Can I make a suggestion for celebrating your first Christmas in NZ? Plant a Pohutakawa tree. We call it the New Zealand Christmas tree because it has dark green foliage and bright red flowers that bloom around Christmas. It will be so awesome in years to come to look at it blooming every year and remember that you planted it your first Christmas here.

Nice idea but this probably will be a difficult given their location. Pohutakawa have climatic tolerances, preferring warm and coastal areas. Other Metrosideros spp. like Northern Rata will probably be more ideal.
@Tom_McMurtry
@Tom_McMurtry 2 года назад
@@TheRiceRambo2 It's warm enough where they are now! But historically their range didn't go down past Gisborne (or somewhere around there), although without human settlement post the ice age it probably would have crept down that far when there was a continuous track of forest and birdlife to help distribute them! So it is now warm enough, hence why planting isn wellington do well. But it is not their natural location.

I can't wait to watch this, but I may start sobbing. My husband and I moved our family from Tennessee to Ecuador four months ago and I'm struggling so hard to find a place and a tribe and any sense of friendship! It was absolutely the right thing to do, a dream come true, but it's incredibly hard.

Please stick in there Elizabeth, give yourself some time to adjust it’s a massive wrench and tricky to find the right tribe 🙏🏽💗🦅 my sister moved to Portugal after driving round Europe for three years, in a camper van to begin with then sis became pregnant 💗 they now have restored a fabulous house there in the countryside near to Spain, their daughter has learning difficulties and my sis learned Portuguese very quickly but both of them found it hard to make friends with the natives behind the school gate tho they’re very loving and open there but very right with family otherwise, but they have good pals but most are of other nationalities. But gee whiz the pain my sister went thro settling in, she felt it would be easier in England for her daughter too yet knew her husband wouldn’t ever go back so it caused pressure in their relationship but after all this they got thorough it and have the strongest relationship of any couple I know, their daughter has grown to be an amazing young woman of 20, very happy and loving, their son is a ray of sunshine. They have become more self sufficient esp the last two years with more land cultivated, olive harvest etc and an amazing old friend a Portuguese man who worked in Germany most of his life, so he’s unusual really and like a God send in their lives. Be gentle on yourself Elizabeth, get grounded as much as possible, be in gratitude , even gently encourage your mind to go the way of positive thought as soon as you see the heavy stuff, cry, let it out! Don’t be in pain! 🙏🏽💗 with much love from the rainy Scottish Highlands 🦅🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🐾

Hey Elizabeth!! I'm from Ecuador. I love Carrie's videos, she's great but I think that a lot of us watch her very intently especially in this phase of her life because we can also relate. I have loved in a couple of different countries growing up and now my boyfriend and I moved to Portugal! It was our dream, like yours was to go to Ecuador!! If you'd like I can give you some tips about the country. My parents eventually moved back to Ecuador and now they live in Cuenca!! It's a nice place to live in my opinion and the city is really cute. Ecuadoreans are nice, warm people. I guess like a lot of Latin people, but I know it can be difficult to make friends with the locals. That happens everywhere. I think just give it time and don't be afraid to approach the locals. When I am there and walk around and see expats I have the impression some are just a bit shy, of course the language barrier doesn't help. But a lot of people nowadays will know some English. Good luck! I send you and your family a big hug!

Your videos bring me back to earth and help me realize I'm not alone! I moved to New Zealand 2.5 years ago and I'm still struggling to find peace and connection with being here. We celebrate every little thing every chance we get. In fact, I'm about to bake a pecan pie and pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. It's a hard process and harder as introverts in a small insular town. I found your channel before your move to NZ through gardening videos and the vagabrothers channel and am so glad for you that you're happier here!

You and Alex are doing such a phenomenal job and make a wonderful team. This mom had tears in her eyes when you talked about missing yours and I'm sure your mom misses you more than she can say too. I totally agree that it takes time to build meaningful connections in a new place. I moved to a new city a few years ago and didn't know anyone, and I'd say it's taken until now to build really close friendships. It also takes work, and courage; recently I started being a lot more proactive in creating a community, and it was scary stepping out of my introvert comfort zone, but it's been so worthwhile!

Hi Carrie, I am a Czech living in Jamaica and I can totally relate to the feeling of celebrating Christmas in the summer...I'm used to cold weather and snow in Europe and last year was the first to be both away from my family and celebrate Christmas while sweating in the tropics 😅 my Jamaican husband made it all worthwhile but the truth is I wasn't in the Christmas spirit and we watched the Pirates of the Caribbean instead of festive movies (and I didn't mind it at all) 😊 I love your videos, they bring peace to my life 🙏🏻 and I found you thanks to Ingrid Nilsen's channel some years ago and I've watched your content ever since 😍

HI Carrie, I lived overseas in Asia in a large NZ military community, this never stopped us from celebrating our own festivities also in Australia the NZers get together for Waitangi Day as did my friends who were in London, UK. There is no reason why you can not have your own Thanks Giving and start sharing this celebrations with your NZ friends or attract some ex-pat Americans. Similar to another podcast Chateau Diaries, Stephanie celebrates and have so many people to share with (ok most are paying chateau guests) BUT what I am saying is there is not reason why you can not continue to celebrate no matter what country you currently reside in .

Yes my American friends celebrate thanksgiving and I always send them a happy thanksgiving text. They have a flagpole and fly the American flag sometimes (and NZ flag at other times) . I sometimes think we should be more patriotic here - we downplay it a bit too much.

