Fun Fact: The Doodlebops were the first concert I ever went to. They were super excited, super interactive and at one point they even came into the audience to meet kids.
I remember my mom saying there was a group of Conservative Christian pediatricians saying not to let children watch Doodlebops because it would make them grow up to be gay. My brother's children also were not allowed to watch Yo Gaga Gaba because DJ Lance was perceived as as gay to them. I don't think they understood the concept of an adult portraying a character meant to be a child.
as someone who works in kids’ TV i have an explanation for characters disappearing without notice!! back in the day, these shows would air daily for years and years. if an actor left after one season, they wouldn’t explain their absence because a young viewer might be watching the previous season the next day and be confused. they were designed to be shuffled interchangeably forever! we see less of this now thanks to streaming. :)
Fun fact: as a kid, I was convinced that the Doodlebops were just Zac Efron, Ashley Tisdale, and Corbin Bleu doing another Disney Channel show and that all the adults around me were pretending it wasn’t them so it would “ruin the magic.” An absolutely bonkers concept, but hey, I was six and only got cable on vacation 😂
Tbh when it comes to Moe a lot of people mention him being somewhat charming or charismatic and that’s why he’s a popular childhood crush but I dare to say that I think Moe gives off impeccable himbo energy. He can’t hide for shit, but still tries and thinks he’s doing well. When discussing his favorite color orange, as referenced in this video, he can only think of one orange thing and it’s not even the fruit. He’s been seen more often as upbeat and outgoing in otherwise negative or uncomfortable situations, but I think it’s less about rebellion as it is about him just being a dumbass. Less “not like other guys” energy, more “poor little meow meow” vibes, personally.
When I was a kid, I loved the DoodleBops... I believe the reason I started avoiding the show was because I had a nightmare that Moe did his classic "I'm gonna pull the rope" and when the water came down, his head popped off, exposing wires and had sparks flying... Pretty traumatizing considering Moe was my favorite member. Have a good day
i knew someone in high school who was one of the kids in the "don't pull the rope" segment in one episode and i was more impressed by that than he was lmao also you did a great job with that orange makeup, it's blended really well!
Hey, Athena. You should do a Lore video on Octonauts. I've been playing it on TV for my pets, and it's SURPRISINGLY good. It's action- packed, The characters are all fun, and unlike the braincell killer that is Cocomelon, it's actually educational.
Sometimes I feel kind of bad whenever you say that kids are supposed to sit these out cuz I often watch these with my one-year-old daughter whose name is also Athena because every time she sees your makeup or hears you say your own name she gets adorably fascinated and confused. 😂 (She was named after a friend of mine before I started watching you but it's still hilarious to see her just like "wtf this colorful RU-vidr said my name????"😂)
Awwww omg that’s too sweet!!!! I love that 😭 I mean it’s all up to the adults in the situation of course I just feel bad for all the cursing and adult jokes
@@AthenaPOfficial I didn't expect that to get so many responses 😅 and to be honest I don't really feel bad I was were joking about that part, I honestly think your videos are fine lol 😅
@@AthenaPOfficialTBH I don’t even think you’re that bad- at least compared to a lot of other YTers. Most of the jokes you make would probably go over a kid’s head IMO.
This is such a tremendous deep dive but also the Doodlebops scared the shit out of me as a kid so I'm finally getting a glimpse into the show that I never watched because I'd hide behind the couch whenever it came on.
I did the same thing with toodles from Mickey Mouse Clubhouse TOODLES I HID BEHIND A WALL IN THE HALLWAY BETWEEN THE LIVING ROOM AND KITCHEN BECAUSE OF TOODLES (I was 4 but still and I was even more scared when they gave them a face)
I feel so validated knowing other people liked Moe. I thought I was weird and never told anyone how I felt. Maybe it's weirder now that I'm an adult 🤷♀️
@@darkstrifequeen1458 me too lol off topic but moe gave me freaky bride of Chucky vibes lol the freaky guy that was in the bed with Tiffany lol but that made me like him even more 😂😂
This show, Out of the Box, Bear in the Big Blue House and more really bring back so many memories. The songs are great and still catch myself singing the songs from time to time.
The Wiggles, Bear in the Big Blue House, and Sesame Street were my main favorites. But I did also grow up with the Doodlebops, Bob the Builder, Nick Jr, Playhouse Disney, etc.
This is how i feel about the freshbeat band. Like i love kids media specifically animation but whenever its live action with adult actors its so hard for me to wrap my head around like
I was 19 in college excited to start my day with an episode of the doodlebops before I left for classes. I’d be mad if I woke up and their show wasn’t on Disney. Then there were days where I wouldn’t have any classes and I’d get to watch the doodlebop marathons. I never understood the timeline of the show, but it was still fun to watch. “Get on the bus” was my favorite song.
If you like photo puppetry a lot, then you should do a lore on the Disney show Fish Hooks! They use photo puppetry A LOT and it’s honestly imo the second best usage of it I’ve seen since Wonder Pets. Plus, the show is incredibly funny and has a ton of great characters.
