact that I actually had my full senses I could very clearly see how some poor unfortunates where treated by the staff. Nurses where encouraging people to fight phisically, they mocked how people spoke of acted, they sat and watched one woman actually attempt to strangle an elderly lady, I had to intervene. They took me off medication abruptly that I was supposed to be weaned off, and laughed when I slipped on my own vomit running for the bathroom. They had 12 people with various mental health issues all crammed into one small room. When I asked to be released to a private hospital which my insurances covered they all got around me and threatened me with the padded isolation cell and sedation. When they put me on new medication they gave me the wrong one intentionally and when my family came to see me, I was practicality catatonic. I could go on and on, I left the hospital worse than when I arrived. It was poor torture and I still have bad flashbacks 5 years on.

I wasn't in a position to sue as I was very vulnerable at the time and I had no support, plus I felt I wouldn't be believed as people with mental health issues are never believed.

She had a lobotomy. Very sad. She was likely borderline autistic and didnt regulate her emotions. She used to masturbate in front of people as a young girl and it embarrassed them to the point that they commited her to an institution where she had a lobotomy and spent the rest of her life. Frqnkly these places wernt great but getting rid of them isnt the answer. Now the mentally ill roam the streets of California and big cities throughout the country creating larger social issues. They go in and out of the justice system bevause many times their crimes are minor and as a result of extreme poverty and the system wasnt designed to treat mentally ill people. So they turn em loose. And nobody helps them.

When my child was diagnosed with Autism my mom who had been a nurse in the 80s, was freaking out. Not because he had autism, but because she knew that people in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond in some ways, were placed in institutions just for having autism and locked away. I had to prove to her that the doctors were not trying to do this to my child and that I'd never commit my child to that sort of place. I'm so glad that this sort of place is less common, but I can't fool myself to think that people with cognitive, mental health and learning disabilities are not still being mistreated. I voluntarily went to a mental hospital at the age of 12. Right after being admitted, I was strip searched and my underwear was rifled through. Anything they were trying to find could've been done through a frisk or pat-down. I didn't know if I had the right to refuse, and I feel that in itself is a situation you want to avoid. They also didn't work, as a girl I knew snuck in starbursts in her bra. Also, I would never get rewarded at the end of the day due to never completing my goals. But the doctor would always make me set my goal too high. I would try and make it "one thing I like about myself" or three things, but they always made me bump it up to ten. It only made me feel worse and more like a failure when I couldn't even come up with one. I kept hearing the older girls talk about being uncomfortably touched and talked to by one of the male patients, yet nothing was done about it. One of the male councilors was a little off, too. When one of the girls was in the shower, he ripped the curtain open despite the water running and being told by her roommate that she was in there. One night I woke up to see him standing at the foot of my bed, staring at me. The hospital was also horrible with informing my parents and even got kids wrong. But the thing that bothers me the most was how I was the only non repeat "offender". Everybody else had been to at least one other hospital, and some had even been to the same one more than once. So obviously something isn't working.

When I was 14 I went to an institution for the first time ever, after a suicide attempt. Between ages 14 and 18 I would be committed 14 times to various facilities all over the country, as I was discovered to have personality disorders and psychopathic tendencies. These places are not helpful. They're not beneficial. They're inhumane. In most facilities I went to, patients were treated like inmates in a courtyard. We would be corralled into a main area where everyone would sit around doodling on scratch paper with mini pencils. The only time we would be moved was for groups, meals, and medicine time. The staff at these places really just don't care about the patients. I was treated like I had murdered 65 people...like i was a burden just by being alive. They acted repulsed whenever I tried to approach them with legitimate needs, and they didn't care to remedy those needs, nor anyone else's. I was bunked in a room with a woman who had some severe chest infection going on and nobody cared when I expressed that I wanted to be moved. I was told to get over it. Anybody who had a panic attack or a break would be pinned down and injected, and left in a padded room like a prisoner. Some were wheeled in for electric shock treatment (now called ECT in the state of Georgia) at 6:30 am and we wouldn't see them for days, as they'd basically be in a vegetative slumber all day and night. You just feel like a prisoner, and many people who are in these places really shouldn't be there. They leave worse than they arrived. The doctors on staff are just there to find things wrong with you so they can perpetuate experiments with medicine and milk the insurance companies. I wouldn't wish these facilities on anyone, neurotypical or not. They damaged me permanently.

“Banned for violating patients privacy, despite the man who shot the footage saying he got permission from everyone filmed.” That is actually valid point on violating privacy, because if a person is very neurologically impaired, they can absolutely be exploited by people who later say “what?! they gave us gave permission.” There have been many examples of unscrupulous “care givers” or “friends” to very elderly patients who produce a will after the patients death saying “btw, they were so grateful for my care at the end of their life that they left me everything in their will, See…they signed here when I took them to a lawyer.” I could easily see some of the people filmed here not fully comprehending how many other people would see the film, or that they will have no control over how the footage is used, or that it would fine for them to say no to the nice man with the camera suddenly paying them so much attention - you can’t brush that aside with “I asked them and they said okay.”

Back in the mid 60's, i was a little girl. My aunt had shock treatments, 3 different times. When i became an adult, i was very close to her, she told me of the treatment she received and how terrible the shocking was. We spent a lot of time talking about it. All she really needed was some understanding about the things she had lived. Brutally raped when she was 8. Her mother was full blown crazy, her father was no prize either. When we visited as children (she was married to my mothers brother), she would never allow us to be near her parents if they were there at the same time. She suffered 6 miscarriages before she was able to carry a baby full term. For all she endured , there was no hate in her, only love for everyone. I miss her more than i can express. Your video is fine. Look forward to more of your videos. Thank you.

