I've just seen it in a marvelous 4k restoration at Venice Film Festival. Greenaway in person presented the movie before the screening. What a masterpiece!

Well, nothing can be “very” unique. It’s either unique or not. OMG I’ve turned into one of the characters...

Best film of all time. It’s magnificent. Superb. Insane. Delightful. Appalling. Funny. Horrific. Puzzling. Beautiful - so, so beautiful.

Once asked to choose my favourite 3 films of all time, I named this in 3rd place, 2nd to Take care of your scarf, Tatjana, and 1st to Tokyo Story.

The Draughtsman's Contract is my favourite film of all time. I love that Peter Greenaway drew those actual pictures. I love all the allegory and the underlying themes. Nyman's score is beautiful. Thanks so much for reviewing this; it is great and I have just subscribed to your channel.

I changed the way I walked after obsessing over the sly cool of Higgins' performance when it first came out. Louise-Lambert's speech to Higgins still blows my head off. Where is writing like this?

It certainly is one of my top five. I remember, on its theatrical release, *nobody* talked about anything else at dinner parties for at least a month. Every time I watch it, I get something new.

@@jeffhalmos7981 Very late to the party, I saw your comment this evening. I would love to see the original version. I like the use of the pomegranate she used in her speech, very clever.

@@bb2866 Thats impressive 😊, it’s a fabulous film. I wanted to review it but it is difficult to get views and it’s rather niche. I think it approves upon every watch. Maybe I shall review it 😀.

Loved the cook the thief his wife and her lover and I saw this afterwards and I loved it almost just as much. Really want to watch the rest of his filmography

I would recommend Belly of an Architect next. A Zed and Two Noughts is a bit too heavy in terms of his style. I think Greenaway himself said on the DVD that if he could remake any one of his films it would be Zed. Drowning By Numbers is excellent too!

i think if you liked the Cook, The Thief, His Wife and her Lover you would love a Zed and Two Noughts. Its brilliant and intense and not for the faint hearted but either is The Cook, The Thief, The Wife and Her Lover. I found both films quite moving, which is not always the response people have to Greenaway. Also Prospero's Books, which is Greenaway's take on The Tempest, is absolutely splendid. It has John Gielgud playing Prospero so that is a huge bonus. Its it an artwork come alive. I agree with the other comments too. The Belly of the Architect and Drowning By Numbers are well worth seeing. I tried to watch The Baby of Macron but that was too much even for me.

I love Drowning by numbers. This and The cook the Thief always were my favorites. Baby of Macob for some reason I watched and rewatched a few times in a short period of time. Prospero's book was the most difficult one for me to watch. I wouldn't recommend it if you are not a big fan of the direftor.

Thanks for this review. Yesterday I watched this film at the BFI Southbank, the first time I had watched it since the 1990s. A stunning film in its visual beauty, beguiling and witty story, and great music.

An almost diabolically clever murder mystery placed in a picturesque setting that highlights the cruelty of the plot. One of the best British films of that era.

How aristocracy manages to hold their power under any circumstances, and far beyond common people's capability of imagination. Beautifully written and shot, perfect music score, perfect photography, nailed characters, an all time masterpiece.

I saw this film when i was 14 or 15 years old it came one late night in the TV. And what i remember the most was this pervert silver painted man runing around naked, playing living statue, pi**ing into a well or fountain, and a group of people clubbing someone to death and throwing the victim into the well. 20 years later im talking with my BFF on the phone and i somehow mentioned that filmscene with the silver perv to her, not eaven remembering the films name and she was like: OMG, THE SILVER PERV!!!!!! YOU SAW THAT FILM TOO!!!!!!!!!!! Well as it seems we got simulaniously traumatized, watching the same film at the same time and never told eachother because it was just to embharrassing back then... 😂😂😂

Are you talking about aristocracy, titles, royalty etc? If you are then you should realize that the elite in nations such as the US and China are just the modern day equivalent of those things; however without the elegance and class.
