Loved it, after finishing in it, I felt like I was waking up from a strange dream. Reminded me a bit of Fight Club and one of the songs from that movie's soundtrack, "Where Is My Mind" by the Pixies and also Stone Temple Pilot's "Half the Man I Used to Be" (not on soundtrack).

Oh, hadn’t thought of Fight Club, but that’s a solid connection. Thanks for sharing, Stephen. Have you read other works by Dostoevsky? Also, Love the Pixies reference! Cheers, Jack

My English quiet bad so...

Thanks for this analysis. I just started The Double as an audiobook and wanted to get a feel for what to expect in terms of style and substance. You deserve so many more views and likes. 👍🏻

It sounds like The Double is foreshadowing Kafka. I also have a volume with The Double and The Gambler (mine is translated by Pevear and Volokhonsky). I have just started the Gambler.

Kafka was in my mind too, Jim. I’ll be curious to know what you think of The Gambler. Hope you’re doing well! Best, Jack

Dostoevsky is such a great writer. I haven’t read the Double. Crime and Punishment is my favorite so far but haven’t read Brothers Karamozov. I need to read more by Gogol.

Crime and Punishment is a very strong book, Stephanie. Each time I reread it there is more to discover, same with Brothers Karamazov. Hope you’re well! Best, Jack

Fascinating! I was recently reading a biography of Sylvia Plath and learned that Plath wrote her senior dissertation on this book. I have never read Dostoevsky, but I'd be interested in reading this once I've read one of his 'masterpieces'. Thanks for the video! :)

Happy to share, Aaron. I didn’t know that about Plath, how interesting. I think Notes from Underground is a bit stronger than The Double when it comes to Dostoevsky’s shorter novels, but you might enjoy both. Hope you are well! Best, Jack

William Wilson seems like it would be a great comparison. There were a lot of comparisons I had with that and Fight Club/The Drawing of the Three a while back. I hope to read this one day!

This is how Google translates your comment :) "I read this book at the end of April and it just amazed me. I didn't know that classical literature could be so interesting. And what's more, I discovered that in some places I resembled Golyadkin, and this horrified me. This book helped me rethink many aspects of my character."

As a man who has read C and P, Gambler and an unpleasant predicment its always that last sentance that leaves you with a bunch of space to think. For an example what does he mean when he says he had foresaw that a long time ago; that would be the question number one. Secondly are the letters, if they ever existed really, and the last one that is so unreal to me.What are the chances that the woman who is taken (and at the begining of the novel is the main reason he is being kicked out of party) is sending him some kind of love letter? I personaly think that it’s just his imagination. The book certainly leaves you with many questions and really tortures about it.

Woke up from a long sleep. He yawned, stretched, and at last opened his eyes completely. For two minutes, however, he lay in his bed without moving, as though he were not yet quite certain whether he were awake or still asleep, whether all that was going on around him were real and actual, or the continuation of his confused dreams.

Good observation, thats the main question. Did this ever really happened and if so, how was it in reality?

I loved The Double. It got an enjoyable film adaption a few years ago, from the British director Richard Ayoade. Another couple of good doppelganger stories: Gualta by Javier Marias from his collection While the Women are Sleeping, and Giovanni Papini's wonderful Two Faces in a Well, which you can read online, there's a link under the Stories section of his Wiki page.

Thanks for those recommendations, Matthew, all were new to me. I did see the film, which I thought was quite effective. I want to say that I watched it in a few parts while giving our newborn daughter bottles of milk at night, haha. I hope you are doing well! Best, Jack

@@ramblingraconteur1616 Two excellent doppelganger stories! And I'll be talking about another one this evening, Borges' August 25, 1983. I had a couple of viewing experiences like that when my son was a little younger, hoping his nap would last long enough for me to see the end.

When I was about 12 I had a series of dreams over the course of 3 nights which led me to consciously formulate the question: "Which is reality, the one I have just come from (dreaming) or the one that I am waking into (waking)? Anybody that is seriously interested in this question would do well to investigate what Steiner calls the Ahrimanic double. Happy hunting!

I just finished the novel. I didn't fully understand whether the events that happened were real or not. if everything was real, then how can Mr. Golyadkin come home from the party and see the other Golyadkin in his room? Or why no one talks about what happened at the party? I don't think I read the book carefully, I need to read it again.
@ramblingraconteur1616
@ramblingraconteur1616 Год назад
There is a layer of ambiguity to the work. I'm not sure Dostoevsky could identify what was "actually" happening. I hope you enjoy the reread. Cheers, Jack
