I've said this many times Larry, you've got to give Strange Days a good hard listen. Let the atmosphere soak in. Listen to it at night, with the lights out. Maybe in the car while driving down one of our Ontario backroads. When I first listened to Strange Days, I read the liner notes which said to listen in the dark, which is what the band did a little bit. The only lights were the headlights from passing cars coming in through the blinds. I also listened to it during night time drives in Algonquin. Absolutely majestic experience.
I completely agree. Strange Days is meant to be listened to in the dark. It's got some exciting yet eerie sounds to it. As someone who also frequents Ontario backroads, Strange Days is a must.
1.) The Doors- A+ 2.) L.A. Woman- A+ 3.) Morrison Hotel- A+ 4.) Strange Days- A+ 5.) Waiting For The Sun- A+ 6.) The Soft Parade- A+ 7.) Other Voices- B 8.) Full Circle- B-
Probably one of my favourite bands of all time, I think all there albums are equal in my opinion although I think Soft Parade is the weakest of them all. 1. LA Woman 2. Strange Days 3. The Doors 4. Morrison Hotel 5. Waiting For The Sun (quite underrated) 6. The Soft Parade
1. The Doors 2. L.A. Woman 3. Strange Days 4. Morrison Hotel 5. Waiting For The Sun 6. The Soft Parade I like L.A. Woman a bit more than Morrison Hotel because it has more classic tracks, and was the perfect ending to Jim's prolific, sadly short career. Waiting For The Sun should be higher on my list because it has a lot of my favorite Doors songs, but the weak points drag it down. Why they didn't include "Waiting For The Sun" on that album, which was recorded during the same sessions, I will never know. The Soft Parade is by no means a bad album to me. It's very enjoyable, but I think they were trying too hard to sound different. Their best work was done when they were just being themselves. Great video, Larry! :)
I think you should re listen. As usual Larry is very insightful. There two weakest albums are their 2nd and 3rd which by the way was Jim's thoughts too. The Soft Parade is actually them coming back and Soft Parade is a great LP with some of their best songs and it's own sound. The Soft parade, Wild Child, Shamans Blues are classics. Even Larry's favorite two are the same choices for me. Morrison Hotel or LA Woman. I also change my mind all the time. Although on songs I disagree with Larry but not the LPs. That's the Doors for you. Maggie Maggie is top 5 for me Punk Blues full of biker rage and partying menace. The Spy is top 10 where as he thinks little of it. He loves Road House Blues, I think it plods and sags and gets its ass kicked by Backdoor Man and Maggie Maggill
To me, LA Woman is by far their best. To me, it's a culmination of everything great they had done, a perfection of their sound. They were mature at that point, while not being stale. I will admit I may be a bit biased, as I grew up listening to SRV and classic blues music, so the blues sound on it really draws me in. Also, the version I have on CD has the Orange County Suite bonus track, which is one of my favorite songs of all time, though LA Woman would still be my favorite even without any bonus material. My feelings on Waiting for the Sun, which is either my 2nd or 3rd favorite, are similar to how you feel about Soft Parade. I listened to that album a ton in high school. Its kinda cheesy, but it (along with George Harrison's All Things Must Pass and Tame Impala's Lonerism) was one of the albums I listened to most shortly after the end of my first "real" relationship. I'd also have to say that it would definitely be my #2 if Celebration of the Lizard had been finished. Morrison Hotel would have to be the other that would be either 2nd or 3rd, for similar reasons to LA Woman, though I enjoy the album experience of LA Woman more, as LA Woman is just a bit more refined. The other 3 albums with Morrison I feel are sort of tied for fourth place, though I'd maybe put their debut towards the top. They are all great. As for the post Morrison albums, I just haven't been able to bring myself to listen to them. Maybe I'm just pretentious, but I just can't.
The Doors is my favourite album. Every song is incredible. I didn't even know the Doors made any albums without Jim Morrison. I don't want to listen to them anyway! Once Jim Morrison died, so did the Doors as far as I'm concerned. Likewise with Queen & Freddie Mercury.
Craig Elliott the problem with lead singers' deaths is that, most of the time, the bands build their style and compositions to fit with the singer's voice, so they are irreplaceable if anything happens. It's not that the band gets worse without its lead singer, it's just that their arrangements sound less familiar to the fans without the lead singer.
yeah give Waiting on the sun another chance, try Spanish Caravan & Wintertime Love, Not to touch the earth, My wild love went riding..probably with Clint Eastwood....Five to One oh come on, I could do without parts of Strange Days, parts of Soft Parade, even their first album sounded tinny. and by LA Woman Jim's voice was shot. Waiting on the sun was done at the tail end of the psychedelic stuff they started out with and the jazz/blues that they ended up with. Their best album I think though was Morrison Hotel. Peace Frog, Blue Sunday, Roadhouse blues, Maggie McGill, Indian summer oh come on now.
