3:55 This right here!! Music...... We are ALL human beings, related in the Spirit!! Music speaks to the spirit! It reveals the invisible beauty that is constantly surrounding us and is also an integral part of each one of us
1979. I was 19, living and working at a ski resort. I worked nights. This Album was on my turntable. I put it on every evening when I got up for work. The first song I always played was Minute by Minute. I went skiing every day, every morning after work. Good Memories for an old hippie ✌🇨🇦🏒🎶🎷🎸
There's an excellent live version of It Keeps You Running from 1977 on RU-vid...He was only 25 years old then but he already had that voice... I've been in love for about 45 years now...😍
This song only gets better with age. And if you take some time to understand the lyrics it takes on a new dimension that will reveal its true genius. I can’t think of another song that so effectively tugs your emotions so powerfully in two opposing directions. From one bar to the next… one line to the next… even simultaneously, it is upbeat, hopeful, inspirational, and then completely emotionally devastating. It leaves it to the listener to decide. It is a musical masterpiece masquerading as a pop song.
You had it right. The lead vocalist singing in this song is the one and only legend Michael McDonald, the one in the center (also check out his song "I Keep Forgetting").
I am almost 69 and I had the 8 track tape of this I used to play in my 1974 Volkswagon Super Beetle. I also saw this group on concert in Fredericton Canada in 1977. I had so so much fun watching you react to this bro. Thank you!
“Everytime you’re near me every time I see your smile … knowing you can only stay awhile…I keep forgetting we’re not in love anymore, I keep forgetting things will never be the same again” is a good line too he sings love lost songs and even the patti song “on my own this; wasnt how it was supposed to be”
Every damn song by the Doobie Brothers is absolute magic! Listen, I’m 53 years grew up listening to the Doobie Brothers. My mother was a huge fan so they were played a lot in our home! Growing up Saturday morning cleaning the apartment my mother would be jamming to the Doobie Brothers. This band brings me great memories! Not to mention how fucking awesome they are!
It's a great line, though I am fairly sure you've slightly misrepresented it. I can't look it up right now (don't want to stop the video!), but this is what I think he sings: "What a fool believes he sees No wise man has the power to reason away." Better, no?
@@TheoZoffrok The line is "What a fool believes, THE wise man has the power to reason away." Think about it (or just Google it lol) the line before says: "As she rises to her apology ANYBODY else would surely know..." How could "NO wise man" be able to reason away what "anybody else" would surely know? The line is contrasting a fool, and a wise man.
@@thomaspaine7107 I could not disagree more. First of all, as far as google is concerned, yes, the first search result brings up the version you claim; however, the next 3 or 4 all give the version I believe to be correct. As to your interpretation, again, I quite disagree: *surely* the message is if a fool really wants to believe something, no one, no matter how wise, can disabuse them. I honestly think this makes far more sense. This is from one of the lyric websites: Punctuation is important here. The key phrases are "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away" and "What seems to be is always better than nothing." Translated, that means, "There's no point trying to reason with a deluded fool. He sees what he wants to see, and you'll never convince him that he's wrong. But hey, maybe he's HAPPIER with his delusion. For a lonely fool, a fantasy love may be better than no love at all."
@@TheoZoffrok I agree that the way you have described the scene is the only way to understand the line as you do. The lyric you, and I are discussing is a maxim, and it is summing up the line immediately preceding it. This lyric is not describing an actual discussion between a fool, and a wise man. Both the fool, and the wise man are hypothetical in this line. For the record, I don't think that referring to the subsequent lyric (What seems to be...) aids your argument in any way. That line does sum up the mindset of the fool though. We agree on that. Many people interpret the lyrics like yourself, and I am not frustrated by that. I am curious if a live version of the song would help us determine the original intent of the songwriter?
I remember driving with my granny in FL Just cranking it & we be sanging Great days I miss so much And yes good music does bring ppl together Not so much today's music
You are correct that there are a lot of people out there who want to keep us divided. I refuse to be part of that! I listen to classic rock all the time so it is not uncommon for me to hear this song on a regular basis. We gotta keep the good music a live🥰
You are so right.. I’m 66, this song came out in my early 20s, it was and is one of my favorites. I love seeing the younger generations discover the music of my youth!
Welcome to the beautiful world of Michael McDonald. His voice sounds so familiar because I guarantee you've heard it before. It's in 20% of songs as either singing or backup singing. Obvious exaggeration, but he partnered with a lot of people in their songs too.
If you like Michael, you might want to listen to his duet with Patti Labelle. "On My Own" is a bit slower, but hi-lites both their excellent talents. And I liked Doobie Bros both before and with him. And his eyes ... wow! (SORRY. Its a girlie thang. 😄) The Doobies ... China Grove, Blackwater ... rabbit hole! U pik we listen. Luv ya, dude 🎶💓👀
I think Michael McDonald was and is a legend, smooth as hell! His voice is just as good live also! Michael is the one in the middle with the beard. He is so soulful!🙏🙏🙏😇😇😇
yes i agree it is good to go back and go over the memories. i am a definite senior citizen now and started really listening to music in the late 50's amd was totally hooked through the years. so i sppreciate you looking these up and reacting for us.
