Who in the bloody hell DISLIKES this?! Makes no sense. This is a masterpiece and read by a master. Not only do they draw you in but you become lost in the story in and of itself, the way it was meant to be told, the way you are meant to experience true indescribable terror in the comfort of your own home. Ahh, so awesome.
One of my favorite Lovecraft fantasy tales, with a decidedly Lovecraftian ending. You imagine if Lovecraft had lived to write a grand epic set in the Dream Lands?
I bought the complete works of HP lovecraft a few years ago. I am finally getting around to reading it. After I read and reread each individual short story, I listen to it read out loud. Love it. We had an entire gothic section of American Literature in high school and we never read this. I asked my lit teacher why did we not. And then it turned into a 5 hour conversation about everything I have read. It’s a club and damn it it’s a beautiful club
My favourite part about this story is how Lovecraft paid *especially* close attention to describe the city. And yet from the very beginning you know that *doom* is coming to this city. That no matter how magnificent, no matter how populated, no matter how wealthy. It's going to be obliterated, somehow, someway. He also leaves the fate of the king and nobles fate vague. But my guess is they were transformed into the same fishlike people from Ib. They became what they hated, and their civilization sunk beneath the swamp.
Thanks for the compliment. I agree, they can be difficult to read aloud. I had to completely re-record 'Cool Air' because my first attempt sounded absolutely awful - I'd adopted an totally unsuitable tone which wasn't working. Some of my old recordings aren't my best, but I'm trying to cultivate my 'voice of doom' so practice makes perfect!
Lovecraft is just awesome. ...his imagination must of been in constant perpetuity.if you look at the amount of material he wrote its absolutely amazing an incredible achievement really.
Honestly mate I've heard the audible version of the Lovecraft stories and they seriously need to hire your ass, you absolutely nail it for tone and pace!
Near to 2024 and your narrations still pull me back. Been listening for about 10 years. Takes a real good voice to keep me coming back after all this time.
@@Gisburne2000 holy crap I never expected you to reply on here! I figured you’d lost this account to time, honestly. And indeed, you’ve certainly not been idle - the last few years I’ve had the pleasure of reading some of your poetry from your website. What ever your endeavor push on! Maybe I’ll see about buying a book or two.
@@ZippyMrMew You can try, but they are not for sale at the moment. Still working on that, but I prefer to give things away. I'm on DeviantArt as Gisburne (poetry) and Adadia (prolific AI art uploads!). Thanks for sticking around. One day I may make more videos, or I may not. 😁
@@Gisburne2000 Hey that would be awesome, but no pressure. I personally struggle with inspiration for creating things. Just remember you have loyal fans here haha
You seem to have a direct link to my dreams. I don't usually remember my dreams, but I do when I read Lovecraft. When falling asleep to stories by him, read by your fantastic voice, I always remember what I dream. So thank you.
You have a great voice. Lovecraft´s texts are rather difficult to read out loud and you do it very well! For you and all fans of Lovecraft: check out the award winning film "shadow of the Unnamable". It´s probably the most faithful adaptation so far & it´s in colour! You can find the latest trailer on youtube. The film is touring festivals worldwide and will be available on dvd later this year.
I really really want Nick to read the dream quest of unknown kadath the one that's on here seems to have been read by an amateur with all the slips she makes and I just don't find her voice as well suited to Lovecraftian stories as his or Conrad Feininger
Dark Gomamon New Jersey is America's rectum, which is actually a slight against rectums. At least they serve a purpose. New Jersey can make no such claim.
+DIAZ52 The Doom did go to New Jersey, but only as far as the Meadowlands. And when The Doom saw what horrors the hand of men had wrought upon the marshes and fenlands of that place, it retreated screaming into the Great Ocean to the east, and never more came to trouble the lands of men.
@lionmane3131 My voice is deeper and more 'grainy' after I've just woken up, but it changes very quickly so I usually record short works in the morning and longer works (where I don't want it to change by the time I'm half way through) in the evening.
You rock Gisburne! For everyone who enjoys these, you should also check out the site "voices in the dark" It has the following titles FREE to download: The Alchemist - 1908 The Beast in the Cave - 1905 Memory - 1919 The Music of Erich Zann The Outsider - 1921 -- first published April 1926 in Weird Tales The Rats in the Walls The Shadow Over Innsmouth - 1931 -- published in 1936 The Street
FUN FACT: Sarnath near Varanasi was the first place Buddha preached a sermon. He taught them that suffering is caused by desire and to end suffering they must give up desire. The local populace said "Mrrggg R'ylehh wahh" in agreement and allowed him to spread the word unhindered because they felt he was doing "the Leviathan's work". Sarnath is now technically the site of one of the greatest Buddhist shrines!
Calvino - Fool, you should at least read Wikipedia before posting such comparisons between the Indian city of Sarnath, and the fictional city of Sarnath. Here:"Though Sarnath is a historical city in India-the place where the Buddha first taught-Lovecraft said that he thought he invented the name independently.[2]"
SomeKindaSpy Well firstly, I wasn't talking to you. Secondly: "The local populace said "Mrrggg R'ylehh wahh" in agreement" is a joke, because it invokes the idea that Buddha was talking to a bunch of old-god worshipping fish people, the joke is also in the notion that the two cities turn out to be the same. I'm not even angry you swore at me because you were mistaken, however in an ironic (which I know might be a bit much for you) self-fulfilling prophecy you have demonstrated yourself to be the very autistic imbecile I was accusing someone else as being, well done and fuck you too!
Calvino - First let me answer your paranoia. No it's not a combined troll attack, cause we're not trolls and I don't know SomeKindaSpy. If we agree that you're an inarticulate dork, it's because we came to that view independently. But in your cowardice and vanity, you accuse us both of degeneracy, rather than taking the blame for your own brutishness. There are many indicators of a society in ruin, but calling your bullshit is not one of them. I don't know what you do for a career, or even if you have one, but I don't believe your life or thoughts to be of any value or consequence to the wider world.
Long-time admirer of your work. Your voice is phenomenal. I hope you'll peruse my own channel sometime. I took the liberty of adding you to my "Featured Channels" section.
Thanks for the info. I'm going to download lots of your stuff to mp3...Lovecraft is coming to the gym with me this afternoon...How mundane is that? Again, thanks.
Honestly, the people of Sarnath had it coming. Not ONLY did their ancestors commit genocide against a people who weren't bothering anyone, but they had the gall to take the statue of their deity and ritualistically detest it for a thousand years AND celebrate the genocide! Sure, the beings of Ib were weird-looking and danced in a weird way, but were they doing anyone harm? This is the main reason as to why I classify Bokrug as one of the least malevolent Great Old Ones.
in today's language it seems quite pretentious.it is an early work, and he definitely crafted a better story later in his career that stands the test of time. but, nonetheless it is the birth of the cthulhu mythos.well read, kudos