World Walker, OK, here is why I don’t include the other 2 albums: 1. I just cannot listen to them! They are not the worst stuff ever recorded, but they aren’t worth listening to beyond 1 listen. If you think they are just as good as their earlier albums, then you need to listen to them again 2. I cannot stand a Doors song without Morrison. However, if Robby Krieger or Ray Manzarek left, it would be the same story. The magic of the Doors came from all 4 of those members unique styles. I am not sure if you can even call it a Doors album without all of the members there. Remember, their power lies in the unity of the 4 members’ styles. So I just cannot listen to those songs without Morrison singing them. Even in a documentary of their debut I watched the other members said they had trouble trying to stay together without him, their chemistry was perfect! 3. Most Doors fans don’t care for the last 2 albums. Some fans (like me) have trouble calling them real Doors albums. Why? Because they are so goddamn terrible compared to their previous works. So even if I don’t include them, I have my reasons. Also, don’t call me a “fake” fan of the Doors because I don’t include those 2 albums in some silly list online! Go find something else to do. Edit: Grammar
Just discovered your channel, comrade. I've subscribed. As for this clip. As arguably the world's No. 1 expert on the Doors, let me tell you this: Waiting for the sun has always received a bad rap from critics who thought it was just the "leftovers" from their debut album. It's actually a great, great album. Love street is ominous, with an incredible twist at the end, that brings the whole concept of love into perspective. Not to touch the Earth, one of their most philosophical songs that question our place in the world. Yes, the River knows, many idiots have actually made fun of the song, specially the "I'm going but I need a little time", verse, the should pay attention to what follows. Great album, listen to it again, by al means!
They are brilliant, with all of them seemingly custom made for each other. Nothing short of genius at work in all of their albums. Please, don't make the mistake of only listening to their "hits". The ones you'd never hear on a radio are the real gems. Hyacinth House (LA Woman) and Shaman's Blues (& Easy Ride) are all amazing.
Amit Kalderon Everything they did from 1967- April 1971 was awesome, some of the greatest stuff ever recorded! L.A. Women, Morrison Hotel, their debut, and Strange Days are all classics! However after L.A. Women, they started to suck since Morrison died.
It is funny Larry as I just came across this video by you right now, about one of my top five musical artists ever. The Doors. Usually I make a comment and then leave a list of my favorites in order as an alternative list but as you have EXACTLY the same order of preference as I do; in this case I get to not have to write my own list. Bingo Larry!
Touch choice but 8. Full Circle(need to listen to more) 7. Other Voices(Pretty good consider no JIm Morrison-Eye of the Sun is a good one in addition to the ones you mention) 6. Soft Parade(a few semi-lame tracks) 5. Waiting For The Sun(Listen to Spanish Caravan , Wintertime Love, Five To One ) 4. Strange Days 3. Morrison Hotel 2.. The Doors 1. La Woman.... 1 and 2 are very interchangeable I would even rate them as a tie. It depends on my mood.
I'll be honest, An American Prayer (Album Released 5 years after Morrisons death) which wasn't mentioned in this video is actually one of my favorite Doors albums. It was the remaining members playing instrumentals over Morrison's own poetry. While slandered as a disrespect of Morrison, I personally felt that it was an homage by the surviving members to their friend that presented his life's work in a beautiful new way. Definitely a little bit of an obscure album, but one that is worth a listen by any dedicated Doors fan.
Yes. No Doors fan can consider their collection complete without it, and it has some beautiful moments. I'd rank it behind the six original studio albums but ahead of Other Voices and Full Circle.
1 - The Doors '67 2 - Strange Days '67 3 - L.A. Woman '71 4 - Morrison Hotel '70 5 - Waiting For The Sun '68 6 - The Soft Parade '69 7 - An American Prayer '78 8 - Other Voices '71 9 - Full Circle '72
I'm just getting into the Doors after watching the film and I've only listened to their albums Waiting For The Sun and Morrison Hotel and I really enjoyed them! Liked you video too
Nice analyses for a very difficult challenge. The Morrison Hotel album is one of the those albums that you can listen to from beginning to end and stay tuned in all the way through and here it again the next day. It was very well mixed and you can see they put themselves into making this a great work of art. Morrison's voice is extraordinary and he makes those tunes become otherworldly. It's so hard to be subjective when a band has done so many good songs, but I think Morrison Hotel has that lit of bit of magic that makes it the best of the lot.
