The Fureys The green fields of france lyrics
Well how do you do, young Willie McBride?
Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside,
And rest for a while 'neath the warm summer sun?
I've been walking all day, and I'm nearly done.
I see by your gravestone you were only nineteen
When you joined the great fall-in in Nineteen-Sixteen.
I hoped you died well, and I hoped you died clean,
Or young Willie McBride, was it slow and obscene?
Did they beat the drums slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down?
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
And did the pipes play the flowers of the forest?
Did you leave any wife or a sweetheart behind?
In some faithful heart, is your memory enshrined?
Although you died back in Nineteen-Sixteen,
In that faithful heart are you forever nineteen?
Or are you a stranger without even a name,
Enclosed in forever behind the glass frame
In an old photograph torn, battered and bent,
And faded to yellow in a brown, leather frame
Chorus: Beat the drums slowly
The sun now it shines on the green fields of France.
There's a warm, summer breeze that makes the red poppies dance.
And look how the sun shines from under the clouds:
There's no gas, no barbed wire; there's no guns firing down
But here in this graveyard, it's still no mans land,
The countless white crosses stand mute in the sand,
To a man's blind indifference to his fellow man,
To a whole generation that were butchered and damned
Chorus: Beat the drums slowly
Ah, young Willie McBride, I can't help wonder why,
To those that lie here, now why did they die?
And did they believe when they answered the call,
Did they really believe that this war would end war?
Well, the sorrows, the suffering, the glory, the pain,
The killing and dying was all done in vain.
For young Willie McBride, it all happened again,
And again and again and again and again!
(Chorus repeated twice)
Did they beat the drums slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down?
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
And did the pipes play the flowers of the forest?

Hi Maria, thank u for ur reply. I am originally from Northern Ireland, now living in England. I am Protestant and Orange and consider myself British, but listen to all views and respect others' views even if I may not agree with them. From an early age I heard the music of the Fureys...and loved it. I actually saw them on St. Patrick's Day in 2010. They did a concert lasting over 2 hours and I wondered why they did not sing this song....until the finale when they brought the house down with "The Green Fields Of France". The many English people (majority) in the audience who had never seen them were stunned by the words of this song, the song that everyone was talking about in the foyer after. I am sure u will agree that it is an unsung classic....David

it should not be described as an anti war song. it has a context to WW1, and unnecessary suffering which WW1 is best known for. if anything this is about an Irish experience, and joining the great war for futile outcomes. (political appeasements in early WW2 was proved be divisive. WW2 demonstrated there can be a need for war)

David Elliott I'd say tied with "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda". Another great song about the futility of war, from an old Anzac's perspective. Those Furey's though...they can bring you to tears in no time flat. When Finbar sings The Fields of Athenry...get the tissues.

Unbelievably eloquent lyrics and profoundly proud and sad in a way that is utterly and distinctly Celtic. Just a wee footnote to the lyrics, the line "when you joined the great fall-in in 1916" Its should read "when you joined the great FALLEN in 1916" The "fallen" were those who died in the war. Many many get this wrong in the lyrics of this song! Fantastic song though, really touches you.

I think the two points that hit best of all for me are when he sings "There's no gas, no barbed wire, there's no gun firing now" and also when he stops singing and lets the others in the band sing "as they lowered you down" ... He just nails the mood and the meaning of this song completely here. Anyone who knows anything about the concert...please let me know.
