Solomonster reviews the Dark Side of the Ring episode on "The Double Life of Chris Kanyon", the sad story of a man who loved pro wrestling and was quite good at it, but severe mental health issues, along with his struggles to keep his sexuality a secret, made life hell for him and eventually led to his early demise. He also discusses the Mortis character in WCW that almost made its way to WWE television... the infamous Boy George segment with The Undertaker on Smackdown... the comments John Cena and Ric Flair made about him on The Howard Stern Show... his letter to Stephanie McMahon in 2006 and lots of other details not included in the episode.

My takeaway from this episode is that somewhere out there, there's a tape of Father James Mitchell having sex with a woman wearing a Mortis mask.

@@edalder2000 that's why professional help exists, the fact of the matter is, it's been years since anybody really cared if someone came out as gay, when he was freaking out about this in 2006, it had been 15 years since coming out was a big deal, on top of that, he let John Cena and Ric flair, two overrated wrestlers who couldn't lace his boots up on their best days embarrass him on a national platform, if I were Chris canyon I would have cussed Ric Flair and John Cena out and I would have put a 9 mm to The undertaker's throat and told him if he ever beat me with a chair like that again WWE would be paying tribute to him, he knew how to beat up on James Vandenberg but he didn't know how to beat up on the people who were actually against him and took liberties with him

@@brickcitybikeman3108 not only that he spent decades suffering from depression and bipolar disorder which wasn’t even properly diagnosed until like 2004 or 2005 and even when he came out as gay to his friends like the Young Bucks and Brian Cage and Luke Hawx they all basically said they didn’t care and they still loved him anyway but even when it seemed like he had turned a corner in his personal or professional life something would come and blow it all to hell and he just couldn’t take it anymore in fact James Mitchell (his long time friend and former manager) said that about 3 weeks before he died that Kanyon tried to kill himself by throwing himself in front of a car I think one time back in September of 2003 he tried to kill himself by intentionally overdosing on sleeping pills so it wasn’t a matter of if Kanyon was gonna die it was a matter of when and how

Depression is not when you feel blue, like when you break up with your girlfriend... Depression is your body's inability to process your negative emotions like sadness and anger and frustration. Take for example when a relative or close friend dies, usually people go through the seven stages of grief before going back to normal. When you're depressed it's actually where you're permanently stuck in stage 2 or stage 3. and you carry this like a weight on you for years. If you've ever taken x-rays and they make you carry this lead-filled covering, imagine that you're carrying this constantly for years. I've suffered from depression for 90% of my life and it's literally a weight on your shoulders. What's horrible in a way is about 20 years ago I found a psychologist who used a method to help expel all of your negative emotions, and it was amazing how light I felt after it was all over. What I hadn't realized is that you need to realize why you became incapable of processing these emotions normally, or else you're right back where you were before...

I watched all DSOTR episodes and I noticed that they limit the number of talking heads to a minimum (in contrast to AE Biography which has hundreds). They seem to select one or two persons to cover an aspect of the subject's life. Between Vandenberg and Wrath, the former has a better insight into Kanyon's career. To get the latter would've been redundant.

I grew up a wrestling fan in the 80s and 90s, stopped watching in the mid 2000s and I was a huge undertaker fan. I’m not going to lie I’ve heard some stuff this year about the undertaker that makes me feel kind of let down by him. The way undertaker treated so many WCW guys that came over and the way he treated some of the rookies, I don’t doubt he was trying to actually hurt Chris with that chair shot just like I don’t doubt he and Vince McMahon had a good laugh about how they totally ruined DDP‘s career. I heard an interview with Tracy smothers two days ago and they were asking him about his time in WWF. And he was telling a story of when they had brought him back for the ECW stuff and there was someone that had just signed with the company a new wrestler and he hadn’t been on TV yet. In his dark match he broke his arm. Well they were all in a meeting one day and this guy with the broken arm his cell phone went off in his pocket. Because his arm was in a cast in a sling he was having a hard time reaching across his body with his other arm to turn it off. Supposedly undertaker cussed the guy out in front of everybody and then the next day the guy was fired.

I was fully entranced at 8 years old in 2003 when Kanyon came out of the box in the segment with Taker. I lived and breathed wrestling then, but had no idea who Chris Kanyon was. The internet was a thing, but I was a kid and we didn't have dial up until 2006 or so. But back then, video rental stores were a thing, and one tape my parents bought me was WCW Starrcade 1997, where he and Jim Mitchell were sitting in the crowd. Didn't connect the dots in my child mind. Around 17 or 18, with the blessing of RU-vid, and "top moves of" compilations, I realized what an originator Kanyon was. Holy hell, this dude was on a different level. If he would have been able to grasp acceptable levels of promo and charisma, gosh, who knows? Especially in these days. Kanyon in say, 2017 height on the indie scene Battle of Los Angeles. Solid upper mid carder anywhere.

