I have vicious enemies who have vowed to ruin me!
'The Double' by Fyodor Dostoyevsky is a short tale of a man who encounters a double of himself. Yakov Petrovich Golyadkin is a titular councillor living in St Petersburg during the 1800's. He starts to suffer from schizophrenic delusions and behaves bizarrely at work and amongst colleagues with increasingly severe outcomes.
I summarised the book as follows. "I found it quite lackluster, even insipid if allowed my double to be mean. No themes jumped out at me and I didn't feel there was any real depth to it. Unfortunately I found it rather forgettable and probably should have dropped reading it earlier."
I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. Kyrin out!

I have read a fair amount of Dostoyevsky since reading Crime and Punishment (my favorite Novel) 4 years ago, and am slowly collecting and reading his books. I finished The Double last night and it was by far the most difficult for me to get through. I like the story but Mr. Goliadkins manner of speech is tedious "my dear, my sweet, yes Anton Antonovich, I agree Anton Antonovich" but near the end I concluded that this only further solidifies his insanity. This was one of Dostoyevskys first novels so I don't hold it against him. Starting The Gambler tonight. Great video!

I agree, "The Double" can be a tough read with Goliadkin's repetitive dialogue. It really does highlight his mental unraveling though. Dostoyevsky's early work certainly sets the stage for his later, more polished novels. Enjoy "The Gambler" - it’s a wild ride!

Finished the book about three days ago. My first Fyodor book. I really love the literary style but the rate at which I'd forget what happened a few pages back but what do i know? Its this and that😂😂 The ending was a quite an interesting one too lol. Onto Crime and Punishment next

Nice! Glad you enjoyed the style Leon because it stays pretty similar throughout all of the books I've read. I would suggest making some small notes on characters and their different names because it's only going to get harder. Russian diminutives and pet names are hardddddd Crime and Punishment is my second favourite, let me know how you find it.

Glad I wasn’t the only one who felt this way. This was a hard book to get through, which is honestly really hard to admit. The Idiot is one of my favorite books of all time, so I had high hopes going into this one but it just wasn’t that good. I found the confused and distorted narration to be more of a distraction than an interesting/bold artistic choice on Dostoevsky’s part. I found myself having to re-read section after section because I was either so confused by what was being said, or I was so uninterested in what was happening that my mind wandered away. Pretty disappointing, but I am glad to have found this review! Really well done video, keep it up!

Wow vivian you perfectly described my experience as well. So many times I realised I had just read a paragraph or three without even remembering what it was about. So I do think it was the style more than anything else. The subject matter isn't too different from many of his others (a dark brooding character who behaves in a morally dubious way) but it didn't vibe with me either. Glad I'm not alone! P.S. My favourite of his is probably the Brothers Karamazov so far. I still need to read Demons and then after that some of his lesser known works.
