From dirt-poor rural village to bustling tourist hot spot in less than ten years. With the help of their resident dragon…
Longshen County - a vast region of layered rice terraces that curl around Longji (the Dragon's Backbone) mountain to its summit. For almost a thousand years ethnic Chinese farmers have labored here in obscurity, climbing the steep mountain slopes to sow and harvest their rice.
Then, less than 15 years ago, the area was discovered by the tourist industry. They came to see the stunning natural beauty of the Dragon Terraces. The locals began building lodgings and carrying bags. Since then Longji has become a study of the good - and bad - of rapid development.
The Dragon's Backbone still isn't easy to get to but if you're willing to make the trek - and the steep hike up to the mountaintop - you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views, stunning hikes, emerald fields so green it makes your eyes hurt, and the chance to get to know China's rural Yao and Zhuang minorities. It's worth the trip.
