I would refrain from Michael Mcdonald era at first. Let them explore the earky material further then work their way up. Then they will have a better understanding and apprection because it's vasrjy different I say suggest 1 song only . Perhaps " Listen to the Music" would be my next choice.
@@jgsrhythm100 Michael McDonald did exceptional tunes with the Doobs. "Real Love," "Open Your Eyes," and "You Never Change" are outstanding. "Another Park, Another Sunday" is a classic Doobs sleeper and "Chinatown," not to be confused with "China Grove," is a Doobies keeper...
"Black Water" by the Doobies is what country music should have become. Smooth, melancholy, and comforting down-home feel. (Modern country is like nails on a chalkboard, IMO)
If you want to see and hear something cool, there's a cover band from Georgia called Foxes and Fossils. It was founded by a gentleman named Tim Purcell, with his daughter as one of the singers. They play small venues, but their musicianship is fantastic. They did a GREAT cover of Black Water and even had the audience doing parts in the catchy mid-chorus. Check it out, you won't be disappointed. They also did the best cover I've heard of Rolling in The Deep and did a very good cover of Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.
One of the best and cohesive bands in the early to late 1970’s. After Tom departed for health and personal reasons Michael McDonald took the lead and changed the style to more rhythm and blues!Much later Tom rejoined the band and I was able to see them live with Chicago at Jones Beach Theater They were still awesome and Tom sounded fantastic!Theater
Off possibly the best overall album of all time….” The Captain and Me”.It is right up there with Boston’s debut album in my opinion.50 years ago, people. Playing real music.
You Blew my mind #1 Doobies were group I saw 1st time in Concert ...1974 ( I'm 64 seen 57 bands in concert LOTS more than once && Met a Lot) & Last Concert I saw before COVID was them opening for Santana...&& #2 talking about Baseball cards My Dad (RIP) collected them He had Great ones..His Fav a Mickey Mantle Rookie card....I have it & will never sell it !! It's in a locked bank box with the rest of his baseball cards & a pair of Colt 45's His Great Grand Dad got working for the Railroad in the 1860's in Wyoming.... LOVE IT !!
This is about a real place (small town) in Texas, (China Grove) with lots of gossip like any small town, as the lyrics point out. This song just grabs you from the start.
Definitely taking it to the streets preferably live from their farewell tour.... Michael plays a song at the end that's very entertaining....that whole show is incredible!!! They also sound phenomenal live😁
Doobies are the best. Great songs, musicianship, backing vocals. The whole package! Their recent album of last year was wonderful as well. So many marvelous tunes in their catalog.
"Need a Little Taste of Love" great example of the Doobies transitioning back to their "China Grove" roots from the Michael McDonald "yacht rock" period
I grew up between a place called Eagle Rock and Lizard Lick in N.C. When I was a teenager, there were a lot of quarters spent in jukeboxes on this song. Still one of my favorite all time bands. They're first five albums are flawless.
I’ll always remember being a summer camp counselor and on a time off a bunch of us went on a hike up a mountain close to the camp. When we got to the vantage point we sat and admired nature when someone pulled out a joint, we all smoked while singing Blackwater. Then we had to figure out how to get down the mountain while being high. It was all ok, fun, laughing and singing.
I can't look at that album cover anymore without thinking that any minute now, Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves will come flying off that unfinished overpass in a fucking bus!
Watching you guys do a great job for a few years now and I love the way you read the bio on the artist/album at the start of every song . Not only does it show effort on your part but I'm tired of watching the younger Reactors playing an artist they have NO IDEA in the world who they are, what they play ,name of an album etc. keep it up . Peace and Love
It's their best known song and, for me, their best tune. A great little rocker, short and sharp, with an easily memorable clean and dirty guitar riff, from start to finish. Black Water is the Doobies' most interesting song with amazing vocals and harmonies. P.S. Guys, as far as interesting-sounding town/city names, I currently live in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, just west of Toronto. The origin of the city name Mississauga is Native Canadian. The City of Mississauga, Canada’s sixth largest municipality, is located on the Traditional Territory and Treaty Lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit (River) First Nation. It is most likely that Mississauga is an Ojibwa word meaning ‘river of many mouths’. (Source: City of Mississauga website). Peace out.
Michael McDonald joined the band when Tommy Johnston left the band. That change in vocals created a total change in style more bluesy jazzy with Michael McDonald took me a while to get used to, but I absolutely love it.
@@Terri.46 I took no disrespect from it and doubt Michael McDonald would have the either. I do love early Doobie Brothers, but as I said before, it took me a while to get used to the total change in directions that the Doobie Brothers took when Michael McDonald join the band. He brought in some of his experience with steely Dan and some of the other wonderful musicians he played with. Kind of expanded our horizons. Just like the Eagles when some of the members left the band, and Joe Walsh joined.
