The Donut-Shaped Soviet Building in Central Moscow 🇷🇺

We all know the extent to which Soviet architecture can be brutalist. Concrete monoliyths with exposed cement exterior, commie blocks, and what not. This building in Russia is up there nominated as the most SOVIET BUILDING OF ALL TIME.
Bublik Circular Building. There's actually two of them. Would you live in one of them? Join me as I travel to Moscow and go for a tour of the most insane pieces of architecture that are considered to be part of the brutalism trend.
From Wikipedia: the Round Houses in Moscow are nine-floors residential buildings built circularly, in Western Moscow in 1970, according to a project by architect Yevgeny Stamo and engineer Aleksandr Markelov.
They were built in a very different design from the regular “panel block” houses of that era, and in this video you can DEFINITELY SEE WHY! The diameter of the structure is 155 meters, with 26 entrances, 913 apartments and six big archways to enter the courtyard. The first floor of the building has pharmacies, shops, hair salons, a laundry and tailor shop, also a childrens’ club, and even a library. You can see them in the video! The isolated courtyard has its own park, with playgrounds for kids and feels like it is a long way away from the busy town. The rooms here are not rectangular but more like trapezoids, which makes it harder to place furniture.
This place is just mindboggling. The closest metro stop is Minskaya, which denotes actually a pretty well-off area of Moscow, where wealthy people are known to live. It is not a bad area by any means. Many embassy buildings are also located not far from Bublik.
Tell me the truth and be honest: would you like to live in a place like this? It definitely looks like one of those buildings that popular travel vlog personalities such as BALD AND BANKRUPT or HARALD BALDR would love to see. It's not far from central Moscow: so keep in mind next time you'd like to visit Russia! It's quite the unusual tourist attraction, but if you're interested...well, you know where to find it. Bublik Circular House.
Also, fun fact: "bublik" in Russian means donut! It is not its official name, but rather a nickname.
Continuing from Wikipedia: two architetst Stamo and Markelov wanted to design their own housing project to diversify a bit from the dull typical Soviet planned architecture. DID THEY SUCCEED IN THEIR PLANS? Ahah, let me know in the comments.
Weirdly enough, the main communist architectural authority and the Moscow Mosproject-1 institute let them step out from the standard solutions and make a round building. GREAT IDEA! In 1972, the construction of the first huge accommodation building was completed. It made a big impression on the people of Moscow and of all the USSR, and for a long time there was an urban legend that the houses were built for the Moscow Olympics and that a whole block of such buildings was designed in the shape of the Olympic rings.
The costs increased due to the need for constant monitoring of a single project, in addition, such houses required monolithic additions, which increased the cost of the construction and the duration of its construction. The real idea of the project was to try to restore the "old Soviet residential yard", to add attractiveness to the typical built-up areas and to provide the residents the necessary infrastructures within walking distance. Thus, the first floor of the building was reserved for facilities such as shops, pharmacies and a library.
The building in Nzhinskaya Street contains 913 apartments on 26 entrances. The other on Dovzhenko Street is a similar copy and only the number of apartments is different - 926. Due to its location near the Mosfilm Studios, the Houses has often appeared in Soviet films.
After a few years, the disadvantages of this form of building became apparent: a strong wind was constantly blowing inside the yard, there were very loud voices and a significant portion of the apartments did not meet the required insulation standards. Repairs in the apartments are difficult to make due to the trapezoidal shape of the rooms and often residents and guests have difficulty finding the right entrances.
As a result, after the construction of the house on Dovzhenko Street was completed, no such buildings were built.
Former Moscow Chief Architect Mikhail Posokhin praised Yevgeny Stamo's contribution to the urban landscape and posed him alongside with architects such as Vasily Bazhanov and Alexei Shchosev who also contributed to Moscow's urban landscape.

The building is actually quite beautiful, especially considering the vegetation and small park in the middle. Imagine raising ur family there and hanging out in the park in the center, it would be a pretty chill life.

