The Dodleston Messages: Ghost in the Machine

On Dark Histories, we hear the words of people lost to history, echoing through the writings of labourers, servants, judges, juries, maids and mistresses exactly as they were written in decades and centuries past. This one way communication with history is always limited by it’s very definition and no matter how much we dig, we can never ask the writers what were they feeling as they wrote each line, and whilst we judge them by the information they give, we can never invite them to ask what they make of the people and things of today in our alien, modern world. In 1984, an Economics teacher living in the small rural village of Dodleston found he had the opportunity to do exactly this, when he was thrust into a strange link that tied him across centuries with a past inhabitant of his home via an early model personal computer and it’s word processing software EDWORD. Both accused the other of trickery, poltergeist activity, witchcraft and devilry, but eventually, a bond between the two was formed. Cross-century communications are never easy, however, especially when the future gets involved.

"2109" is made here to sound like representatives of John Keel's "Ultraterrestrials," engaging here in guiding human evolution via Jacque Vallee's "Control Mechanism." Excellent presentation and mystery. We are being moved forward whether we know it or not.

If there are branching timeliness then something needs to make sure events happen on schedule for this reality to stay on it's course and not branch to a separate new reality. In theory that is.

I bought the second edition 2021 of Ken Webster's book The Vertical Plane , after an obscure mention to it on one of the programmes I'd watched two weeks ago, no idea which one it was, but found the book utterly compelling. I have an open mind to many things including this and today popped a link into google from Ken's book and this podcast came up. Its a shortned version of the book, but it remains faithful to the story and, imho, as a precis to the full book. I do believe that the fabric of time and space can and do merge and like two wavy lines maybe they meet then part again during that sort of event. How else can this phenomenon be explained, although that is just my concept of a 'vertical plane'. It just so happens both people Lucas and Ken had a computer or 'comuter' in the case of Lucas and the 'leems' a screen to exchange their words across time of 400+ years. Also, how else can missing persons today be explained away who are never found? Could they have perhaps wandered into a timeslip, a rip in time/space never to be seen again....? Food for thought, methinks! Xx

My family likes the Dr. Who quote: "timey-wimey thing", we use the phrase often. On the other side of the veil there is no time, as NDEers and others can attest. As a scientist, I still think there is much we don't know about the relationship and true nature of space and time, and the supposed limit of the speed of light. It's obvious there is some connection, even to physicists, but we have much yet to learn and it will take a conceptual leap or three to get there. Where's Einstein when you need him? Interesting story, and like many others, perhaps there is a germ of truth there? I also love it just as a story.

Even if one was to remove the word " Time " one still must confirm the passing of the Moment . What shall one label it then ?
@anitapeura3517
@anitapeura3517 2 года назад
@@johnsantos1348 As you imply, we have no word in our language to describe "time" in this sense. Just as what we know of as "gravity" is now understood as not a separate force but something like a consequence of the curvature of space (in more than 3 dimensions), I guess that "time" is similarly a natural consequence of some feature of our space-time that doesn't yet have a physics-based theory to describe it. NDEers describe the sequential passage of events, thoughts etc. so there is some feature of "time" there, but they are near-universal in describing an absence of time as we understand it here. It's more a moment-to-moment thing dependent on attention and intention. Also there is no gravity there though they describe being pulled in one direction or another, some type of attractive force which is not gravity. OBEers describe similar features.

*I'm getting addicted to this Channel. It amazes me how so very precision professional perfect this man is at Story-Telling and Reading. How impeccable his Voice and Diction is, and appealing the Voice + Accent just truly tops off the package.* The man should be as famous as the 1980's Radio Show here in the USA: Garrison Keiler - Prarie Home Companion, set in "Lake Wobegon". A Minnesota based Weekly Radio Show, Story-Telling. It became Nationally Famous and had a mass number of listeners, I would estimate at easily over a half Million. One of the most memorable subjects of the 1980's. If you see this, - Google it and I'm sure there are copies on RU-vid. It is a "genetic trait" I believe, my fondness for Story Telling, *"being the good Irish girl I am"* - and having had been schooled plus university in the South/Dixie, USA. There use to be the best Story Tellers in the South - 2 I recall - One was also a Tennessee State Representative - and with a group of us in Nashville for a State Chamber of Commerence Conference. We had dinner at the Petroleum Club - a Private Urban sort of Country Club - atop one of the buildings downtown. Perfect setting for the group of various Professionals, Mayor, a Judge, City Attorney and this delightful Southern Story Teller. I have never laughed so much and so deep ever - it was the most enjoyable business dinner - dinner period - I've Ever Experienced. Cheers me to recall the night and I still recall 1 of the stories - the man was best - God, I want to laugh like that again! Story Tellers as Priceless! 5 🌟's

