The Dubliners--The Fields Of Athenry Lyrics
By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young girl calling
Michael they are taking you away
For you stole Trevelyans corn
So the young might see the morn
Now a prison ship is taking you away
Chorus
Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing
We had Dreams and songs to sing
Now it's loney round the fields of Athenry
By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young man calling
Nothing matters Mary when you're free
Against the famine and the crown
I rebelled they cut me down
Now you must raise our child with dignity
By a lonely harbour wall
She watched the last star falling
As the prison ship sailed out against the sky
Now she must live in hope and pray
For her love in Botany bay
For it's lonely round the fields of Athenry

I just randomly found this and my old uncle from Ireland born in 1890 with seven brother and seven sisters would sing old Irish songs. He was the kindest man I ever knew, he always had a song or a jig in his step, never complained and he only took a swig of Whiskey or Irish Mist on holiday occasions. I didn't come here knowing I would be holding back tears today. America has become a land of lost souls, we all need to start signing again.

Two major famines, and many smaller, struck Ireland in 18th and 19th centuries . . . . The incredible hardship the fine people of Ireland have endured/suffered . . . . This is a wonderful song and performance. Thank you to The Dubliners, And thanks to all who had a hand in recording and making it available here.

the strong, resilient Irish people have gone through much in their history, 800 or more years of oppression by the Normans and the English but they always have a song to sing and see so much love in music. The Irish people took such awful conditions and made so much beauty of it. Greatest musicians, poets, authors of our age all of them Irish TIOCFAIDH AR LA!!!

My Great grandfather came to the U.S. in 1906. From the moment he arrived he was hated for being Irish. My last name should be McGonagall but the guy that processed him through customs couldn't spell it or understand his accent so he wrote "Smith" on every form.... so I could've had a beautiful last name but noooooo.... lol I love Ireland, having Irish blood (mixed German now). With the way my current country is headed, I wonder if Ireland would have me? Haha! God bless.

I watched those free birds fly, at Rahasane Turlough (find it on YT), which is a disappearing lake, and a paradise for bird life, not far from Athenry. THe first time I went there, I saw a White tailed Eagle (a great rarity in Ireland at that time). THe second time... I saw a flock of 5 north american dowitchers (unprecedented!). THis is a magical landscape. This song always reminds me of my youthful days spent there.

Such a beautiful song. Pity some folk have such harsh comments on it sometimes. Obviously it has been adopted by others for different reasons and relates to folk In different ways. But It's a true heartfelt song with such a beautiful melody. Im Scottish so have Celtic routes along with the Irish folks. Wish everyone could just appreciate it as it was written.

+WFH WTEDG yes I do agree with you. I'm far flung so I look through rose tinted glasses. But I also do understand the problems the Irish folk had. My great gran was one of those that lived through the terrible times.

+WFH WTEDG yep I get you on that aspect. Unfortunately there is always going to be nimrods that chant these things. Through pure ignorance . Brought up with no knowledge or understanding of what they are actually saying. Away from football I still love love this song. Annoyingly I've been criticised for being a "campbell" and liking it!!!!

@@missleecampbell1806 My ancestors would not have agreed on a cruel winters night in Glencoe but that was then, this is now. That was their time and this is ours. I have a newborn daughter. Think about, as a man, trying to find some food so that your wife and newborn don't starve. This was the plight of many a man, and still is. If you have money for a $5 pint, find it in your heart to help someone else out. There are many, many charities who donate a very large chunk of their revenue to charity, and are clear in how they do that. Think about it as you enjoy your brew tonight. You can donate within the next few minutes.

I have tears in my eyes as I listen to this song. As an Englishman - I am ashamed of the treatment of the Irish in the times of the 1840s famines - and other occasions. There were some decent people in high office, but the majority wickedly saw the famines as a good way of ridding the UK economy of any expense of feeding/caring for the Irish poor. Shame on them. These were terrible times for many.

@jallen9343 This is Paddy Reilly who was the lead singer for the Dubliners at the time of this recording. He left The Dubliners in 2005, sadly and was replaced by Patsy Watchorn. They are touring the country at the moment, and are appearing at the Theatre Royal Norwich on March 12th ( a few seats left) where I shall be seeing them. Yippee!

By a lonely prison wall I heard a young girl calling Michael, they have taken you away For you stole Trevelyn's corn So the young might see the morn Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay Low lie the fields of Athenry Where once we watched the small free birds fly Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry By a lonely prison wall I heard a young man calling Nothing matters, Mary when you're free Against the famine and the Crown I rebelled, they cut me down Now you must raise our child with dignity Low lie the fields of Athenry Where once we watched the small free birds fly Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry By a lonely harbor wall She watched the last star falling As that prison ship sailed out against the sky Sure she'll wait and hope and pray For her love in Botany Bay It's so lonely ?round the fields of Athenry Low lie the fields of Athenry Where once we watched the small free birds fly Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry

This Passover we'll sing this song at the Seder in Israel in the knowledge that every generation no matter where must be eternally vigilant and actively resist and quash Authoritarians, budding and actual. Eating Matzah is only the beginning of the fight and celebration of our Festival of Freedom. Thanx for the lyrics. Слава богу, Слава Украине! Слава Карим Хан! א פריילעכ'ן פסח, חג החרות!
