Some of the Nurses behave that way because they believe tge nursing students are going to be watching everything the nurse does and reporting it to their instructor .Ex: reporting the nurse not Washing hands and just using sanitizer or not doing a med exactly on time or checking the patient ID band. Nursing school is an ideal atmosphere not reality but as a student you only know the ideal way not the rush and demand. The best nurses will be smiling when students come because they see the future and they also know if they are wise this student is going to help me today. I do you do and that's the best one to be with because you will actually learn. Nursing is very demanding and at the end of the day everything is the Nurses fault. Dietary , housekeeping , the doc not being available , a bath being late , it's raining . Everything but you do it with a smile and compassion.

I remember when I was first being trained on the job as a cna, the cnas wouldn't be rude but I could tell they were annoyed. As a cna that has been working for almost 3 years, i completely get it. Students get in your way and slow you down. Most people in healthcare have a routine set up and having to stop and tell a student what to do in the middle of your routine is annoying and draining. That being said, they should still be nice to you regardless. Being rude and all that is unnecessary and unprofessional.

Aww I'm sorry to hear some students have had bad experiences following nurse on the floor. I work in the ICU now and when I had students on the floor, yes it requires a little extra effort and patience but it really is the circle of life and everyone was a student once. I always remember that and so I took students on enthusiastically. I hope you and your fellow students remember this and can provide good experiences for your future nurses. And so true you guys really are helpful. Don't let the downers get you down!

On paperwork: welcome to nursing. As a nurse, you do more documentation than spending time at the bedside. It’s sad that we have to spend so much time double and triple charting in order to validate the things that we do that you don’t have much time to spend with the patients....

I bought actual drug cards printed and purchased three other pharmacology books....its such a waste of time like let me study the books for patient care and study the current cards I have. They say it's to learn "time management " but in a world where a computer is everything and tests matter I think it's pointless. Especially since I can't make my hand write faster smh

When I started my prerequisites I never intended to get amazing grades but my first semester I got all A’s. I started realizing how competitive getting into nursing school was so I kept striving to get A’s. I have had so many mental breakdowns and feeling like I wasn’t good enough. I was doing bad in Anatomy and Physiology I and I had to drop the class. When I took it again I tried so much harder but it was still so draining and I felt terrible when I got a bad exam grade. This makes me scared for actual nursing classes :-( I’m happy to still have a 4.0 and almost done with my prerequisites but I’m just mentally and physically drained. I cannot imagine nursing school

I just discovered your videos. This all brings me back to my days as a nursing student and I definitely agree with a lot of the things you mentioned. Now on the other side of things with my RN, I can at least touch one of these topics with a bit more understanding. RNs who are bad to students -- shame on them, because the reality is, we will one day take care of them if they ever become in patient, or outpatient for the matter (I'm an FNP student). It's nice to learn from nurses who care about the next generation of professionals. However, that said, I also understand why some nurses run the other way. Some nursing students like to be independent, and in many ways, that's great. But some students are know it alls, and these are the ones that make mistakes. Like you, I had a REALLY bad nurse in peds, and I'm like, DUDE, care for your patients, what did I ever do to you? type attitude. Then I learned a bit later on in my preceptorship, that she did have a student, and she doesn't take students outside of preceptorship because a student who was with her and stopped an IV that had been running a course of chemo treatment without letting the nurse know. She went through a lot for that and her license was on the line. I share this story because I understood why she was the way she was. My goal is to have that opportunity to precept students and allow them to do things, but if they do something, even if it's getting juice, I ask students to let me know and to never do a med pass without me. Patient safety is always first, and I want students to learn, but not at the cost of my license that I worked so hard for. Just some insight. ;) Please don't take any offense to this, it's just something I'm now understanding on the other side of things.
@DailyDoseofNursing
@DailyDoseofNursing 5 лет назад
Thank you for this comment! I love to get responses like this, especially from nurses to get the other side of the story. It puts into perspective that we (as students) also have to take it easy on our nurses! I never take offense to nurses that don’t want me- I’ll just ask them if they need the day away from a student and that I wouldn’t mind changing to a different nurse. It’s the nurses that treat their patients badly that really get to me. Thank you for your input I really enjoyed reading it and I’m sure other students will too!!