We do love to dallie the ladies down here in the deep south and especially during our beautiful moon lit southern nights. Sounds like you like the scandalous politicians nighttime parties that we get to hear all the scandalous details about on Monday morning at the office breakfast meeting. A lot of college girls get help for their needs on campus at those parties from our politicians, mostly state politicians. The federal politicians like to get their female dallingers from across state lines. That way they don't know where they've been or who've they've been with. Someone ought to offer Alex Murdaugh some cash for some of the stories that he could tell about some of those parties. Everyone knows about Epstein and his political ties to parties and the women that attend those parties to be entertained. I'd like to hear some more of your stories to.

Being agnostic and conflicted about anomalous events is natural, have you had one? It has nothing to do with the reader and everything to do with what the writer is going through. One of the core features is beliving (being unable to deny), in some sense what you saw "I know what I saw" , conversely thinking you are going mad. And knowing no one will beleive you, because you know you wouldn't have beleived others. "Please - believe me, look..." You reconcile that through looking to over explain or justify. If you want to write fiction, you have none of that contradiction. You may introduce doubt as a litterary device to make it believable, psychologically, but it will be applied to make the reader reader more convinced of the realism, not less. To accept here is a human reality behind it. The idea that someone who has experiences like this (if they are real) would just write them with a feeling certaintiy, and not go through conflict, or act strangely, is absurd and illogical. Let alone for, him being a "downer" by self doubting your expected narrative.

Why would Lucas leave his book anywhere but the cottage?
@Bambisgf77
@Bambisgf77 2 года назад
The land was being sold, that is the event that ended the communication. Lucas also said the threat of his farm / cottage being burned was real. So if this were true Lucas would have had to trespass into his old cottage ( if it were still standing after new property owner took possession) having traveled from Oxford were the book was supposedly written. Thus making the cottage a very unlikely place to leave the book if it were written at all.

It's a fun modern story, and I'd love to believe it. There's just too much magic involved for it to even be science fiction. And there are few enough people involved for it to be a hoax. A small clique of closely related people with a story kept straight, then Gary who has a story the rest don't need to be able to verify, nor does he need to know one bit of the others' story as a first-hand account. The researching friend as well didn't need to keep any first-hand information straight- and in fact I could see this as a prank on him, taken WAY too far. "Hey, ye olde english nerd, how do you like this that magically showed up on the computer?" Followed up with, "oh fuck, he thinks it's real, where do I take it now?" and then "dammit, he's actually following the leads, now I need a way to retcon this." The buddy keeps pushing further investigations, Ken keeps trying to find an offramp, next thing you know he's got a book about what a jackass he is to his friends. 2109 was simultaneously necessary to the story, and the point at which the story went off the rails. Why would a group of tachyon beings who have always existed connect 1521 to 1985? And why do they associate themselves with 2109 when human time scales have no meaning to them? Why do they manifest themselves to one end of the connection but leave the other end to a degree of chance? Ken and Debbie were selected for some great purpose- as much as it is comforting that the mundane task of communication in the great web of human computers is itself a great purpose, one must imagine that tachyon beings would be thinking of something much, much bigger. They theoretically already retconned human history from two points, so one might suppose that the purpose would be to continue to continue to connect humanity not just across space, but across time. That either hasn't happened, or we're living in a kind of "lathe of heaven" universe in which the world is made new daily as world leaders coordinate across history trying to find the perfect path to create more generations of humanity. So the beauty of this (likely) hoax is that its (probable) falsehoods invite imagination and reflection well beyond the source material. I'm reminded of "Alien Autopsy". Hilarious and well crafted movie about the footage that wound up on Fox in the 90s. That might make a fun episode here.

The bit that confused me, unless I misheard it, is that Lucas claimed to be from a University that hadn't yet been formed but then it's discovered he's from even earlier than he first claimed. So even if Lucas is trying to put them off the trail to his real name, how does that make sense? 2109 told him to use false info from the future? But yeah, the 2109 thing was a reach too far. It was a cool story until that shark jump.

