I love this movie, the cinematography, the story and the strong, badass character of the protagonist!

Some interesting observations. Could have made a reference to the name of the place. Dungatar: 'Dung' being animal excrement - it was a "shitty" place to live. 'tar' - a black, sticky substance. A place of entrapment, a dark depressing place where people were 'stuck' to live unfulfilled lives. The name is basically when big metaphor.

I had a similar thought, but one that's a bit sillier. When I heard them pronounce the name, I thought it was something along the lines of dung attire and Tilly had come there to give people *attire* that was, well, not shitty.

Awesome Video! Only thing you missed was at the ending the rival town's play performed is three little maids. This play is about three women competing with a rival group of three women for the love of three men. The three little maids aren't as pretty or fashionable as the rival three women, but in the end win over the rival women because of their freshness and good nature. Showing the ideology of inside beauty over outside beauty. The rival town cared more about inside beauty and was spared, but dungatar like in the play was punished as they only cared about their outward appearances.

Are you sure about that play? The song seems to definitely be "Three Little Maids" from Gilbert and Sullivan's Mikado. Are you saying that the song itself could be based on something else? The song is generally just an introduction to the characters, particularly Yum Yum, the ingenue. But the analysis is interesting.

The song "three little maids" is from The Mikado and includes the line "Nobody's safe, 'cause we care for none". There is no theme of inner and outer beauty in The Mikado. It satirises power, law and bureaucrats and shows the absurdity of capital punishmemt.

Very well explained / narrated, thank you. It took the sting out of the trauma I had from it. The film was not a happy one~ and I didn't like it. But the costumes, cinematography, acting, and colour saturation were superb.

I only watched this last night for the first time, having never even heard of it. It's a brilliant movie. So brilliant, it began at 8.30, there was an Adam Sandler movie that I also hadn't seen starting at 9.30 ... I decided I would give it an hour and if it didn't stimulate me, I would switch ... halfway through that first hour, i.e. 9.00, I knew damn well there was no way I was switching to Adam Sandler - and that's saying something!!

Man Fletcher Humphrys (ticket inspector in the final scene) is actually a very important Australian actor who is often forgotten about.

It's hilarious to see the actor who plays the ticket inspector (Fletcher Humphrys), isn't playing a deadly and intimidating villain role for once.

I love the name of the town. "Dung" means shite. "Atar" means scent. So the place is called "Shite-smell." Which suggest to me that someone really hated the small town in which they were once trapped.

Reminds me of Friedrich Dürrenmatt's, Der Besuch der alten Dame. (The visit of the old lady).

@@cathouse100 Oh ok. Yeah, you have to expect inaccuracies in movies. I actually wonder two things: was that bus she arrived on the type of bus in existence in 1951, and it certainly looked different to one seen towards end of film which would only have been a few weeks/months later. Also, she committed arson, so would she have had time to board a ship to Europe before the law caught up with her again? Presumably, a train in 1951 from Victorian outback to Melbourne would have taken a couple of days or so?

That's what I love about the movies - they can combine the best sewing machines with the best leading ladies - even if the two together might be physically challenged 🙂 I noticeably winced when the 201 gets chucked in the dirt!
