Fantastic interview! You really got him to expand on a lot of the ZXD/ILC philosophy. Great discussion. It was very honest, humble, and captivating. I learned a lot and enjoyed it very much. Thank you.

I really enjoyed the Sam Chin interview. I was hoping it would be a split screen zoom where viewers could see Grand Master Chin’s face and gestures while he was sharing the fine details of the art. Back in 1995 I had the good fortune to meet Sam Chin at the Buddhist monastery in Carmel NY through my close friend, colleague and kung fu, brother David Pandullo. Dave is an I Liq Chuen instructor level 6 under Master Chin. Back then, I had been a Police officer in NYC for 5 years and was also a freelance and assignment writer for Inside Kung Fu Magazine as well as other martial arts and police publications. Dave told me “You have to come and meet my teacher Sam, his Kung Fu is amazing. You might want to do a story about him.” I hadn’t seen Dave in a while and when I touched hands with Dave..I was completely controlled, there was nothing I could do. I was intrigued to say the least. How did Dave suddenly get these superpowers? I knew this I Liq Chuen was something special. This was my first visit to the monastery, so picturesque and beautiful on this warm summer day. Almost like a piece of China was cut out and transplanted into New York State. Sam Chin graciously received my wife, Amada and I when we arrived. He gave us a tour of the monastery, the temple, the grounds adorned with statues while explaining his family art of I Liq Chuen. The history, the technical aspects of the system and how the mind has to be present at the point of contact. He then invited me to “touch hands” and feel his Kung Fu. From my previous training and experience I was used to Wing Chun chi sao, Tai Chi push hands and Shuai Chaio grappling. Again, just like when I touched with Dave I could do nothing, literally. Immediately upon contact with his palms to my wrists and arms It was like he reached into my body and grabbed my bones. He was able to control my entire structure and balance with the slightest movement from his hands. The feeling was like I was stuck and couldn’t pull away from him and I intuitively knew that if I tried to counter this force, he could strike or throw me at will anytime he wanted to based off the movement I was about to do. It was completely overwhelming. I had never experienced or seen anything like this in my life, it almost didn’t seem real. In my mind I said I have to learn this. So I became a student of Dave. I was grateful and privileged that master Chin allowed me to write the very first article about him and his family system in mainstream martial arts media which appeared worldwide. Dave Pandullo assisted in the article’s photos with Sam. That article appeared in the March 1995 edition of Inside Kung Fu Magazine, page 94 with Bruce Lee, dressed as Kato on the cover. The story was entitled “The Internal Mind-Body System of I Liq Chuen”. Certainly a collectors item for all students if you can get your hands on a copy. I think there are still a few floating around the Internet for sale.