I’ll be honest, my first exposure of Kanyon was quite interesting. I’ll even say I loved his Flatliner finishing maneuver (which is used by various wrestlers even to this day). One of my favorite matches with him was him vs Glacier on an episode of Nitro after Wrath took both of them out. Seeing him succeed in various parts of WCW and even as a double champion during the Invasion angle made me happy for him. After seeing this episode, I truly felt bad for him and to hear Flair and even Cena told him he wasn’t good (on National TV no less) was disingenuous and not tasteless. Kanyon was truly underrated and deep down a low-key great guy. This is a testament to say that to never judge a book by its cover, especially when one is dealing with internal struggles. RIP Chris Kanyon.

I've always heard rumors that Kanyon committed suicide due to Orlando Jordan's gimmick in TNA (Surprised they didn't bring that up). Though if I were a gay man wanting to be a positive role model for kids like me only to see someone within the same community as me not only take my spot (Even if it's in another company) but portray his character in a matter that arguably did more harm than help tot he community you want to help, I wouldn't exactly feel peachy, either. They've kinda touched upon the "Triple H, ask Vince why he fired me"/"Shawn, pray for my gay soul!" incident if only slightly. Kinda wished we had a Kanyon/Nova match. I am a bisexual guy. I have been fortunate enough to have been accepted by many people. In this day and age, people are a lot less homophobic and biphobic than they once were. Although I'm only 19 years old and have only been out for 4 years, I have not experienced a lot of prejudice against me (at least not in person). Still, I have experienced occasional remarks that I have found quite hurtful. I shouldn't let them bother me as much, but I have struggled with depression for years, and sometimes something like that can really send you into a spiral. So for me to imagine what it was like for Chris Kanyon is impossible. Even I, a bisexual teen who has been lucky enough to be generally accepted, has experienced prejudice and let it get the better of me. So imagine what it was like for him, a gay man, in that day and age. I really wish things could have gone differently for him. May he Rest In Peace.

I don't really understand how he can make any comments or judge Chris Kanyon. Chris was wrestling way before anyone even knew who John Cena was. So, the fact that Chris Kanyon was only in WWE for a few years. How can Cena even make any comments about Chris Kanyon not being good enough. I did not think John Cena was all that great either. Personally, i think he was a rip off of the rock. Though the Rock is way better at his promos than John Cena and a better entertainer by far. Not saying that John Cena did not have any good matches, but he was not nearly as good as he is made out to be. John Cena was another one of Vince Mcmahon's Stooges.

This was a very sobering episode of Dark Side of the Ring. Chris Kanyon had a difficult life and it is a tragic tale. That being said, it is hard to sympathize with someone who goes from being kind to wanting to choke you to death. Furthermore, I find it funny yet ludicrous how some fans are actually trying to Cancel The Undertaker as well as John Cena for their thoughts on Kanyon. As if given a harsh opinion is worth removing someone from their legacy in the business? Smh these crackheads will always find something to complain about. Also, I agree with Solomonster that Howard Stern is known for stirring the pot and trying to start crap. What's ironic is the Howard Stern today is a shell of his former self.

How many fans and who *exactly* is trying to “cancel” the Undertaker? If people are voicing their reaction to his involvement with the Kanyon/Boy George angle by voicing their disappointment or disproval or whatever, honestly…who gives a fuck? It’s free speech. Ditto the Cena and Flair Howard Stern stuff. I guarantee you none of those dudes careers are destroyed because, what, a few *hundred* to maybe a few *thousand* people voiced a negative reaction to the controversy online out of millions? In a roundabout way you’re boogeymanning and demonizing what essentially amounts to *other* people just expressing their disavowal/disproval and disagreeing with you. Not everybody has to agree and have the same reaction to things as you do.

@@cjaquilino Pretty much this. Backstage politics can ruin the careers of perfectly fine wrestlers. You have people like Orlando Jordan (one of the most mediocre WWE wrestlers) win the US title the same year Kanyon, Ultimo Dragon and Rhyno got fired. There are really weird backstage unwritten rules that decide your career, even when you're good at your job and try your best. And being a WCW guy who got hurt at the worst possible time, gets jobbers over and got hurt again while recovering from an injury won't get you far in WWE.

@DeadmanInc336 2 года назад
Man, do I wish Kanyon would have hung on just a little bit longer. Just long enough to get proper help for his mental illness. But also more importantly just to see how much society has changed and how being gay is waaaaaaay more accepted today than it was back then. Sure, it still has some work to do. But it has improved by leaps and bounds compared to back then. Nobody should have to suffer or take their life over mental health or self acceptance. I wonder if Chris just didn't really have anyone to talk to that he could confide in over his issues.
@plumgirl1000
@plumgirl1000 2 года назад
I remember that DDP said in the episode the last time he saw Kanyon (roughly a week and a half before he died) he looked at him and he could tell he wasn’t gonna be around for much longer and James Mitchell said he started calling Chris multiple times a day for around two weeks and he just wouldn’t answer his phone and the reason they found his body that day was that Chris’s younger brother Ken became concerned because apparently Chris had stopped answering his phone calls about a day or so before and given his history of suicide attempts went over to his apartment to check on him and found him dead (not only did he have a mix of antidepressants and bipolar medication in his system) but the medical examiner said that he had been dead at least 12 hours prior to his body being found on April 2nd around 6:00 a.m. local time so as much as it sucks that he’s gone I don’t think anything short of locking him in a mental hospital would’ve stopped him from killing himself and even then I’m sure he would’ve found some way to do it
