Imagine losing $5,000 by doing absolutely nothing. You want something to happen, so you give $5,000 to make sure it happens, and then, it doesn't even happen, and there's no recourse available for you. Well, that's exactly what happened with one ABC affiliate, KVIA, with their 1988 game between the UTEP Miners and the Wyoming Cowboys. This is the story behind that

I went to El Paso in 2017 with my wife to visit her friend, and we attended a UTEP game. It was their 0-12 season, and that particular game, they came the closest they would all season to winning. They lost 15-14 to Western Kentucky, and Western Kentucky went for 2 on one of their TDs that proved to be the difference. Sure the Miners lost, but I fell in love with the team, the venue, the fans, the campus, and the entire city. I've followed UTEP ever since, and picked up apparel aplenty. I'm born, raised, and live in Atlanta. So yes, there are Miner fans outside of El Paso.

I saw a garbage UTEP team beat BYU in 1985 after BYU had won their national championship it was also the first riot I ever saw. When UTEP wins, it is epic.

You should do a video (or 2 if needed) about the CFA and the TV rights breakup. As A law student that’s right up your alley. I’d love to see your take. Don’t deny us this gem.

This is very similar to when CSN Northwest (now defunct) paid the Vancouver Canucks roughly $700,000 in US dollars in 2011 to air select regular season Canucks games to the Pacific Northwest. I should point out that we were still a decade away from the Kraken joining the NHL, so the Canucks were the de facto NHL team for the region. According to the contract, CSN could air any Canucks game that wasn't on Hockey Night in Canada or on national TV in the US which was Versus/NBCSN/NBC or the NHL Network at the time. They also had to use the Sportsnet Pacific feed & graphics for the broadcasts. One Canuck game that CSN really wanted to air that season was a match-up in late October vs Alex Ovechkin & the Washington Capitals. However because both teams made the playoffs the previous season & had star players, the NHL Network decided to pick up this game & air it nationally in the US, leaving CSN Northwest out of luck & losing $7,000 in the process. This happened two more times that season one with NBC getting the rights to air the Stanley Cup rematch from the previous season vs the Boston Bruins on January 7th & the game on April 3rd vs the Anaheim Ducks being aired on NBCSN (which transitioned from Versus that January). Basically CSN Northwest lost $21,000 to their parent company as Comcast owned the station along with NBC, NBCSN & half of the NHL Network. After the season ended the president of CSN Northwest was so upset with the contract that he had made with the Canucks that he resigned in protest & the contract was terminated.

As a UTEP Miners fan today, it's lucky that we can be on national television. Sometimes we do get TV time but it's always against a school that's like 100 times better than us or just showing highlights of us getting smacked around. It's a shame honestly that we get that treatment, the team is good but we're basically turning into a JUCO school now and that's insulting.

This unofficial Jaguar Gator 8 historian will remind everyone you made videos about the following: 1. How El Paso viewers missed the end of the Sun Bowl the next year. 2. How Southern University made a decision that caused ABC to not pay HBCU conferences $40,000 in 1996.

Some great Wyoming offenses in the late 80s to the 90s. Roach then Tiller. Devaney started his head coaching career in Wyoming before heading to Nebraska. Interesting enough the current HC at UTEP previously coached at Wyoming

Probably about as close to relevance UTEP has ever been, lol actually kinda impressive how historically bad they have been being in Texas, would think they would have a few random good teams with that recurring pool

UTEP is in Texas, true. But being 760 miles away from Houston and over 550 miles from San Antonio it's very isolated and far from recruiting pools.

Having been to El Paso, yes, technically El Paso is within the state of Texas (and therefore the SEC footprint, think about that for a second), but they are so remote. It's really New Mexico more than Texas. It's 8 hours to the nearest metro area of any size in Texas, and about 4.5 hours to Tucson, Arizona. It really is a shame, because the Sun Bowl, despite its age (and it has not been renovated, at least until 2017), is one of the more classic and picturesque settings in all of college football.

There was a silver lining for UTEP in this story. They lost the Wyoming game, and so didn't win the WAC conference, which means they didn't go to the Holiday Bowl and have to try and tackle Barry Sanders, who ended up running all over Wyoming in the Holiday Bowl later that year, as the Oklahoma St. Cowboys scored 62 points if memory serves. Even though the game is 35 years old as I write this, I still remember betting OK State laying 7, and after a 17-7 halftime lead, watched the floodgates open as Sanders, Gundy, Dykes, and the OK State Cowboys put on a fireworks show. As far as what happened to UTEP after the Wyoming game? They beat San Diego St. and Air Force to finish the year 10-2 and got invited to the Independence Bowl, where they played and lost (38 to 18) to Southern Miss., who had some guy named Brett Farve at quarterback.

UTEP had ,if I remember right Tony Tolbert, Seth Joiner on Defense. I can't remember if they had Sammy Garza or Rocky Perez. Channel 7 had nothing on that day. Most of the cartoon were over and Sabado Gigante was on channel 26 at 3pm.

What am I missing here? The $5k that KVIA spent with Wyoming wasn't for the rights to the game, it was to change the game time. There are obviously costs involved with altering the time of a game, promotional materials, etc. If the game ended up being played at 1p instead of noon (or Wyoming spent money to start the process of moving the game time prior to CBS taking the game), Wyoming would have fulfilled their end of the agreement as they clearly would have had out of pocket costs to make the change. KVIA losing access to the game wasn't something that Wyoming or UTEP had control over. This feels more like a gamble that KVIA made and lost, rather than someone not fulfilling a contract obligation.

Yes, I said the same thing....the rights were not sold the game start time was bought

UTEP was embarrassed that day, but at least it wasn't out of $5K. Also, I wonder how much of the US got that game. Being in an SEC state (Florida in my case), I got LSU/Alabama.

$5K is pocket change for a TV station. Yeah it was a bad contract, but usually TV deals are in the hundreds of thousands minimum. KVIA can make that up easy by charging a little bit extra for the late night infomercials.