During my first labor/birth, they asked if I would allow a nursing student into the room. It was a male student and I thought about saying no, but SO GLAD I didn't. The nurse he was shadowing had an impossible time getting the IV needle in a vein. He spoke up eventually and offered a suggestion on technique and thankfully she tried it and got it instantly! Turns out he was an EMT and had tons of experience administering IVs.

I am in Nursing school, this is our 4th week of clinicals and I am SOOO stressed out! Every single thing you said I can already relate too! I would like to add one thing though, ontop of having awful nurses who hate students, having a really mean preceptor ontop of that isn't fun either. Her response to me asking her what to do about my assigned nurse not wanting a student, is that I have to tough it out and that I need to work a lot harder. I agree that learning to work with people who do not like you is a necessity especially in healthcare, but I also think there where a lot better responses she could have chosen. I cant force someone to teach me. I ended up sharing a nurse with another class mate, and this nurse LOVES to teach! So it worked out.

It’s ridiculous how much they try to stray people away!! It just ended up motivating me more honestly. If you’re planning on retaking classes I would re-assess what went wrong the first time you took it! I’d probably move to the front of the class so you can concentrate more on the material, watch YT videos (this is my fav way to grasp material), you can always find practice questions online for extra practice, make friends in the class to study with, etc. I feel like I always kinda know where I went wrong the first time I took a class and I try to fix it to kill it the second time. 😊

I recently started adult health one clinical and this video makes me feel more validated about how I felt with my first nurse. She wanted nothing to do with the other student and myself included. She assumed we knew what she does. I know we are a guest, and lucky to be following the nurses yet I felt terrified to even ask questions. Going into my second clinical this upcoming Saturday I want to run away from her and find someone else and go solo to get the best hands-on experience. I felt useless and just roamed around the rehabilitation site, so we aren't switching floors, ill see her every Saturday. Other students with prior experiences are doing skills that are far more than mine, so yes It's discouraging and I judge myself for not having prior experience in this field/knowledge. I don't want to be in that toxic competition mode with anyone other than myself to be better but I know it will all work out. I get that nurses are overworked, and not everyone wants that extra burden of teaching students

hii fellow bts stan, lol. im in highschool going to be a junior and im reallyyy confused on what happens right after highschool. we cant go straight to nurse school because we need the pre required class. how long does that take, is it only about year or less?? i know it takes 4 years after highschool to become a nurse, and 2-3 of those years are spent at nurse school. is the “freshman” part of this journey just get the pre required courses and then sophomore- senior ur in nursing school?? sorry if this didn’t make much sense😖
@lifeisrosyyy
@lifeisrosyyy 3 года назад
kiana heyy I’m so sorry, I’m late at responding! But what I did after graduating from high school is I went to a community college for two years to complete all my pre requisite courses such as anatomy, microbio, history and calculus. I spoke with my counselor and she helped me come up with a plan during my time at that college. She told me all the courses that I needed to take to transfer to a university and apply for their program. I strongly recommend attending a community college to complete your prerequisite courses. The tuition is so much cheaper and you most likely won’t spend any of your own money because financial aid will cover the costs. So if you can, go to a community college, get your associates (2 year degree), then apply to the university nursing program that you want to go to :) good luck!!
@lifeisrosyyy
@lifeisrosyyy 3 года назад
kiana and by the way, your freshman and sophomore year of college is the two years you will spend taking your prerequisite courses. Once you enter a nursing program, you will complete your junior and senior year.

You have to remember that these patients are scared and in their most vulnerable moments. Even though us students are knowledgeable and everything is fresh, it may just make them feel better to know that a “professional” is taking care of them. Especially parents who’s children are sick. Those children are their greatest love and they want the experienced nurse taking care of them.

Thanks for your insights. Remember not everybody decide to go into healthcare because of a calling but to get a paycheck. Therefore, their attitude reflects on their actions.

