For two minutes, however, he lay in his bed without moving, as though he were not yet quite certain whether he were awake or still asleep, whether all that was going on around him were real and actual, or the continuation of his confused dreams.

Being a big Dostoevsky fan, I totally love the way you reviewed this book. I believe amongst all his works, The Double is highly underrated just like Notes from Underground. Keep up the good work. More power. Greetings :)

Fortunately 'noted from the underground' was my first Dostoevsky book as well and life has never been the same since.

The Brothers Karamazov is very long but IMO the purest expression of Dostoevsky's gifts/perspective and also my favorite novel, would highly recommend it if you haven't read it yet!

I have just finished this book, it was very interesting and thought provoking. I found it hard at times to know whether or Golyadkin junior was a figment of Golyadkin senior's psychotic imagination, a real person, or confusing mix of both. There seemed to be evidence for both viewpoints. I suppose this confusion helps us understand the protagonist's mindset

Hi.. The Double is indeed a thought provoking read! To be honest, for the first half of the novel, I was under the impression that Golyadkin Jr. was this other person but it was only during the latter part of the book that it occurred to me that he could be a figment of the real protagonist's imagination, his alter ego. And THEN everything started to make sense. So yeah, I can relate to what you're saying. I'm pretty sure that reading the book the second time around is going to be even more interesting. :):)

I am russian, my English very bad but I want to say that you prononce "Goliadkin" very cute, good accent. «The Double» is my favorite book of Dostoyevski's books. This book make me thinking about my self-doubt

@@ReadADayClub I'll try with a translator: Don't worry about mistakes. But I'll point to one. In Goliadkin's name "ia" is one sound "Я" (ya). Thus Goliadkin is pronounced as if with the French soft "la" (Galadkin or something like that). I hope I've written something understandable.

The Double was extremely dark and disorienting but in the same collection Notes from Underground was surprisingly hilarious. Some parts of that novella actually made me laugh, as the narrator is so absurd and ill tempered.

Yeah I read both The Double and Notes from Underground at the same time. The latter was indeed 'surprisingly' hilarious. Even in The Double, the narrator seems ill-tempered and also so anxious all the time. I remember finishing both books really quickly only because I wanted to somehow find out what lay at the bottom of that pit.

@@ReadADayClub The two funniest parts of ‘Notes’ for me are the narrator stalking the cop planning to tackle him and his almost random hatred for his servant towards the end with Liza present slamming his fist on the table. Subscribing since you seem to be a sharp reader.

Hahaha.. yeah you know what, even I found the random contempt he expresses for his servant very comical and also bizarre. Can't wait to read the rest of his works. Dostoyevsky, I would say, can be considered the perfect successor to Tolstoy in Russian literature. Thanks a ton for this review

Not read a lot of Tolstoy to be honest. But I'm only just changing that after reading his very short novel - How Much Land Does A Man Need? I really enjoyed that one! Thanks for the feedback. :D
