Andy Tidy starts his "Lockdown Legacy" series of Canal Hunter videos as he explores the lost line of the 5.5 mile Donnington Wood Canal, which connected Earl Gower's collieries at Wrockwardine Wood with his limestone quarry at Lilleshall and to the outside market at Pave Lane.
This was an early tub boat canal with striking similarities to the Duke of Bridgewater's more famous canal near Manchester, and introduces the use of inclined planes to the British canal scene.

Great vid Andy, the info you manage to get hold of is so informative. I never knew this existed. I got one for you though, I heard a long time ago that the coalfields near Arbury Hall near Nuneaton were joined to the Coventry canal. Do you think you may be able to look into it one day? Of course, we've all got to wait till we can go out and about again.

Hi Graham - That little network would be a fascinating one to explore / unpick - also the associated Griff arm off the Coventry Canal. Good shout and local too. I wont forget that idea.......... Thanks

Thank you. I've just discovered 'side by side' websites and got into the maze of the Telford area coal mines and canals as I used to lurk about the Granville nature reserve in between (van driving) jobs and was curious to know the extent of it. It's nice to see from the aerial view there are lines and sweeqing curves of greenery even amongst the new factories of the Hortonwood Industrial Estate although Trench Lock has been obliterated by a traffic island.

Andy, love your entire series. Just a couple of errors:- 1. The remains of the blast furnaces are in fact the old stables/ gunpowder store for the mines. It would appear that before the Old Lodge area was developed the horses (of which there must have been many) were grazed in this area. 2. The pumping house is in fact the Winding House for the Muxton Bridge mines. ThePumping House is a few yards down the canal towards Lilleshall.

Hi nice video. Have you run across a canal near red lake? I grew up in that area and as a boy we played in the remains of a Canal, some of it still had water in it back then. Most of it was destroyed when they changed all the roads around in the 70’s. But I think there is a bit of it left in the coppice of woods at the top of red lake. I would love to know more about this and what it was used for. Thanks Andrew

I think thats the Ketley Branch which linked the minerals at Oakengates to William Reynolds ironworks at the foot of the Ketley Inclined plane.
@keanestar07
@keanestar07 4 года назад
There was an incline plane by the Blue pig pub in Trench and there was a canal lock at where the Trench Lock juction is. around Hortonwood there's still remains of the canal

There are quite a lot of photos of Trench incline because it was the last operational structure in the UK - and will feature in two weeks time. In next weeks episode I build a model of the Ketley Incline which was essentially the same as Trench.

@@lifeat2.3milesanhour57 Also there was a canal that went past the old mill at Wrockwardine Wood

@@keanestar07 Thats the end of what was the Wombridge Canal which was later sold to the Shropshire Canal Co to join the Donnington Wood to Shrewsbury via Tranch Incline. Its a fascinating and under rated area.

Once again Andy, many thanks. Looking forward to you climbing through the the moored boaters to reach the Coventry! The Plough awaits (if open... ). Would you consider a unit on the Lapal Canal? I've not seen anything with narrative included. Apologies if you've done something already, but if so, I couldn't find it. 🤓🇨🇦

I often drive my truck through Telford, and am always on the look out for evidence of the old cuts. Sadly, there is very little evidence that they ever existed from my view from the cab!

They are really indistinct fingerprints from the road Alan. You have to know where to look and then get out on foot. One of the traces I like best is at the bottom end of Wonderland, where a concrete dinosaur stands in the trough of the canal bed.

If you turn right at Trench on A518 at speed camera you will have crossed the old cut after the railway bridge where theres now a built up mound of grass as of 2019's last Highways road cock up. Continues along right side A518, woodland turning in to horse grazing. Can see the green vent at is passes Horton Wood to MOD Donnington where it disappears. If turn left at Trench Lock, theres still water behind Rontec leading past GKN, RBSL called Shropshire Union Canal.

The best source are the side by side maps on the National Library of scotland website. I used the paper alternatives of the old OS maps produced at the Godfrey Editions.
