To add to the mix, I just remembered the episode where Hyacinth (Katy) comes to the kids’ school and confesses, disappointingly, that she is a waitress, thus leading to uncomfortable silence from the class. On that note, on what planet is being a waitress something to be embarrassed about? Sure it’s not a high paying job, sure it doesn’t require a degree, but at the end of the day, she has a job and I really dislike the implication that working in a diner is something to be ashamed of. One of my favorite movies is Annie, and in Annie, she longs to have a family and gets one at the end (spoiler alert). But in Annie, she initially didn’t have parents AT ALL and lived in an orphanage with an ab*sive caretaker and several other girls, one of which she shared a twin sized bed with. In that case it makes sense for her to want Oliver Warbucks to adopt her because she wasn’t getting affection, comfort, shelter etc. from any direction. In the Hurricane episode, Maya uses the word “better” to describe what victims hoped for post Hurricane Katrina, thus alluding to her life being “better” if she had a dad. Maya’s life isn’t perfect but it sure doesn’t come CLOSE to that of Katrina victims, and it certainly isn’t something to teach kids to be unhappy about. Implying that with Shawn, her life would be “better” is implying that her life was not good enough with just her and Tessa (Katy), and that, friends, is not a good message. Getting a father is not going to make her life miraculously perfect. Pre-Shawn, Maya had an employed mother who loves her, Maya had a roof over her head, Maya had a best friend whose family treats her like one of their own. (Maya had the beautiful face of Sabrina Carpenter). Maya was fine. Also if you’re like a 12 year old who loves Girl Meets World and is mad about this video, please go write about your frustration in your diary because the entire point of this was to address real life r*cial d*scrimination that translated into fiction, and there are people in these comments like, “Why are you so upset, it’s just a kids show 🤪”
It's funny I was just thinking about this boondoggle of a storyline and your past videos on it some days ago 😅, and yeah You've said it all. Even things that I have suggested like: How they could have had Angela and Shawn reunite in-between shows and have them break up or divorce more respectfully, or they could have kept them together and have them adopt Maya because her mother for whatever the reason can't be around no more, or they could have had Angela pass away after being married to Shawn for some time and now Shawn is learning to move on and make peace with that by getting with Maya's mother, or Shawn could still be a father figure to Maya while being married to Angela and Maya's mother finds someone else. Now none of these I don't think are ideal for Shawn and Angela, but they would have been a better and more respectful way to write her out of Shawn's life if they just had to go there and make him become Maya's father 🤔. I mean I think it is clear as day that that is the main reason they did this storyline this way, why they so quickly had Shawn and Maya's mom get married, and why they decided to make Angela look like a villain or an obstacle that is in the way of Shawn finding a true love 😑. Moreover, given all the behind the scenes drama with Angela's actress just further adds to this badly handled storyline and may explain a lot as to why they did it this way 🤨. Lastly, 50:00 Idk BMW did at times kind of push some similar (what we would call conservative) vaules from what I remember 🤔.

i agree. ANYTHING would’ve been better than this lol. It was the writers just wanted to make people sad Also i haven’t i watched BMW in a minute but im sure you’re right. But it wasn’t nearly as bad this conservative-ness of this show 🤣
@ In reference to your top comment. I haven't seen that episode of Maya's mom revealing that she's a waitress to kids, but it sounds like they are doing that typical sitcom thing where Katy is ashamed to reveal that she's not working some high end job, and the kids may give Maya looks or pick on her about it. Also, you tell me if they do the whole everyone else in class have parents with higher paying jobs and are more successful which makes Katy and Maya more nervous 😅. However, usually that scenario works more if the maya was in a darker situation like living poor or having her mother be non-attentive (like it was for Shawn), or if the message is that there is nothing wrong with living humbly with a decent paying job or that sometimes people end up in that situation 🤔. Lastly, if you do have younger people in these comments complaining it definitely sounds like they are having a hard time seeing perspective or admit that a show they like has flaws 🤨. Perhaps they know when they are older but they can learn right here and now. Thanks JM for reading my thesis papers here 😅, but it's good to see your videos again. Have a blessed one 😎.
@ Could you compare Maya's situation to Andi Mack's and how Andi was forcing her parent's to be together because she wanted a "Normal Homelife" or immediate family. And how Buffy and Cyrus stuck together because Andi reacts to things first and ask questions later. Fans say she's so dramatic and self-centered. In episode I think 2x4 or 1x4 of the show, Buffy even tells her off about it. Maya Heart and Andi Mack have a lot in Common.
All Shawn needed to say. " She used to be my girlfriend but she moved to Europe to be with her father. That's just how life goes sometimes. But no they wanted forced drama.
Or' Angela was my girlfriend but her being in Europe and my being in the States with neither one of us wanting to relocate proved too much for our bond after a time but we parted friends- and I won't have my FRIENDS talked to so RUDELY,Cory! So you, Katy and Riley especially owe Angela BIG apologies for being so needlessly snotty to her when ALL she did was walk into this cafe and ask if I was here and was never less than polite to everyone else the whole time!'
