he SHOULD have been the main host replacement if they so desperately had to sack clarkson. would still be watching to this day even though i wouldve still missed clarkson and the other two.
He's quintessentially English, and it's the English who are a global treasure. The English who are the greatest and most morally virtuous Empire ever to have ruled. The English with it's Commonwealth are still the largest collective of people on the planet. 56 independent countries offering their voluntarily association and a people numbering over 2.5 million. England, Great Britain and the United Kingdom providing the world with it's blueprint for modern living.
@markscarborough1018 you're right, been dining out on that for 30 odd years every time he's on the TV. Best thing was that he brought a whole TV crew to film the whole race, and I took him out on the first corner!
@@stuartwright9148 Excellent Stuart! I can't quite imagine how gut wrenchingly embarrassing that must've been? The Alps would be an appropriately sized rock to crawl under for a year or two?
@markscarborough1018 The exact opposite Mark, it was a badge of honour in the pits. They had placed cameras all over the inside and outside of his car, with one just above his front wheel arch. We took bets in the puts who could clip it off on a corner. I finished the race with it embedded in my front bumper when I hit him! Just reading that back it sounds like I did it on purpose which I did not, he span on the first corner and we were taught to aim for the middle of the car as they usually roll forward or backwards with momentum...sadly he just kept skidding sideway and I had nowhere to go!
"The car must fit. Because as soon as you buy a car, you are immediately identified with all the other people, who have bought that kind of car." - Rowan Atkinson
0:53 So subtle but the way there's TWO psychologists analysing him rather than one, like he's a particularly curious specimen that requires extra personnel... God that made me chuckle. Makes me want to do a skit where the camera pans off the guy on the couch and there's a whole row of psychologists staring at him. 😂 This is an absolute masterpiece. Brilliant in its bizarrely off-kilter portrait of man.
I think I speak for a lot of Americans when I say we love Rowan. Brittish comedy doesn't usually go over well here in the States, but Rowan is just a genius. He can reach any market on Earth.
@@fahrradmittelfranken8207 I rode a bike for 20 years - Never met a bloke like Roderick! Still never met a bloke like Roderick. He was amazing. I'd like to meet a bloke like Roderick, but, just not, as you say, on my bike.
I can't believe he would recreate his youth rugby antics to demonstrate what he did like that. But then again, it's Rowan Atkinson, so it makes a lot of sense.
What a jewel of RU-vid to keep. Enjoyed every minute. I wish he would show his Jaguar or McLaren. But sure, he was only on the way to them, with two HP…
Police advocating higher speed limits... Using a member of the public for a TPAC manoeuvre... How times have changed... People don't like driving electric cars because they're associated with domestic appliances 😂
electric cars = power outage in summer time or during a winter blizzard. The grid only has so much power ... Germany is buying power frowm EU ... you cannot put e vehicles on the road without shutting down the power grid... y'all environmentalists are brain washed by big coal to play right into their hand and force you to keep buying coal power for the grid. You're not helping environment. Nuclear was the answer. You need a more robust nuclear grid. And you should be using betavoltaics in the cars instead of alkaline batteries...
Well that is quite a find ! More than 25 years after watching Mr Bean for the first time, what a surprise to discover that R. Atkinson had previously made such a serious program about the place of automobile in our society. And I'm glad that he mentions the nuisances that it brings as shown by the driving of that totally nuts London minicab driver.
😅😍I like your comment very much, since I've had EXACT those thoughts in my frontal lobe during several visits to London during 80ies and early 90ies AND in addition a vision about a pursuit up to Marble Arch to donut round the bends. And then decades later when Olypmics Road Bike TT course was revealed in London I had my hopes - with Rowan in eager DS car personalized as his Morris ofc. - was close, but no cigar 😁Greets from Denmark
I can entirely relate to Rowan’s early years story. My eldest brother built me an atco lawnmower powered go cart and I would literally spend all weekend driving it around and around the extensive paths of our rambling Edwardian house in Belfast. This progressed to my getting the mini out of the garage for my mother for the school run from about ten onwards. When I was old enough to have a moped I had a Honda SS50 unrestricted ped and went to school on it in a sui, tie and cowboy boots !😂 Like Rowan, I had no lessons and turned up in my Mother’s sporty Alfasud for my test and failed first time for similar ill defined reasons. I have always loved cars and driving since my earliest days. I even recall as a very young child, being sat on the floor of my Father’s Austin landcrab to work the floor mounted headlight dip/high beam switch when he tapped my head!😂. The pursuit of the perfect drive is a lifelong struggle that, for me, simply never wanes. I once saw Rowan driving a red Ferrari on the A14 near Barhill as he passed me. 🎉
As my parents told it, my second word was "Mustang" (when I saw one from the backseat). My first word, was, "Ghen" (again!) when I was gently tossed high in the air...
I can't believe how much this mirrors my experience driving. It's exactly the same from the farm to the trucks to the track. The farm part really hit hard. Bought back all those feelings.... I've also definitely taken plenty of those "shortcuts" 😂😂 Great video
That was fantastic. Why have I not seen this before ? Looks like it was produced in the early 80's. Had to laugh at the greeny, "if this doesn't stop we're all fuxed", 40 years later and we're still cruising. I was thinking last night about the theory that your patience increases with age. But I'm sure that driver incompetence is rising faster than my patience.
Cars represent freedom. Especially in areas where you can drive for days and still be in one country. Like Australia or the USA. You just keep going and going. It’s great.
If I had a time machine this is the era I'd like to go back and visit. Never saw this programme at the time - mid 1990s, I was probably watching The Word or something😆
Advocating a higher speed limit! They won’t do that now and compromise the revenue stream - particularly in Australia where the overly conservative speed limits simply bores drivers to death. But the money made from fines - it’s incredible!
To the nerd at 45 minutes telling us we have to give up cars this decade or the world will never recover. You know that hole in the ozone layer? Yeah, not a thing anymore. Now all we have to do is keep electric car manufacturing to a minimum so we don't ruin what we just did. Continuing to drive your old car instead of buying new does more for the environment than driving the new car.
15 people a day! Thats about 5 times what it is today. Every man and his dog drove drunk, no airbags, no adherance to speed limits, and very little punishment when caught speeding.
There is a big change between a gasoline powered vehicle and a horse and buggy. I think it is more a situation where people don't like unproven, immature technology that currently causes more pollution issues than it solves becoming the dominant means of personal transportation. Especially when the reasons for the change are those pollution issues. And also while other countries (namely India and China) are still propping up highly polluting coal fired power plants by the bushel to this day. People don't like to squeeze their own lifestyles and choices when vast many in other countries are not. It just seems hypocritical and wholly unnecessary.
Paul made a difference. A decent bloke who had a positive impact. The total figure of drivers trained via Drive & Survive and his work with Prodrive must be quite something.
"let's go in this lane, carve them up and turn left"😂. Imagine the level of social media comment section analysis of some of his driving nowadays. I hope he's still alive and driving like this in a corner of the capital somewhere
1:40 Something gives me the impression that Rowan is on the spectrum. I suppose you could get that impression from much of his work but I was already familiar with (and I absolutely loved) his work long before I came to any understanding of the autism spectrum so it never really occurred to me until this moment.
Very interesting, just to see the perspectives they had. Mr Green Peace Guy, I'm sorry, we chose the toilet. I'm very happy we have improved safety and effeciency at least.