The driving guitar rythyms are one of their trademarks. The song Long Train Running was originally just an intro jam at concerts the fans were so crazy about it they decided to put lyrics to it.
Jesus Is Just Alright, is Fire! Black Water, Listen to the Music, Long Train Running are all great! The Doobies are in my opinion one of the best bands of the 70s.
What a trip, I went to elementary school in San Jose, from around 75 to 80, the "broken" freeway ramp on the album art, is the unfinished MacArthur Maze system being built at the time, My dad and I were on a greyhound trip from Oklahoma city back to San Jo, and when I woke up and saw the MacArthur , I said loudly "Dad, were home!" All the adults collectively said AWWWWWW🥰 I was around 8, and will never forget it.
The cover of album shows the band dressed in old time costumes on the I-5 / SR 14 freeway bridge that came down during the So Cal earthquake of Feb. 9, 1971.
@@lisemzarate4029 I remember that overpass when I drove to LA from the Central Valley many times and that it was destroyed in the earthquake. (Yes, I am that old!) So when the album came out, I recognized it right away.
@@fionapomme I wa born in 71, my mom remarried when I was 2 and we moved from Martinez to San Jo in 74 or 75, lived there until 81, we did alot of traveling between the Bay, Napa and Fort Brag, Walnut Creek, Los Altos, so I always knew where we were based on what freeway we were using, but The Altamont between Fremont and Livermore was my favorite highway 🥰
Their 1st album went no where. Their 2nd album included the hit single Listen To The Music & they were off & running, With the release of The Captain & Me, they were really beginning to hit their stride & great stuff was on the horizon.
I live about 8 miles away from China Grove. It's really San Antonio. There are small "towns" that surround every major city, but China Grove is a tiny yet pretty spread out little creche just east (as song says) of San Anton known for dusty dives and southern/barbeque joints. It's the sister town of St. Hedwig, that has a world renown BBQ place called "Texas Pride". Great food. China Grove has a population of 1200 people in its 5 square miles.
Jeff "Skunk" Baxter!!! Played with them, Steely Dan and a host of other studio work. The rest of the band wasn't chopped liver, either, from a fantastic album.
My favorite band! I think you guys would dig some of their tunes that got little to none air play...The Captain and me, Daughters of the Sea, Clear as the Driven Snow....so many more.
Love this song! I heard a lot growing up... Played a lot on the radio. "A Little Bit Country/A Little Bit Rock and Roll" was a Donny and Marie song (originally). That is one thing so great about 70's music = they were actual bands that could play music and sing! Doobie Brothers have plenty great songs!
Yep. My Mom had the album The Greatest Hits of the Doobie Brothers (or some such similar name. Edit: "Best of the Doobies"), and I played that thing over and over in the early 80's, and there's not a bad song on it.
That "I'm a little bit country, I'm a little rock n roll" bit isn't South Park. They are making fun of the old Donny and Marie TV show from the 70s. They had a segment of the show that they would do a country/rock "duel" every week. It was really cheezy. :)
Did you ever see the movie "Fields of Dreams"? When Ray Kinsella is returning to his Iowa farm with Terence Mann, this song is played as he is driving his VW van.
Martin Ellis I turned 77 in September of this year, and was in my late 20s in 1973 when this song was released. Aging is inevitable ( provided you live long enough ). Getting 'old' is an option. Attitude is everything.
You should react to the Doobie Brothers' killer No. 1 pop hit "Black Water" (studio version) with Patrick Simmons on lead vocals next and then check out "Takin'' It to the Streets" with Michael McDonald on lead vocals. Tom Johnston sang lead on "China Grove" and also sings lead on "Listen to the Music."
HEy guys ,take a trip down this rabbit hole ,Kevin Osula the beat boxer from Pentatonix.his solo stuff is mind boggling. also THE Best female singer in Asia, Morisette Amon. do it and grow in amazement
Great guys, Susan St James favorite band. She would follow them on tour, hang as celebrity mega-fan . She was really a big item back in the 70's. ,on TV with Rock Hudson on McMillan and wife.
Such a great song, big big hit on the radio. Kind of reminds me of something Elton John would put on his Yellow Brick Road album. The piano playing is very Elton and even the vocals. Great reaction y'all! Sorry, only from Columbus, Ohio and there's a bunch of Columbuses.
Great album and the Doobies best. Your best reaction in my opinion is still Al Stewart and year of the cat and have watched it many times. Happy Christmas and happy new year guys.