NZ Summers are a different breed... they are roasters even though the temperature isn't high, because of the lack of ozone the sun is way more harsh.I was wearing sweatpants in Houston at 40 degrees but as soon as summer hits here Im dead hahah .... OH and also be ready for the humidity!!
@ITTechHead
@ITTechHead 2 года назад
The ozone hole occurs over Antarctica & which would sometimes affect NZ, it only occurs in spring. The ozone hole is no longer a problem for NZ because of the banning of CFC's. The NZ sun in summer feels stronger because of the population free atmosphere & the earth is closer to the sun in the southern hemisphere summer (whereas the northern hemisphere summer the earth is farther from the sun)

I’m from Illinois and I found your channel while doing a search on gardening over the Summer as my husband and I bought our first home in January 2021 and we have a pretty big garden that had already been started by the previous owners and I want to keep it up. I did great with my tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers and even got a couple of watermelons but we have to set the garden up better and keep the animals out. I’m a newbie in gardening but I love it. New Zealand's International border situation is changing, MIQ has already been reduced to 7 days. Even with the covid situation in Auckland , MIQ has remained in place because 2/3rd's of NZ was still covid free (Auckland's hard border mostly protecting rest of NZ ) while vaccination rate reaches a high level. Within the first 2 months of next year, you will be able to travel international & return with no MIQ, instead a few days home isolation.

Morena Carrie. I know California is not but in NZ it's a different hot. There's not much humidity so the heat comes directly from the sun and there's a hole in the ozone layer above NZ. You'll notice we are now getting 3 or 4 nice warm days in a row and all of a sudden you will realise that there hasn't been any significant rain if any at all for two months. December through March there will be very little rain. Arohanui. P.S.Your property is looking better every time you guys upload a video. It must be so satisfying

I moved from New Zealand to Canada and there were several culture shocks for me - to get used to - mostly similar to what Carrie is experiencing. It took me 2 years to get used to driving on the "wrong" side of the road. It also took me 2 years to get used to the new currency - Dimes, Nickels, Quarters etc - NZ does not have those. Canadian coins were different sizes from NZ coins. Canada also has loonies and toonies - which are the $1 and $2 dollar coins. Those were the two biggest adjustments I had to make, Been here in Canada for 20 years and this is my home now!!!

I'm from the Netherlands, but have lived in Australia for almost 7 years now. I never got used to Christmas in summer haha, I went back for Christmas once, just before covid hit, which was great. This will be my first Christmas with my boyfriend, so that might make things a bit different too :) Fun fact when I met him, he told me one day (when he retires) he wants to get some land and start a small farm, well let's say I now moved that plan forward to 5-10 years from now haha (he's 32, I'm 29). I got him to watch The Biggest Little Farm after I saw you mention it in one of your videos, and it's now his favourite thing (Kiss the Ground) was his favourite before this. We now live in a 4 bedroom house in the suburbs, which a fairly big backyard, so we're going to start on a smaller scale now and hopefully in the next few years get some land and expand it.

I’m not surprised to hear you say you never got to really know your neighbours in LA. I had the same problem living in Melbourne- a city with a population bigger than the whole of NZ. It was near impossible to form friendships with anyone. Everyone is running around working, trying to survive the rat race that they just don’t have time to commit to new friendships. Coming home to New Zealand just before Covid has been refreshing. We had great neighbours when living in Hamilton, and we are blessed to have great neighbours now that we have moved to our off the grid lifestyle block up here in the Hokianga Northland. For example; l broke my wrist last week and required surgery. I was annoyed with myself as I had just started spraying and line trimming around the property. After all the spring rain our property was looking very overgrown. Next thing the neighbours arrived and did most of my work for me. The place looks nice and tidy again. Most Kiwis still have that community spirit, where you look out for each other.

I think your experience in LA is common in big U.S. cities at least. I live in Chicago and in basically every apartment/home I've lived in, I never really knew my neighbors. I've lived here for a long time and finished university 5 years ago. I've made new friendships since, but find it's hard to make new, really close friendships (maybe unless you are part of an organization or do an activity weekly).

How big of a property have you got.?? I don't believe you said that,!!!! " Wait it out " The person asked you a question, that this person had moved abroad, they are lonely and struggling, and your #1 Tip is to "wait it out." It takes time, wait it out for a year. What the hell were you thinking girl. There are many places around the world ( I know there in every town in New Zealand ) Places where others who have moved to that area get together for coffee ? Tea to meet and chat.. As for your move here there will be many things over the first 5 years you will compare with the States. Christmas In Summer. that takes some getting used to my wife still says..

The Gospel of salvation of our souls: 💜💕❤️❤️💕💕❤️📖✝️🕎💡💡❤️❤️💞💜💕For what I received I passed on to you as of [first importance]: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time,

Dear God💗❤️💗💞🙏in heaven, I come to you in the name of Jesus. I acknowledge to You that I am a sinner, and I am sorry for my sins and the , life that I have lived; I need your forgiveness. I believe that your only begotten Son Jesus Christ shed His precious blood on the cross at Calvary and died for my sins, and I am now willing to turn from my sin. You said in the bible that if we confess the Lord our God and believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead, we shall be saved. Right now I confess Jesus as my Lord. With my heart, I believe that God raised Jesus from the dead. This very moment I accept Jesus Christ as my own personal Savior and according to His Word, right now I am saved. Amen.

From time to time, I will do sponsorships with companies I believe in and will continue to turn down the offers from the ones I don’t see fit. It’s sad that you’re disappointed in me for getting the opportunity to work with a brand I love instead of being proud and supportive. I bring you content every week for free but you believe I shouldn’t make any money from my hard work. That’s sad.