This devastating song becomes real to life when one fully digests the storyline expressed in the haunting lyrics. We have all known a fool or three who adjust reality by adding sufficient sugar so bitter pills can be masked as candy when necessary. But those with no skin in the game see the obvious in a instant. Grammy Song of the Year 1980 and well worthy of the honor.
So, this is my all time favorite Doobie Bros song...and they have a lot of great ones. I am from the Bay Area and saw them at Fillmore West when they first started out. Fifteen years later I see them in a huge concert and their live version of this became indelible in my memory. This is about the tenth reaction video to this song and it never fails to get content creators moving and smiling.
What a fool Believes became not only a huge hit single but an influential one. You can hear its rhythmic synth in songs like He's So Shy by The Pointer Sisters or Steal Away by Robbie Dupree
My wheelhouse now; Yacht Rock!!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️Love this song!!! Michael Macdonald was the lead singer on this; the Doobie Brothers have two eras; pre-Michael when they “rocked” and post-Michael where they had a more soulful sound; I love both, but Michael MacDonald is my man!!!!🔥
Hello Van…. That’s Michael McDonald. Yes the one in the middle is the vocalist. He was not an original member. That voice actually changed the sound of band. I like the older stuff. Black Water is my favorite. If you can find it on You Tube, the remaining band members did a pandemic ZOOM version of Black Water. So amazing! I love watching you enjoy my music. Oh I just found it…. The Doobie Brothers have their own You Tube channel. The video is there.
I was born in 76' and the Micheal McDonald era of the Doobie Brothers is some of the first music I heard and can remember coming on the radio. I've always loved it but it makes me smile that younger people like it too. "The wise man has the power. . ."
The lead singer is Michael McDonald, the one in the middle, who's surrounded by the other guys. Michael has an awesome voice. He's been around for many many years. Seen these guys, in concert, and met them a few times. They are so personable and humble! Their sound and style of music is so Classic. The black guy is Tiran Porter. The Doobie Brothers are Legend and Timeless!
I was introduced to Doobie Brothers music by my brother he was 3 years older than me. He come home on leave from the Army and brought me one of their LP albums and I was never the same again! Lol
I was born in 68' and my father had a good ear for great music! I kept a lot of his old albums when he passed. I have this and many more great bands on vinyl. I do listen to them and share them with my son every chance I get! "I keep forgetting" is another good song by Michael McDonald. Thanks for keeping great music alive by playing and reacting to them..... keep up the good work!!!
I saw the Doobie Brothers in concert in the Summer of 2021 and they still are CRUSHING it in their 60s and 70s! The Doobies do R&B (Minute By Minute, One Step Closer), rock (China Grove, Long Train Running), Country/Folk (Old Black Water, Listen To The Music) and even Gospel (Jesus Is Just Alright, Taking It To The Streets). Please react to more hits form this legendary band!
I have always Believed that Music is the great equalizer.. it know no boundaries.. it will reach you always.. it will hit your heart .. I will make you feel alive .. music never abandoned me .. ever .. if I feel down it comes to me .. “ Music is Magic “ ❤️
Exactly! It’s a joy to see music that we all heard on a handful of stations in NY when I was a kid (talking’ 60s!) getting a listen as well as recognition and appreciation. We all heard each other’s music all the time. Reaction videos are helping everyone to listen to music they probably never would hear otherwise . Thank you!6
My uncles- bless them- took it upon themselves to try to teach me about life and how men could be. When I got boobs early, they rented a projector - pre VCR days- and Mae West movies and said "Boys/men are going to look. This will always be part of your life. Own it and control it." They also played this song to tell me lots of boys/men are going to imagine relationships with you. That is on them. You can be kind but you don't owe them anything just because you were polite to them and they wanted more.
Much LOVE from Sweden! ❤ You bring light to this world!! 🌞✨️ Thank you, my brother 🤗 And yes, this song is the bomb! ❤ Michael McDonald has the voice of an angel. 🥹🪽
When was the last time I heard this song? Almost daily. It's one of my top five songs of all time. The Doobies deserve all the love they get. They are just a salve on a wounded world.
I grew up hearing the Doobie Bros. My parents loved them. I remember seeing the pictures from when the saw their farewell tour concert. This takes me back🤣
Can you imagine the producer in the studio listening to this and being like, "This is a smash. This is a for sure hit."? It is so obvious the second you hear it.
But it didn’t happen. I read that the executives at Warner Bros. thought it was a terrible song and could end the Doobie Bros’s Career. It made song of the year. I hope that producer got fired.😢
It's the guy in the middle. Michael MacDonald. He also sang with "Steely Dan" on a few of their albums. He has an iconic voice, that has been used in TV, movies and commercials. He has a couple of "Grammy" awards as well. When you hear him, you know immediately, it's Michael McDonald. He must be in his mid 70s these days.
A little something my grandfather told me almost fifty years ago..."truly LISTEN to every piece of music that you can get your hands on, because you will surprise yourself with what you end up liking...for DISCOVERY only happens once. So, kick back and enjoy it." All these years later, I can tell you that those words are certainly true. But yeah, this one will make you smile like a opossum eatin sht out of a hair brush.
