This is a video response to the recent video by ‪@blacklodgegames‬ linked below, and a continuation of what it suggests. It connects their recent metaphor of RPG as Soap Opera to our ongoing discussions on states of play (In-character and Out-of-Character), and vectors of play (how we play, both in and out of character), while leaving the notion of Story for another time. It has a tip to further an exploration of in-character gaming and a recommendation to help speed your journey~

"Unity of perspective".... excellent way to describe this. See the world and interact with the world, and the GM, from one perspective, the character's perspective.

Part of me briefly thinks, “oh what a privilege/luxury to have these choices of refining play style, while most avid players are simply stretching and scraping to play at all, and casuals are simply flirting with whither RPGs are the hobby they want to engage with this month or no” And then I recall, it is better to be conscious of what one is seeking than heedless

One thing at a time, one after the other. First, find a group you enjoy and can play with. After that is when it becomes possible to explore and develop~

Solid advice as always. With NPCs, I like to think about their simple wants and motivations. The server in the tavern who acts nice to get more tips, but is tired and can't wait for her shift to end. Most NPCs don't need more depth than that to feel alive.

I take a step pushing the boulder, and then I watch a video or talk to you and it is as though a friend is tapping me on the shoulder to point out how much higher the path goes and another way to try pushing the rock, not necessarily better, only different. Yet they all make me happy. I will never forget how you taught the living world to me practically. SLA industries, 3 BPN choices that were 3 perspectives/locations around the same thing happening in Mort, and that felt awesome realizing that we would have been in that sewer when Helical Hell fell down, but instead we watched it live from the street.

Astute and wise, as ever. I didn’t gave too much a thought on the shock topic of the week, but now that the gears are engaged, I would say « soap opera » might be a lens, like comedy, horror, drama, and other meta-qualities, one group may add in front of the aperture. In the end, does the Tchekov’s piece has to fire?