About the problems you listed: on the contrary, the Soviet residential areas were designed to calm the wind inside the courtyards. A strong wind can only be found in the arches, but you only spend a few seconds there when you enter the courtyard. There is a mistake in English wiki, check Russian one. The rooms are not rectangular, but trapezoidal, the angles are not 90° but 84° or 96°. This makes renovation and decoration a little more difficult, but does not affect daily life. The only problem might be the echo in an enclosed yard. If your windows face into the courtyard, it can be noisy.

No, they all have stolen every 360° sunlights building architecture designs concepts from me! I am the one who initiated / invented that! I am german-russian / sovyet-russian-german, half blond european german, half darkhaired sovyet russian! "I ofc see, that you have stolen those "transparent", "opened" and "360° sun-lights" building architectures concepts designs and "360° - Surround / Volume Room pictures, sounds, videos and its editing / tweaking" from me! You have to understand that they can falsify everything that you hear and see on TV, the Internet, in pictures, videos, sounds and in real life! But what you don't get, you also throw away the chance / opportunity / possiblity to reach other planets, to live on other planets, new futuristic technologies, better health, rejuvenation, eternal youth and immortality! You / We all die into the empty the nothingness sooner than u think. Watch news, you will see the deadly accidents, fires, storms and floods. Only I could change that!" "(WIP - Work in Progress) There are (my) simple building rules that the state should enforce: - Do not build something large (a building) neither on nor near a hill, rock / mountain! - Location / Spot of Death! One heavy storm or earthquake and it's gone (Landslide, Avalanche)! *Unless it is used for science (examples: telescope, weather station)! - Don't build wooden buildings! Because this leads to: mold formation, diseases, fires, etc. . - No Electronic in pools (except filter-system ofc), because water+electricty can and will be deadly! - No stairs inside, because it takes too much space off, is hard to step and clean at age. + It's better to build the stairs outside. *Unless you're a multimillionaire or billionaire, you can have stairs built inside and out. + And a transparent glas elevator / lift inside (maybe a half-opened one)! + Underfloor-Heating everywhere (not by gas!)! - No gas! Because that can and will end deadly somehow somewhen whenever anytime! - Don't build garage too close (inside, under) the house, except your vehicles are driven by Solar, Water, Electricty. + In plan-building always take attention to 360° sunlight! + Built Solar-panels! + Built buildings with a maximum high of 1-2 etages / floors! - Don't built buildings higher than 1-2 etages / floors! Except in hot desert areas like Dubai etc., there you can build buildings with 1-3 floors, because of the hot sunlight, the shadows cool the buildings down, pay attention to a maximum of 3 etages / floors! Building and living a balanced less accidentally life is that logical, rational and simple." Partly gladly, partly resentment. Because what none of them deliberately failed to mention, is, that they copied the >open and transparent< concepts of >360° sunlight< from me, which can be read in my building rules published / shared, written years ago. I am the one who initiated such >new< >open and transparent< building styles for >360° sunlight

Ton of trees in and around these buildings - now that's a great feature. I've lived in too many countries (in asia) where buildings is all you get, combined with a crapload of air pollution. Barely any trees. Aside from that, the whole idea behind this building design is quite neat - there is an area for the kids to play and it's easy to monitor kids by the parents.

Interesting!!!! If this was set up for agriculture in the middle for the community it would be awesome! A clear dome to cover the center especially for winter seasons and there you have it! A self sufficient community including a well spring of course! I like private living but if need be community for survival would work! Shops on the ground levels, even livestock in sections. Enclosed environment! Interesting start!

I like the idea very much. 100 people would be max. An Octagon or Hexagon would solve some of those problems. I like it round though, probably the rooms just need to be bigger. Like I said, less people. Apple trees in the middle.

Honestly I can think of far more dystopian things in nowdays West, like UNAFFORDABLE HOUSING! People need to stop to throw shit at the Soviet Union, because our standards of living in the West were obtained only thanks to the Russian Revolution and the Cold War.
