I think about how I was looking up book reviews for months maybe years before I came across this channel. Everything changed that day. My tv viewing habits , my interests, my reading schedule, my bookish views and my world / life views. To say this channel can be influential in one’s life is an understatement.
Nope. Under thirty five and have not gone down the Hitchens rabbit hole. Not lying either. I've definitely gone way down the Steve rabbit hole though. A channel so good, that it promotes dedicated reading, whist at the same time, steals you away from all the possible time in which to do so. I even find myself completing your sentences at times. Definitely a rabbit hole.........HELP!
Wow, i like your take on this tag, Steve! I'd previously thought of rabbit holes as just a fevered period of interest. When i was a child (like everyone else) I had a dinosaur phase. I LOVED dinosaurs. Then I was obsessed with ancient Egypt, then it was the stories behind constellations... those were certainly quite fun rabbit holes. 😊
I have 2 rabbit holes that I no longer waste time on. Creationist videos that try to debunk evolution, usually by deliberately misrepresenting it or just not understanding it. And flat earthers and moon landing deniers. I've recognised how much these videos fill me with a dread at the thought that knowledge might not win in the end.
Oh, I agree - the problem with creationists and flat earthers is exactly the same (understandably, since all flat earthers must perforce be creationists) is that they're SO derivative; all they ever do is repeat the same tired ten 'arguments'
You might want to check out Fredrik Knudsen's youtube channel- he makes a series called "Down the Rabbit Hole" that I suspect you would find interesting. It's not all about grand conspiracies, mostly just things he considers weird, but it is fun to watch.
I am far from being a young man but I have gone down the Christopher Hitchens rabbit hole. It hasn't developed into homophobia, transphobia or islamophobia in my case, but not being a young man, my views on such things were already well developed by the time I discovered Hitchens. I like to watch Hitchens for his rhetorical eloquence. I expect that is what attracts young men, too - and perhaps a certain macho bravura (serious drinking and serious argument). By the way, I watch some atheist community videos but I have noticed none of the infighting you mention. Maybe I have not explored enough - maybe I shouldn't. I take what I want and turn away if I see anything cruel.
Well, when I talk about the atheist community, I'm not talking about fairly well-behaved RU-vidrs like Matt Dillahunty, or Genetically Modified Skeptic, or the great Aron Ra - I'm talking about channels that started out atheist-themed (and would still call themselves that) but have since degenerated into the worst people on the Internet - channels like Thunderfoot or Atheism is Unstoppable.

It's strange to suggest that Hitchens gave rise to an increase in homophobia or transphobia - I see no evidence of that - but he wore the accusation of Islamophobia like a badge of pride.
As you learned, there are TONS of inconsistencies with the entire Cobain situation. Conspiracy theories are fun to watch, but hard to believe, but I really think the Cobain one has merit to it. Something just doesn't add up with the entire case once you look at all the evidence.
For me, the key problem was the fact that the overdose he allegedly gave himself before setting up the shotgun and pulling the trigger would have instantly incapacitated him. He couldn't have picked up the gun, much less carefully positioned it and pulled the trigger - but an over-the-top overdose is exactly what somebody in his wife's employ would have done, since she would have told them about the overdose he'd just recently managed to survive ...