As a Canadian, Kids CBC has so many weird and wonderful cartoons and I am overjoyed you did this video!!! In case you want to do more cartoons from Kids CBC, I recommend the Save Ums, Busytown Mysteries, and Razzberry Jazzberry Jam!!! Those were my favourites, love your content Athena!
I was about to request Busytown Mysteries cuz the "Who, What, When, Where, Why, How?" song constantly pops up in my head But the Save Ums brought so many repressed memories
God, as a Canadian that also grew with Kids CBC and TVO kids (another significant TV channel from my childhood) I wholeheartedly stand by *all* of this.
Okay, I know it's very unlikely, but now that Athena has mentioned The Monkees very briefly, I feel like she'd have a fuckin' BLAST giving their show the Athena lore treatment-
I fell down that rabbit hole of a show too. It was so fun and silly. But of course it was a 60s show, so a good amount of stuff in that are pretty dated(and possibly a little offensive) but nothing too bad as most of the enviable race jokes in them are mostly about how other races think white American and British people are silly.(which valid)
@moaday9952 but also there was drama behind the scenes, the tone shifted between the season, the movie Head with Jack Nickelson as one of the writers and a special that causes Peter Tork to quit
I always thought the doodlebops just painted themselves like the band KISS, but now seeing the cartoon with other colorful humans has my questioning everything
the doodlebops were my obsession as a young child (I was probably 4-6) and my parents managed to find a live show near us to take me to see, and my mom made me a deedee costume for the previous Halloween that I wore to that as well. So glad to see this pop up in my recommended along with random episodes of the show this past month
They were my first concert, I got up front and Moe grazed his hand over us and I got to touch it. I was SCREAMING “Moe touched me!! Moe touched my hand!!” So funny
Maaaaan hearing you say "Playhouse Disney" really gave me nostalgia. I was a Canadian child in the 2000s and have distinct memories of the doodlebops. I love when folks cover Canadian TV shows. Other kids cartoons worth going into lore may be George Shrinks, or Bear and the Big Blue House. Both classics of my childhood. I can't believe I'm 20 😅
I used to be so afraid of this show when I was super young, but I wouldn’t turn it off. I would hide underneath blankets and furniture until it would go away.
I feel like I really identify with the doodlebops as a music teacher who works with very young children- like they're kind of my muses? Tbh I could live my life as the goth doodlebop
@@lilac_reed honestly I'm playing keyboard and reed on Be More Chill right now for a local youth theater production and I am for sure channeling my inner goth doodlebop
Omg a goth doodlebop sounds so cool. Like you'd just look like a member from kiss 😭😭😭 I'd be the emo doodlebop who's purple and sings about how sad I am
You should totally make a video on the Imagination Movers! I remember loving that show as a kid and it was super wacky. I think you might enjoy looking into it! Love you videos!!! :)
I went to a doodlebops concert when I was 3 and I still have the ticket stub tucked in my memory box. It is one of my earliest and most cherished memories.
I watched this so much as a little kid and the ONLY THING I ever remembered of it when I got older was the "Where's Mo?" bit. I could never remember what the show was called or who the other 2 were for years, but the damn Mo bit was permanently burned into the core of my brain
This show brought back many suppressed childhood memories because my little sister was obsessed with it as a kid! The songs were also so annoyingly earwormy that I remember getting so annoyed with this show every time she watched it! My family still owns a DVD of it, and my little sister isn't able to live down her childhood obsession with it and gets embarrassed every time it is mentioned!
Im not even joking, I had a nightmare about the doodlebops years after i stopped watching. Rooni tried to kidnap my mom and turn her into a doodlebop. Didi was helping me try to stop him from turning my mom blue. I dont fully remember what Mo was up to, like some moments he was trying to help capture my mom, and other times he was helping us escape... I was forever scarred. I remember the bus song but no memory of the vus or the driver
The reason that chicken puppet is so eerie is because it has front facing eyes, which predators have- unlike like, deer for example who have eyes on the side of their head because their prey. (Just thought to add that lol)
@@cyruscunningham1075 oh my godddd that's so coolll!!! Id love to have some pet chickies!! When you go out to see them again please give them some good treats and pets if they like them for me, I bet they're so cute and nice to keep (,',': I love their eyes and their faces and beaks they're just so coolll
I didn’t remember watching this show in the slightest… until you mentioned the running gag with moe and the falling water. That somehow sparked a memory for me.
Tbh I love the Doodlebops more now as an adult than I did as a kid 😂 I just love their sincere silliness. Also they do have some total bops in their catalog, I love Moe's "I Can Dance" 💃
Please do Octonauts! It’s an animated British TV series about animals discovering sealife and I think it would be the perfect show to do a lore episode on
My little sister was completely obsessed with this show as a kid, and I remember being so against it because they freaked me out. Like those three are the only three kids show characters that really and truly frightened me
I remember being little and watching this as a kid, it was my favorite show, and even though it's been years since I've last seen it the theme song is still trapped in my brain
Unlocking yet another childhood memory. Remember watching this on a Saturday morning after the NEWS (and maybe some other shows like Hannah Montana, TROLLZ) with my mom and my little cousin telling me on the phone that Mo (our Fav character...🧍♀️) was on. 🥰
@@angelcoffee1972 Reminded me visually and tonally of Winx Club, but I couldn't ever substantiate the claim of seeing it once. Now I can. Thanks so much!