@@maxwellschmidt235 I feel like a better writer could have made that idea into something good had it been intentional. Say Lucas had been testing them with some false info and they'd been able to piece together the truth from clues in the early writing. Instead it just reeks of shoddy retconning. Every time someone finds a hole he adjusts the character. Over all it's a good story at first but falls apart after a while.
@maxwellschmidt235
@maxwellschmidt235 5 лет назад
@@Altitudes kind of the same with 2109. There are ways to have a 2109 character, but they need to be consistent. They supposedly appear to lucas to give him some foreshadowing and give him a 1980s computer to conduct the communication. Meanwhile, Ken just happens to bring home a computer from the school which communicates with the past. Why was one told but not the other? Why was 1980s technology used for both ends of communication? Lucas was given something he saw as witchcraft, why not give both sides extremely advanced tech? Why be friendly in one communication, threatening in another? It could be a great historical sci fi

"2109 was simultaneously necessary to the story, and the point at which the story went off the rails. Why would a group of tachyon beings who have always existed connect 1521 to 1985? " Imagine it was a telephone call in a contact line between 1985 and the 16th, and 2109 breaks in: "HOW YALL DOIN?! We've got some Tachy-Ons for ya!"

An excellent podcast with an interesting story. Obviously I'm inclined to be skeptical of the events truthfulness. For one, the communication as a whole was obviously 2109's doing. Did either Lucas or Ken ever bother asking 2109 why they were doing it in the first place. Also the poltergeist activity Lucas and Ken were having was again obviously (to my understanding anyway) 2109's doing. Why wasn't 2109 confronted with it and asked why that was happening? Yes these were strange happenings, but the progression of their actions doesn't seem logical.
@stellaanderson7246
@stellaanderson7246 2 года назад
It all seems so obviously improvised, doesn't it? First it's a ghost story with poltergeist activity and a creepy poem, then the tone shifts and it's a time travel story (a popular theme in early 80s media) where they're talking to someone who lived there 400 years ago, only the details can be researched and they don't check out. So the story gets retconned to explain some of the inaccuracies and 2109 gets introduced. 2109 is a futuristic entity who conveniently can't be fact checked and is responsible for setting up the communication channel, for reasons that are apparently very important but are never explained. You'd think anyone in this position would try to get 2109 to explain, but they don't.
@SciFiGrinch
@SciFiGrinch 2 года назад
@@stellaanderson7246 Yeah I agree. Maybe if Ken hadn't written a book about it and just wrote an article on it for a magazine or something similar it might be a bit more believable. But the obvious cash grab just makes a dubious story that much more suspicious. Also 2109's actions were very strange. If you had the ability to communicate and interact with the past for some important reason would you not send the message and end it there. No they carried on for some odd reason. Like the threat of inflating the paradox they already created (in the communication alone) didn't exist.
@stellaanderson7246
@stellaanderson7246 2 года назад
@@SciFiGrinch exactly. Even if you're prepared to believe cross-temporal communication might be possible, the only way for the events here to make sense is if it was a hoax, and Ken has a pretty clear motive. Maybe it started as a joke, but it clearly turned into an attention seeking cash grab. 2109 just doesn't make any sense at all except as a poorly thought out addition tacked onto the hoax.
@SciFiGrinch
@SciFiGrinch 2 года назад
@@stellaanderson7246 Yeah, the irony is that it's not a bad story. Certainly one that would have made for a decent sci-fi novel, especially in the 80's. 2109 would have even added to the plot if he wrote it that way. So if this was a cash grab Ken did it wrong. If it was true (it wasn't) what was accomplished? Lucas lost his farm. Ken got a book out of it and some $. Heaven knows what 2109 got from it but seemingly nothing they couldn't have gotten in other ways. I guess that's part of the point of a hoax, keeping us bewildered.
@stellaanderson7246
@stellaanderson7246 2 года назад
@@SciFiGrinch it is a good story and it would have made a good novel or ARG, which I guess it kind of was. To me, the historical inaccuracies, terrible "old timey" grammar, and the fact that 2109's actions and motivations don't make sense indicate Ken didn't have his story worked out ahead of time and was making it up as he went along, probably because he started horsing around one day and just ran with it. If he'd planned and researched ahead of time it would have been a truly great story.

From Wikipedia: There was a paper mill in Switzerland by 1432 and the first mill in England was set up by John Tate around 1490 near Hertford,[70][71] but the first commercially successful paper mill in Britain did not occur before 1588 when John Spilman set up a mill near Dartford in Kent.[72] During this time, paper making spread to Austria by 1469,[73] to Poland by 1491, to Russia by 1576, to the Netherlands by 1586, to Denmark by 1596, and to Sweden by 1612.[33]