I’m glad I watched this video bc I’m planning to go to nursing school and in my family/extended family there are a ton of nurses. my one aunt who is a nurse isn’t the nicest but thankfully my sister in law is a great example of what a nurse is suppose to be. there’s also a ton of sm buz recently about nurses making vids about patients faking symptoms etc and the way they go about that is very disheartening. To hear nurses not wanting other student nurses shadowing them is so discouraging and really sad. Is it not bc they want to be held accountable or what? What are they afraid of? Are you suppose to have great bedside manner and treat people w kindness and patience? It’s almost like they are in the wrong profession. I’ve gone to the ER where male nurses were really mean and short with me while I’m scared and didn’t know what was going on. Anyway thanks for this video

I get the not wanting a student nurse as a patient because when I was at the hospital when I was 6 for Dengue fever, the student nurse had to at least take 2 tries every single time to take my blood for glucose levels. It was very frustrating getting pricked 20 times instead of 10 😐

I am so glad I found ur channel! Im gonna start nursing in September, and I love to watch videos like yours to prepare. BUT i am SO confused about how tough it is to get in nursing school where you are from. Here (the netherlands) EVERYONE will get in nursing school, you just need a certain high school diploma. They dont check grades, they dont check your CV, nothing. The only thing they do is that you have to take a standart little test with some maths, and spelling etc, and based of that result, they will advice you if nursing school is something for you or not. They cant refuse you. bamboozled.

How do you avoid being burned out in nursing school because lately I feel really unmotivated. For example I noticed that in clinical I used to go above and beyond for my patients but now I just make sure to do what's required and I now have the feeling of wanting to leave my clinical site just when I get there. Any helpful tips on how to stay motivated?
@DailyDoseofNursing
@DailyDoseofNursing 5 лет назад
I think reminding yourself why you started is really important. Having a vision board. Remembering every time you step in the hospital how YOU would want to be treated and how you would want your mom or your loved one to be treated especially in their time of need. Remembering that patients in the hospital are people that are weak, and not feeling at their best. Its hard, but even writing it down before you go into the hospital or having a journal is great. I do that now because I don’t ever want to get burnt out and those are habits I also want to carry when I become a nurse!

If your getting “burned” out and you haven’t finished nursing school I would reconsider if nursing for you.

The comments about “considering if nursing is for you” is uncalled for. As a nursing student I can relate to feeling unmotivated. Im in my second semester and you do feel burned out 12-13 weeks into the semester. Sometimes you just want to be done already and catch a break. It’s a very hard program to keep up with and there are days where you will feel as if you want to give up. Everyone has those days but that doesn’t mean “nursing isn’t for you”. Just find motivation to keep going and remember why you started! That’s all I can say about that. Good luck finishing the program Brian!

Everyone has those moments when they are so stressed and tired from nursing school! Self care is really important to practice for this reason! Try to focus on yourself whenever you can do you can be at your best for your patients! It’s hard sometimes but keep going, you got this!
@jenniferlopez2850
@jenniferlopez2850 4 года назад
Do not listen to the comments about “nursing is not for you” because that’s a lie. You are ALLOWED to feel unmotivated you are ALLOWED to be stressed. Every human is going to go through this. Just remind yourself WHY you’re doing this & think of the end game. You can do it, I promise

I'm pre-nursing and this was a good video. I will admit that when I had my DVT and had to get my blood drawn every week I would not let the student draw my blood. Also, I recently had an IUD inserted and the student messed up and hurt me. I know everyone has to learn though, but they ain't learning on me 😉

I must of been lucky or maybe this was meant to be, but I got in on the first try. Here were the requirements: GPA from another school (transfer) I had a 3.06, entrance exam was the HSRT needed a 72 I got a 76, and last Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2, had to have a C or better I had A’s… I’m very thankful that I get to start my ADN program in the fall.

Hey girl!! I have sooo many different ways of studying. I use concept maps (especially for my med-surg semester), LOADS of practice questions (especially your first semester), I watch YT videos (registerednurseRN) and I feel like all 3 of those ways involve different ways of learning: auditory, visual and hands-on so I grasp it really well!! Really depends on your learning style but honestly I try to incorporate all 3 and of course trying to write down notes is key, but given sometimes you just don’t have time! Hope this helps and congrats on starting! 💕

Lol when i was in nursing school, my professor had me go find a nurse that he had assign me to. when i got to her, she told me to stand in the hallway and wait for her while she had to go get "water" and i literally didn't see for like like 15 minutes so i went to my professor and i had told him she never came back for me and he told me to still wait for her... i spent another 10-15 minutes waiting for her and when i had enough standing in the hallway, i went looking for her and she literally just kept ignoring me. i went back to my professor and told him and he finally switched me to another nurse.
