Excellent analysis. After I watched this film I was pretty confused but your review of its themes and motifs showed me how brilliant Double is! Keep it up!

I thought this was a great movie. Reading the novel I think is a prerequisite to understanding some of the themes. But I also appreciate how it took a different route and created a sort of stand alone piece as well. Really enjoyed it.

Anyone have thoughts on the Guard also being the Doctor that tells Simon about the miscarriage?
@ZenityStudios
@ZenityStudios 4 года назад
I haven’t fully developed or thought about this idea yet, but I believe it has something to do with the duality of the person who is trying to help him also being the person who is getting in his way. The doctor is suppose to help him (and in the movie his mom) with meds and his psychological decay, but the same actor plays the security guard and the one who is getting in the way of what he wants (whether that be the butler stopping him from getting to his love during the ball or the security guard stopping him from becoming a better version of himself)

I thought he was in a psychiatric hospital all along and suffered from split personality & other mental disorders and Hanna was a nurse.

I think the guard double existing means this world has a double for everyone but since they are so different from each other that they basically don't usually meet. also it takes the crazy out of the equation for Simon. also in general this feels like a movie about the journey to try and feel comfortable the way u are instead of comparing to others

Has anyone seen Triangle movie? I have a teory where it might been quite the same case: Like some sort of sysiphus purgatory he sees his own suicide at the beginning and that's where it ends even though he dies in diferent circumstances like in Triangle but he does speaks to Hanna before he dies, she's angry at him and confronting him the night before (like the first unknown guy)
@davidl2662
@davidl2662 4 года назад
Way late on my response.... I am entrenched in this movie atm.. hope this is interesting to someone. The first death from the unknown guy jumper was version 1 simon who was able to have the main character meet the girl. Before then they never talked. The simon we know about killed off the main character so that he could be free. Could be a take on 'simon says' which is pretty fucking wild.. The main story... a person needs a mental rebirth multiple times. All the characters in the movie are mostly brain dead. The main character has some sort of drive to change.

I feel like James and Simon started to connect as one , and Simon knew this when he punched James at the funeral and simons noes started to bleed, but he had not been hit, so Simon handcuffed him to the bed and took his keys cause he had a plan to get rid of James, so he called the ambulance and told them to come ASAP then cut his face so that James could feel it too, she when he jumped on the bouncy thing that they had said if you land on it you might survive so he jumped got his head bleeding and James felt it too but instead of get help he died cause he bled out

@pegesus medusa I was thinking something similar but I feel like this theory still doesn't fit. If Simon was stopped from bleeding out wouldn't James just stop bleeding too? It's no more different then getting a broken nose but not getting punched

Awesome video, definitely supported my theory. First time watching this movie but my theory is, that Simon just creates a new version of himself, which behaves completely different than he does to get closer to Hannah. The thing, that still confuses me the most is the hospital scene(where Hannah tried to kill herself), in which Hannah is referred to as his wife. Also they speak about "fighting". Im not sure, if scene happens in Simons mind or is real, if it is real, the whole creating James thing can be seen as the story of how he got close to Hannah. But if this is true, it would be important to know if Simon really cheated on Hannah, because if he did, it wouldn't really make sense, that Hannah got his wife afterwards. But if the hospital scene happens in Simons mind, I can't find an explanation for its existence in the movie. Also why was his face full of blood and why did Hannah try to kill herself? The film leaves so much questions open for me, I will definitely have to watch it a second time. I hope, that you can maybe help me out :P

One critique, when describing the death at the beginning of the movie you say that it links with Simon’s fall because the suicide guys say exactly what Simon ends up doing but actually they were stating IF the man fell on the protection canopy thingy, he would not have died but instead be morbidly impaired.

Hey, this is not bad, especially since you haven't read much of the book and surrounding literature. I must interject though, the main theme is shadow integration. It's Dostoyevsky's life's work. It's not about as you said "birthing something that can kill you", it's about integrating the parts of yourself that would otherwise consume and kill you. Simon is a figment of James imagination, the ideal, the shadow. He is dark, assertive and disagreeable and everything James aspires to be.

I think we all kill off parts of ourselves and I mean identities that we once had. We change ourselves because we want to appease the people around us. How much is too much? That’s for you to decide and all the factors in your life should be put into consideration. Change is good it’s necessary for evolution to occur. As time goes on you need to keep up with your current situation. Change is a necessary good but it can also be bad if you make it bad. You have to constantly ask yourself throughout your life. Who you want to be, and why you want to be that person? After watching this movie everyone should ask themselves that?

Hello, I just watched the movie. Masterpiece is an understatement word to describe the movie. It was perplexedly beautiful... I love all your analysis, but what are your thoughts about the miscarriage? I would like to share some of my thoughts. The miscarriage of Hannah, I'm connecting it with the blood of Hannah that she's printing on the window. I also thought that Hannah and Simon are couple, where Simon's evil alter-ego James has been cheating on her. That's why they have been fighting. But Simon was so confused and overwhelmed with everything that he doesn't know what to be the person exactly but he was trying to amend everything which action symbolizes the pieces of papers that Simon has been collecting in the trash and putting it back into pieces again. I have many other thoughts. I didn't know if I made sense with my words above. I just want to express myself right now and there are too many things that I can't put into words... But really thank you.

You are right about James. But he is more than Simon's persona, the movie represents depersonalization disorder, in which people feel like they are out of their body. Through most of the movie, James is the real body, and Simon is just how he sees himself. The movie made it clear that mental illness runs in his family, you'll also notice he sees the guard from his work at the hospital. But the ambulance was a hallucination, in fact, him jumping was a hallucination, he actually cut his phone, handcuffed himself to the bed, not James, slit his own throat, and hallucinated while bleeding out