Having worked in long term mental health institutions, I can say that there are unfortunately many people that live there that are so disturbed, so damaged, so schizophrenic, etc that they cannot function in society. Many strip themselves naked, urinate or defecate on the floor...many constantly hurt themselves or are violent with others. My own nephew is a schizophrenic. He was fine until his late teens when he started to get restless and wander. He was found a few years later wandering naked around a city, because "the voices" told him to. He is now in an institution and complains that God and Angels keep talking to him...and he needs his meds and assistance with living. He won't get that on the street. Very sad, but mental institutions are actually necessary. There should, however, be clean excellent facilities with high standards of care, oversight and documentation.

Worked in a forensic setting 30 years, maximum security Ashworth UK. I use a pseudonym online, this film/experiment was horrific even in it's day, and the antithesis of what we try our best to achieve. We deal daily with the most vulnerable, in the most testing, precarious environments, therefore a harmonious atmosphere is quintessential to patient and staff wellbeing (in that order, if you can't hack it, find new employment). The patients here, are clearly aggravated deliberately, as a sick guise of entertainment. I've had the misfortune to see this uncut, it's harrowing to hardened forensic psychiatry employees. Awful in them days too.

Just because he is speaking and thinking well does not mean that he is like that on the inside or all the time. That doesn't mean that I support this place whatsoever because fuck them. I'm saying that some people who are insane in the head go all through their lives without anyone suspecting a thing. A lot of the time they will end up committing a brutal crime but others dont. Some of the insane are smart enough to hide their thoughts from others. Look up Rodney Alcala for instance.

The documentary was shown in my social psychology class at the U of O, Eugene, in 1981, preceding a discussion about the ethics of showing such a film without the patients' consent. "It is interesting to note that persons are most often pronounced mad by officials destitute of evidence that they are themselves sane." -Ambrose Bierce, The Devil's Dictionary It is political expediency which robs citizens accused of the "crime" of being ill. All other citizens are entitled to a trial by a jury of peers and presumed innocent. A panel of psychiatrists employed by the state is not a fair and impartial jury but one that is biased, with financial conflicts of interest which ought to disqualify them as triers of facts.

As a nurse of 25 years I find it so sad to know so many living with mental issues were abused so horrifically and all excused as treatments. Pain and suffering of a human is in no way a was to treat a mental illness. It's sad to imagine the pain and suffering so many lived with in silence unable to speak of the things they went through. Those with mental illness are so often treated as if they can't feel pain and are locked away and forgotten by family, out of sight out of mind. I've worked with so many patients that have been shunned by family and left to deal with the problems their mental illness brings. So many trying to fix their pain in wrong ways that leafs then into further problems, often with the law and they aren't understood and treated as just a criminal instead of getting the help they desperately need. Think you are doing a great job of bringing the suffering of thousands to the front to bring awareness

He could genuinely be a very productive, and intelligent person who's just a bit slow at learning, but put a person in a place like that, treat them like they're stupid, and beat on their mental state constantly and you'll break anyone down. Regardless of whether or not they have an actual problem.. The fact he realizes clearly what's happening had to of been even more maddening for him, which could of easily made him second guess what they were telling him as true and pushing him into an actual insanity.. Again, which would happen to any human regardless of how stable or sane put in the same situation.

Abuse still happens in inpatient psychiatric facilities. I was in one a few years ago and I had been there quite a few times before so I knew all the nurses. A friend of mine who I had lost touch with was in there. We saw each other and obviously hugged and asked if they were okay, etc. As soon as one of the nurses saw, she put me in the back where difficult patients go (violent, addict, etc. Difficult patient is a term they actually use haha not insulting anyone) and told me that I’m really upsetting my friend because she hates me. I was so confused and hurt and it was a huge big thing. She refused to let me out on to the main floor and then a few days later when I was let out from the back, my friend and I got to speak quickly and apparently the nurse told her the same thing about me - I hate her and I didn’t want to talk to her. The nurse broke confidentiality even though these things weren’t actually said and overall just fucked. But because they’re unionized, she never got fired for it. The whole head manager of psych or maybe even the hospital, came in and interviewed all of us separately. Oh and I was only 16 at the time

Even if they really were mentally ill, this place could only make them reach rock bottom, whats the purpose if not to help them? It was a place for unloved people that had family that didn't care about them, viewed them as a thorn in their side and wanted them out of sight, out of mind. In many cases those same family members were the mentally ill or abusive ones and most likely caused their institutionalized family member to sink into the mental illness that put them there.

@Kreator SATANI'm not saying that he is not, i'm saying that is sad that he is aware of the condition. The fact he understanda whats happening to him so well that makes the situation (in my opinion) way sadder.

The most disturbing movies ever: Dominion (2018), Lucent (2014), Land of hope and glory (2017), Earthlings (2005). They all show only true cases and they are avaiable for free on the internet.

They shut these places down in the UK in the 90's. The patients were released into society to fend for themselves. I've seen half naked people in the supermarket muttering to themselves with 100 tins of beans in the trolly. These places were bad but the alternative wasn't much better.

I was first diagnosed as manic depressive, then as bi-polar being committed by my family multiple times in my teens and in my 20s. This hits home like you can never understand. I was recently rediagnosed with PTSD that was caused by my family. Now I have minimal contact and I feel this is the correct diagnosis. Being around any of them sends me into a tailspin that takes months to get out of.
