I vividly remember seeing this played out live on TV. I was absolutley sickened and never want to see this happen again. For that reason I paused this video as soon as it started in order to type this comment, but I won't watch it. Having said that, it is important to keep people aware of the dangers of motor sport and how horrific incidents like this were and still could be if safety precautions were relaxed. I was also at Brands Hatch when Jo Siffert died in his overturned BRM. That was not televised. I was near the pits when we saw the massive plume of smoke rise over the trees. The remaining cars pulled into the pits and there was a stunned silence that fell over the crowd. Thank goodness things have improved significantly since those dark days in the sport.

God rest his soul. Huge talent, sad loss. Purley, a wonderful F1 driver who at least tried his best to save Williamson. Sadly Purley later lost his life in a different type of accident. Xxx

What we have to remember is this was an era when safety was way down the list due to the resistance of circuit owners and the FIA. Marshals are not to blame. I have seen so many nasty comments aimed at the marshals from armchair marshals who have never done the job, even accusing them of murder. They had no training, no safety equipment was around then unless you worked the fire trucks. Race control was really bad and they wouldn’t stop the race and allow the truck to get to the incident. I think this channel has explained this tragedy very well but please let’s be respectful towards those that had to live with what they witnessed. With better training and equipment that day, Roger would have survived. But motor racing can thank one man who started marshal training and safety, one Louis Stanley.

There was a documentary, a Dutch one I believe that stated the marshals were frozen by fear which I can understand. Also in that documentary it was stated that the marshals had a sense of oh fuck, not again given it was the same corner where Piers Courage's fatal crash started out and many of the marshals worked the track both years and the marshals at the corner witnessed both incidents, so I can understand why they were frozen by fear however EDIT: I asked a marshal who worked Silverstone during that decade. I was told that it all depended on the training the marshals got. My contact has no way to get in touch with any of the marshals, but he's theorized that the marshals were frozen by fear and PTSD having witnessed both incidents at the same corner and it is likely that with the car being upside down and on fire, the marshals might have felt there was nothing that could be done however EDIT 2: On The point of training, I've found quite a few sources that state the marshals got eiher none or basic raining and some sources state they were not or were only very briefly shown how to use a ire extinguisher and left to it,

A lot of deaths in Formula One : Alberto Ascari, Mike Hawthorne, Taffy von Tripps, Jim Clarke, Lorenzo Bandini, Pedro Rodriguez, Jo Siffert, Ludivico Scarfiotti, Peter Revson, Francois Cevert, Bruce McClaren, Jochen Rindt, Jean Pierre Beltois, Ronnie Peterson, and so many more, it's hard to name them all.

I don't know, but I don't think he burned to death, but rather suffocated, because all oxygen was fueling the fire. probably his lungs were also roasted and non functional, since he breathed super hot air... a tiny bit less gruesome, but still horribl. especially when you see that he could have been saved...

You gotta ask yourself. Is winning a race so important, that you leave a fellow driver burning to death in his car?

Even for an era grossly lacking in safety, this incident was just inexcusable.

@@stephenbrown4211 the marshals? Absolutely not. It isn’t their fault that the Formula One leaders took no action to work for better safety at the various circuits. The people whose actions were inexcusable were those of the people at the top- who continuously ignored and shrugged off the complaints and concerns of the drivers.

@@saragrant9749 thank you. As I said in my original post, I have heard and read so many disrespectful things about the marshals that day I find I do question people’s comments. Please don’t take offence at my comment to you but I had to ask

@@stephenbrown4211 none taken for certain. I’ve read those same comments and it’s just mind boggling. So easy to blame the workers when the bosses are the real issue. It happens in every industry it seems.
