By far my favourite Lovecraft story. It is beautiful, haunting and whispers of a greater narrative.

I see a lot of George R R Martin’s inspiration from Lovecraft pulled specifically from this wonderful story.

The Altar of Chrysolite. Chrysolite is another name for the gemstone, Peridot. Peridot can be found within meteorites from outer space, and is seafoam/cosmic green in color. A small and clever detail by H.P. Lovecraft.

So far this is my favorite story I have heard in my initial Lovecraft binge. The universe he created is by far phenomenal and mirrors the timeless fate of nations and kingdoms that go against divine authority and ultimately seal their own fates. The "Arabian Nights" influence in this tale is fantastic and based on Lovecraft's gripping descriptions, it is clear to see how the text had a deep impact on his work.

Yes. Other horror channels try to create horror by being dramatic with the reading. This channel is perfect.

I've read this a couple of times before, but only now I noticed this bit: "On a pair of golden crouching lions rested the throne, many steps above the gleaming floor. And it was wrought of one piece of ivory, though no man lives who knows whence so vast a piece could have come." Compare it with this bit from Dunsany's Idle Days on the Yann: "...but as I came to the outer wall of the city I suddenly saw in it a huge ivory gate. For a while I paused and admired it, then I came nearer and perceived the dreadful truth. The gate was carved out of one solid piece!"

A society built entirely on *ROYALLY PISSING OFF A GOD* cannot last forever. Also, am I the only person who feels bad for the beings of Ib? They were slaughtered just because the people of Mnar thought they were icky. I'm glad they got some justice in the end.
@heathenpride7931

Oddly it lasted a 1000 years, longer than almost all realms known to exist. Only the Roman Empire and perhaps a few non-European civilizations (of which I’m not well versed in their history) lasted longer. Pretty good run I’d say.

@@heathenpride7931 Yeah, a pretty good run until *BOKRUG FINALLY DECIDED TO WRECK THEIR SHIT.* Then it was wiped off the map. So I believe my point of "don't piss off a God" stands.

A classical tale warning against the hubrys of mankind, as well as denoucing several of our flaws, violence, racism. the 50 millions inhabitants mentioned at the end matches the over the top feel of the tale but otherwise sounds ridiculous. Great narration as always.

Have given/read this story to several people over the years. They all thought they had heard it before or a story like it. Someone thought it was from that scary book the bible. I It is as if lovecraft was able to tap into poetry that was allways there.