Waiting for the Sun has 'Summers almost Gone' and 'Wintertime Love'(a waltz). Spanish Caravan (flamingo guitar), Not to touch the Earth, Love Street. All great songs, but the album seems maybe rushed or not complete, hard to pinpoint it. That being said, I love it, it's a great album!! I love the acoustic laid back sound on some songs and the power on others. I have it tied with Soft Parade, 4th. 1 LA Woman 2 Morrison Hotel/Hard Rock Cafe 3 The Doors 4 Waiting for the Sun 4 Soft Parade 5 Strange Days 6 American Prayer 7 Other Voices 8 Full Circle
Yep you got my exact order as well. Peace Frog, Ship of Fools and Land Ho is one of the best song trios of all time and then chuck in Roadhouse blues, Indian summer, blue Sunday & waiting for the sun and you got yourself one hell of an album
My worst to first would be as follows... The Soft Parade Morrison Hotel L.A. Woman Waiting For The Sun The Doors Strange Days I don’t have the albums that didn’t feature Jim on vocals so I can’t list them. It was hard to list but if I had to, this is my list.
Good list, Studmuffin! Here mine: 1. The Soft Parade 2. L.A. Woman 3. The Doors 4. Strange Days 5. Morrison Hotel 6. Waiting for the Sun 7. Full Circle 8. Other Voices 9. An American Prayer
I've always loved The Doors. I agree with yours and Jinx's album choices. :) The End, Ship of Fools, and Light my Fire are three of my favorite Doors songs. I love several others that you mentioned too.
1. Morrison Hotel (10/10) 2. L.A. Woman (9.9/10) 3. Waiting For The Sun (9.8/10) 4. The Doors (9.6/10) 5. Strange Days (9.5/10) 6. The Soft Parade (9.3/10) 7. An American Prayer (8.6/10) 8. Other Voices (6.8/10) 9. Full Circle (4.0/10)
The soft parade , 1969? My favourite. Got bad reviews at first and still not considered very good. By the way, did you name your cat after the character who chased pixie and Dixie?
1) The Soft Parade 2) LA Woman 3) The Doors 4) Morrison Hotel 5) Strange Days 6) Waiting for the Sun Absolutely Live fits in around 3-4; An American Prayer comes before WFTS. It IS hard to narrow them down. I feel almost traitorous. But, if I'm being honest with myself, those are the orders of my choices. I became a diehard fan in '81, at age 12-13. I've listened to every album (yes, a vinyl LP) forwards & backwards, and this band helped thru some very serious hard times as a teen. The Doors are, and always will be, my number one band!
You should check out An American Prayer if you haven't heard it. It's the final official album by The Doors. As for the other albums...it's so hard to decide. I love all of their albums. As for the choice between L.A. Woman or Morrison Hotel, I'd go with L.A. Woman. Thanks for the video!
I love all The Doors studio album with Morrison except Soft Parade. Except for a few tracks that album fall flat with me. They did bounced back nicely with Morrison's Hotel and LA Woman.
The Doors L.A. Woman Morrison Hotel Strange Days Waiting for the Sun The Soft Parade All these Doors albums are great or have lots of great songs on them. I've never heard the 2 albums without Morrison, as most people say they aren't very good.
My favorites: 1. The Doors (debut album) 2. L.A. Woman 3. Absolutely Live 4. Morrison Hotel 5. The Soft Parade 6. Waiting for the Sun 7. Strange Days 8. An American Prayer
Number 1 never really changes for me; it is one of the best debuts of any rock band. The rest are in flux, but right now I'd say: 1) The Doors 2) Strange Days 3) Morrison Hotel 4) Waiting for the Sun 5) The Soft Parade 6) LA Woman
I’ve been Doors fan since I was in my teens, now I’m 49. Always loved Strange Days, Waiting For The Sun and L.A. Woman. The other three are also great of course, but to me not on the same level as the three albums I just mentioned. When I must chose only one Doors album I would probably say Strange Days.
All six of their Jim studio albums are very interchangeable but right now I love listening to waiting for the sun, and I was a bit surprise AN American Prayer wasn't in this video ( a very beautiful album). Larru you need to give Waiting for the Sun another chance, 1. Hello I love you - amazing song went to #1 2. Love Street - One of my favourite doors songs, so relaxing and beautiful tone 3. Not to touch the earth - Jim originally a poem, great tune, great lyrics 4. Summers Almost Gone - Probably my least favourite on the album and it is still a decent dong 5. Wintertime love - Amazing, great melodies 6. The Unknown Soldier - brilliant 7. Spanish Caravan - Robby really stands out on this, excellent 8. My wild Love - Very fun to sing with 9. We could be so good together - If this song is down there with one of worst on the album (still very good), then you know its a top-tier album 10. Yes, The River knows - No words to describe this song, absolutely amazing and poetic 11. Five to One - Jim stands out on this, one of my all-time favourite songs and favourite on this album
Here's my ranking: 6) Waiting for the Sun 5) Morrison Hotel 4) The Soft Parade 3) The Doors 2) L.A. Woman 1) Strange Days I don't count the two albums without Jim.