I remember being OBSESSED with this show when I was young but i don't think my child brain understood what was going on half the time Still remember the theme though
I use to hate the theme since I was above the age demographic, but the bus song kinda made me laugh because of how slowly the bus folded itself out of existence.
This show had such an impact on me that I made Deedee Rooney and Moe my imaginary friends, and I would excitedly point beside me when watching going “look! that’s you!” as if my imaginary doodlebops were delighted to see themselves on tv. good times
I remember watching Doodlebops with my niece (along with a lot of children’s shows) and becoming so used to the songs, I ended up burning a CD with the songs and secretly listening to them 😂 made me want to pursue becoming a children’s book illustrator, I adored kids media so much!
I remember finding Mo so handsome! I also thought he looked so similar to the actor who played Cory’s older brother’s best friend from Boy Meets World. I dunno why I cannot remember his name right now. But yes. That guy. Apparently they’re different people. My brain refuses to believe this lol.
I haven't heard or seen anything about the Doodlebops for over a decade now. I had mostly forgotten about them. But I stumbled upon your video, saw the Thumbnail, thought "Who the Hell are-", and had just a WAVE of forgotten childhood memories wash over me. It was such a kick to the jaw that it immediately got me to subscribe. Nice job
Same! I forgot about this show. I didn’t watch it all the time as a kid, but I knew about it and watched a few episodes but it wasn’t a favorite of mine. I found it kinda weird as a kid lol
I wasn't allowed to watch Doodlebops when I was a kid because my parents hated it, but I would sneak-watch it in hotels and stuff. I simped HARD for Rooney in those days and...yeah, he's cute for a weird kids show character.
The amount of headcanons I have after seeing this is unbeatable. Moe was the awakening of my interest in men tbh, but that aside I really loved the video and also thankful that you mentioned that the show is not on Disney+
This video really brought back some childhood memories for me. I remember the Doodlebops being one of my favorites when I was little, and I'm not sure why but this show kinda has similar energy to another kids show from 90s called Adventures in Wonderland. If you're familiar with that, it'd be kinda interesting to see you cover that show in one of these videos somewhere down the road; that show was like a fucking fever dream.
I remember seeing the Doodlebops on Playhouse Disney as a kid. I saw these guys live back in 07 and once at a fair too a year later. I don't remember a lot of this show besides the main characters, the manager, the bus driver, and I think I remember the whole bus transformation thing.
17:49 the energy thing reminds me of Bo on the Go. It's a cartoon that teaches exercising and the main character, Bo, asks the audience to give her their energy. "I CAN FEEL YOUR ENERGY" is so creepy
Just got back from seeing the Barbie movie and am filled with nostalgia and existential dread, so of course an Athena upload is perfect to match my mood. 😂💕
I don’t remember watching this show as a kid but for some reason the chicken using colored eggs to communicate just dug into a nerve in my brain, like I have no memory of anything else but that one scene is burned into my memory
As a kid I loved them, as a teen I was jokingly scared of their appearance, now I can’t sleep at night knowing the Doodlebops will get me at some point
I rewatched some of it after i heard you were gonna make this video. I was surprised to find that i still enjoy it to this day. The songs are good and the characters are fun. Moe's my favorite, of course. He's funny and um pretty. I may like him a little too much. *cough* (I'm ace, i swear. I just think he's pretty.) Anyway, great show. Btw you could also do a video about Yo Gabba Gabba. My little cousin was obsessed with that show. It drove me insane.
Oh my gosh! I freaking remember how much I loved this show and the bus song! Was not expecting a lore video centered around these guys but hey I’m all for it!😊
Hearing you do the pledge sent me back to being eight years old, on the couch with a fever and sipping matzo ball soup. I'm holding my strawberry shortcake plush and no one dares enter the living room less they catch whatever cold I had. It's just me Rooney, DeeDee and Mo
Let’s be honest, EVERYONE had a crush on Mo, and it’s justified. I love the lore review, and I honestly can’t believe they’re classified as “humans”. Two shows I think you’d have fun with are “The Fresh Beat Band” and “The Upside Down Show”. For some reason, watching this reminded me of them.
I still have a vivid memory where one time I was watching the show and the episode freezes on a frame of DeeDee’s face for I think around 3 hours, if not more, all whilst playing the audio of the episodes. I only could escape it by watching Cartoon Network, which wasn’t too bad initially cause KND was on, but every time I show I didn’t like came on I’d be stuck either watching that or watching a singular frame of the Doodlebops with vastly different audio playing behind it
I’m so glad there’s a channel that talks about all these hidden childhood shows! I grew up watching pbs kids and to this day I still love it! But boy has it changed… Love the video!
I remember loving the doodlebops but HATING the episode about cauliflower and forcing Roony to try it, and now at almost 20 I still refuse to eat cauliflower.
