Thats not what I took from this scene. Gertrude was feeling sorry for herself cos William didn't notice her but he noticed Tilly. This scene was supposed to show Gertrude as an "ugly duckling" then when Tilly does the dress for her and she has her makeover and marries William she then shows her true colours as a rotten bitch, it goes to show you can make a person look pretty but regardless they're still ugly and rotten on the inside Tilly really does do amazing work regardless of how awful they are on the inside she can make them look amazing on the outside
During this time, I think besides taking the first steps to proving her innocence, Tilly actually harboured a faint, perhaps self-deluding, ghost of a hope that she and Gertrude could become good friends. One look at Gertrude’s “Cinderella” and wedding gowns respectively is all it took to know the sincere effort and painstaking diligence Tilly had put in, and I honestly believe Tilly had also gone as far as to advise her with how to dress her hair, the right jewellery to adorn herself with, perfume, etc. It is truly unfortunate that, at the end of the day, while Gertrude Pratt’s physical appearance could be altered by Tilly’s extraordinary talents, her insides could not, and they were as ugly and filthy as the rest of the townspeople were, but still…Tilly ultimately did avenge herself successfully, and I dare say that Gertrude Pratt did not like her serving of karma at all. The way she snapped at and even blackmailed her mother-in-law, the look on her face when she returned to find the town burned down…😂
I think Gertrude's main issue with Tilly is that William remarked how beautiful she was and William only noticed Gertrude after her makeover but it must sting knowing William noticed Tilly who everyone looks down on but never glanced at Gertrude so she sees Tilly as comeptition even though Tilly never showed any interest
I like this movie, compared to high school teen movies where characters get a makeover and change for the better, this movie makes characters (who were bitchy all along) show their true colors when they get a makeover.
Great film..... but astounding Dialogue error, about 30 minutes in. Mad Molly (Judy Davis)(mother of 'Tilley') is on the porch, reminiscing with the just-returned-from-Paris Tilley (Excellent Kate Winslet). Molly says something sad, at which Tilley looks wistfully down , saying, "I lost a child once...." (Presumably in Paris/while away all these years). Mad Molly immediately shoots back, "....what, your first victim, was it!?". ~~~ Wow... say what???? Surely the poking-and-prodding point was to say: "What, your SECond victim, was it?" ~ What a huge error. How did this get past the actors, the director, the script supervisor, the edit.... dozens of people failed to catch that?
Molly was probably being sarcastic watch the film again and you'll see how sarcastic she is like at the football match when she tells the chemist "how's your wife? I remember she kept bumping into doors" she was being sarcastic and basically telling him look down on me all you want but I know you used to beat your wife up. Or the wedding scene where she stops Pettymen trying his tricks with the younger girls she threatens to humiliate him and sarcastically says "still up to your old tricks are ya" its ironic they call her Mad Molly despite the fact she went off her head when Tilly was sent away she's still very shrewd and can see through all the townspeople like glass it was Molly who orchestrated the revenge of Tilly doing the costumes of the neighbouring town and she gave Tilly the strength to actually do worse to them by burning the town. I loved Molly's character Judy Davis deserved an oscar nod for her protrayl of Molly she did a fanstic job