Hi Larry, LA Woman has always been my favourite Doors album... in fact no other album I’ve listened to has excited me. But I love Roadhouse Blues and Light My Fire...
I'm gonna give Other Voices and Full Circle another listen in a minute but, as of now, my ranking is: 8. Other Voices 7. Full Circle 6. Waiting for the Sun 5. The Soft Parade 4. Strange Days 3. Morrison Hotel 2. The Doors 1. L.A. Woman
Alright this is my revised ranking: 8. Full Circle 7. Waiting for the Sun 6. The Soft Parade 5. Other Voices 4. Strange Days 3. Morrison Hotel 2. The Doors 1. L.A. Woman
1. LA Woman 2. Strange Days 3. Morrison Hotel 4. The Doors 5. The Soft Parade 6. Waiting for the Sun I think that LA Woman and Strange Days represent the Doors' deepest and best forays into blues and psychedelia, respectively.
1 The doors/ LA Woman / Strange Days 4 Morrison Hotel 5 The soft parade 6 Waiting for the sun . The most underrated song in my opinion is The soft parade
For my list i'm gonna be including other voices and full circle because they are doors albums and i'm also gonna be counting in concert and an american prayer. 10. Full Circle 9. Other Voices 8. The Soft Parade 7. An American Prayer 5. In Concert 4. The Doors (1967) 3. L.A Woman 2. Strange Days 1. Morrison Hotel
1. Strange Days 2. L.A Woman (interchangeable with 3) 3. Morrison Hotel 4. The Doors 5. Waiting For the Sun 6. The Soft Parade I love all of them and The Doors are my third favourite band. The debut though is not nearly as good as Strange Days, which I seem to be in the minority with by saying
Morrison Hotel took me three listens to even like a bit and L.A Woman took me forever but now I absolutely adore both. Soft Parade also took me a while to get into unsurprisingly.
I've only heard the six Morrison albums. Morrison Hotel I put in last place mainly because I can never remember any of it between plays. All of the others are memorable more or less and can fight out places 1 to 5 amongst themselves.
6. The Soft Parade 5. Morrison Hotel. 4. L.A. Woman 3. Strange Days 2. Waiting for the Sun 1. The Doors. The Doors albums I listen to the most are Waiting for the Sun and Strange Days.
Despite loving the Doors, I have yet to hear all their albums. LA Woman has always been my favourite of the ones I do know, but Morrison Motel is a new discovery for me, and I do really like that one too. Although oddly enough, for me the album gets better as it goes along, rather than tapering off.
1. LA Woman 2. Soft Parade 3. The Doors 4. Morrison Hotel 5. Strange Days 6. Waiting For The Sun La woman more complete album feel. Morison hotel has peace frog! Soft parade so underated
I really don't have a favorite Doors album per se , I feel each album has more than half songs beyond legendary. However one live album I really wished they would release was when the Doors performed In London Sept.1968, That show the Doors were truely on their A game
i dont think i could rank their albums because they're my favorite, but ill try. 8. other voices 7. full circle 6. soft parade (i love runnin, blue) 5. waiting for the sun, some great songs are (not to touch the earth, five to one, yes the river knows) 4. morrison hotel (indian summer is one of top 5 doors songs) 3. la woman (i think it is better than morrison hotel) 2. strange days (when the musics over is insane) 1. the doors great video!
Ranking from a 16 year old: 1. The Doors. 2. LA Woman 3. Waiting for the Sun (controversial placement). 4. Strange Days. 5. Morrison Hotel. 6. Soft Parade (everybody saw this coming).
Without Jim are obviously the lesser albums. My least favorite of the original lps is The Soft Parade but I still like it. As for Waiting For The Sun, the song Not To Touch The Earth is one of the best. LA Woman is my favorite album by them.
I have the same top 3 then Waiting for the Sun, Strange Days and Soft Parade. I bought a copy of Waiting for the Sun on cd back in the early 90s and the mix was different so I took it back. I also like their live albums and An American Prayer. The Doors are a good example of why I don't like best of compilation albums: you miss out on some great tracks.
kiolasmash550 - You're right about missing out on good tracks. When I was younger I wanted greatest hits because I couldn't afford to get every album. Now I can enjoy the way the entire album was meant to be listened to 👌
I think it was the Strange Days album. Jim wanted to shoot cover with him and dogs everywhere..But someone may be the photographer said no too many dogs will be to hard to control in a studio. Correct me if Im wrong. But im sure i read that. Would of been a great cover though.
