I'm always getting asked to break down drum licks. Drum licks to impress your friends. Drum licks to impress your girlfriend. Drum licks that will make my drumming sound impressive...lol, it's somewhat exhausting because the focus can become "how do I sound impressive?" instead of "how can I become a more musical drummer?".
In this drum tutorial I break out a drum lick that has come to be known as the Blushda. Many people think it is a drum rudiment...it's not. It's a variation on a popular drum rudiment, but it is not a rudiment itself. It was first popularized by Tony Williams but is used by SO many fantastic drummers. Each one of them puts their own spin on this lick. And that's what I want you to do as well. Take it, learn it, and then make it your own.
So for all of you asking me for a drum lesson on an impressive drum lick that you can use to impress all of your friends...this drum lick will do it. But I sure hope that's not what you use it for. I hope you use it to help you become a better musician.
Here's the Steve Holmes lesson that I reference. Please be sure to check it out and tell Steve I asked you to stop by: • The Definitive Blushda...

Been playing drums since 1990, big Tony Williams fan, I even graduated music school, how is it I've never heard of this before??? This was awesome. I've probably heard Proto Cosmos at least a few hundred times. This totally opened my mind up a little more to what Tony was doing.

When I first subscribed to you on youtube I was thinking "yeah, he's a pretty good but kind of stiff run of the mill rock drummer, not playing anything very advanced, not playing everything super tight, but he has some good lessons, well thought out arguments and he seems like a really nice guy" - but for the last year or so I think you've really levelled up your drumming. It's creative, fast, complex, dynamic, relaxed, fun and super tight. Maybe you've always been like that, only that you just aren't interested in being a flashy showoff, like the opposite of Adam Tuminaro, but my impression of your drumming now is far above what it was when I first found your channel, and that makes me very happy when I watch your content! Very inspirational!

Thanks so much Patrick. I appreciate the kind words. And it would veer much more towards the end of i am really not seeking to impress anyone. So if I’m teaching a simple drum fill, you won’t see me throw a bunch of licks in there as well. It’ll just be the simple fill. I’ve got a music project in the works that will hopefully give me a chance to showcase more of my playing in a musical setting, which is honestly where I’m most comfortable. Thanks again for the kind words!

There are 42 thumbs down on this video. I remember in 1988 hearing Steve Smith's do this lick. I spent months trying to figure it out. I figured it out, but it was only one variation. This video shows several different variations and a free PDF. The video is free also. What is wrong with people these days who are so quick to give thumbs down?!!!!!

Great lesson. I've loved this lick since I first noticed Gavin Harrison using it (he has some very creative uses of it: 3 minutes, 44 seconds into the him playing Porcupine Tree's "Futile" live is a great example). Thanks for breaking it down clearly!

After watching Eric Moore's video a few years back, I tried learning his blushda; but ended up creating a hybrid between a blushda and Juan Carlito Mendoza's Stutter. It's basically a herta between a rack tom (R) and snare rim shot (L), except the Ls are all accented and there's a kick flamming the second R. Idk if I meant for it to be a flam or if I'm just imprecise with my kick; but it sounds cool, so I use it

Tony Williams and 'his' predecessors were the innovators of the 'so called' blushda! To explain "TONY WILLIAMS" Licks in terms of the Steve(s),Todds,Vinnies,Novacks, Gadds,.et.al. As if Tony is merely 'incidental', ( none of whom would be worth listening to without 'their' major reliance on Tonys💩) is blasphemous!! Tony Williams is "credited"🤔 with this and many other licks and interpretations, because it's "TONY'S" 🥁SHIT, period!!--"FREE BILL COSBY" And All Innocent BlackAmericanDOS, Political and Cultural Prisoners of W/S!!

Who the f would thumbs down this?! This is your best video yet! The video and audio quality was top-notch! It seems like it’s important (in addition to counting and timing) that we have to maintain the volume separation of accented and non-accented notes, to add that other dimension to an already complex pattern. Super cool man!

The first time I heard the Blushda was watching Benny Greb doing it on his "Greb Fruit" song, but I recently learned it from "Todd Sucherman" doing his "Rock Drumming Master Class" course. You were very funky at the end with this fill. You are a really good educator and this was a great lesson on how infinite the possibilities are with the "Blushda" Thanks man and "Rock On."

I've always done this by playing Swiss Triplets and playing a diddle on the second partial. Feels really comfortable to me and is easier to move around the kit though it does feel a *little* different. It's a really nice sticking, though, because the lead hand plays the same sticking for Paradiddlediddles, which I switch between often during fills or solos! :)

Eggsellent work Stephen. Great close ups of your hands. Hope you have a 'Ride On' mower that turns on a dime. :-)

Oh yea, if you’re gonna have that much yard you gotta come correct with the mower you use 🙏🏼

The hippest drum intro was Start Me Up by Stones. Charlie played the snare on 1. A single note! Blusda is only hip to drummers. No one else give a crap. Enjoy your videos.

You are probably right! Everyone else hears only very simple boom boom bang! They don’t like drummers getting in the way of vocalist , piano , guitar . I get it..