You guys would seriously say that about a girlfriend/boyfriend you had over 15 years ago? By this time, having not seen each other since, the romance would be gone, or at least nothing like it was before departing. She was someone he used to love, and that love has been lost to the years apart.
A better plotline would be Shawn and Angela planning to get married and Maya trying to break it up so Shawn can be with her mom. Then the mom explains that she's not interested in dating right now and her and Shawn are just friends. Angela and Maya could also bond and Angela could become a second mentor for Maya. Then at the end of the show we all get to see Shawn and Angela get married.
Right! Like its fine that Maya has a childish view of relationships like you can only have one true love and the only Shawn can care about her is if he marries her mom but the fact that the show validates it is so weird to me🤣
Like didn't they forget about Mr Turner who was literally Shawn's unofficial father. He never had to be married to Shawn's mother or anything, and both of Shawn's parents were still married and were both still his parents and guardians. Shawn was basically pressured to be with Katy for the sake of Maya. And the way they bad mouthed Angela alongside Riley being annoying and talking rudely to her was just so off.
ALSO-in the episode where Angela leaves and specifically says, “Let’s not say goodbye-let’s say I love you”, SHAWN’S ass says “Goodbye, Angela” when she’s out the door. HE WAS THE ONE WHO GAVE UP.
Of course he gave up, just as he gave up on getting to know his Dad. She's leaving, and she eventually was showing to be gone for around 15 years later, after she's already been married. Why shouldn't he give up, especially since she never came back. Why should he not give up?
The person that left quit the relationship...in this case, Angela chose her father, and Shawn said goodbye. I'm not that big of a fan of Sean, but this wasn't on him. He did get left.
@@palehorse24681 - Yes and no. It's the drama that they went with, and reaffirmed in Girl Meets World. They could have still stayed in touch, they could have gotten married and have kids. The possibilities were limitless until they wrote Shawn back into the story. It made sense in some ways, since Girl Meets World plays on the nostalgia of Boy Meets World. More often than not, it worked. But, when it didn't work, it could become as cringe as the Kathleen Kennedy Star Wars trilogy, and eventually became what resulted in why Girl Meets World only lasted 3 years compared to Boy Meets World's 7 year run.
Not to mention they made Cory treat her as if they weren’t even friends, and sided with Katy. Like what, there is legit a whole season focused on Angela, and even an episode where Cory takes the time to get to know Angela as his friend, and not Shawn Hunters girlfriend, completing the quartet. Here she doesn’t even hug him, or he doesn’t even acknowledge her, not even as much as a hug. Meanwhile they spent their early adult years together.
Can we all just collectively pretend like girl meets world doesn’t exist at all?! This show literally offered nothing good or important to the original series
no literally except for the eric and tommy reunion and the eric and jack reunion it has done nothing for me. also the uncle josh and maya relationship put a sour taste in my mouth
After Trina called her cast mates out for r@cism, i noticed people thinking that she chose not to do the reboot because of it. Meanwhile it seems that it wasn’t that SHE didn’t want to come back, but instead, her cast mates didn’t want her to come back
From my understanding she has always said the guy who played Shawn always treated her with kindness. Which is heartwarming to hear. Also think she reconciled with some of the other cast members. However the Girl meets World writers did her soo very wrong.
@@angel127_ i read a article--it looks like her and topanga's actor cleared it up too--well she at least accepted her apology, nothing from cory though...
@@alyxluvssRyder was her biggest ally and supporter back in those days and treated her with kindness, Danielle and Will were somewhere between standoffish or offensive but she made amends with them at a later point in time, Ben Savage is the only one previously mentioned as doing her dirty who has had nothing to say about the situation or seemingly addressed it in public or private and that’s kinda where things stand as far as I last read (I also think Ryder or Danielle said Ben actually cut all of them off recently so it sounds like he was and still is a huge problem).
Here's what I don't understand, they could've still had Shawn end up with Katy without demonizing Angela. People who love each other don't always end up together because life gets in the way. It would be WAY more realistic if Angela and Shawn had a great relationship that ended amicably because of normal reasons and they remained friends. Most people don't end up with their highschool bf/gf. Doesn't mean you have to hate them to end up with someone else.
@@motaku220 - The same is true with college. Not everyone marries who they dated in college. The point is, they don't have to be turned into enemies just because their relationship didn't work out.
Shawn marrying Maya’s mom made his and Maya’s relationship less special. As a father figure, he is a man willingly stepping in to care for a young girl in need, but marrying her mom turned it into him simply fulfilling fatherly obligations, rather than doing this out of the kindness of his heart
Young me i enjoyed it but looking back at it now you're right and it was a terrible decision. Cause it essentially makes shawns previous relationship with angela meant like it was another relationship to him which is COMPLETELY out of a character and that maya mom was "the one" which makes no sense since their main connection is his friend daughter is best friends with her daughter.
The way all the previous cast members got audience applause with a cute little wink wink nudge nudge ‘yeah they’re here!’ While Angela was prepped to be hated and discarded before she even stepped foot on set really highlights all those rumors about bmw behind the scenes.
"Do you want a dad or do you want your mom to have a husband" is such a good summary. I didn't watch Boy Meets World but Angela sounds incredible. I can't believe there wasn't more backlash for writing Angela out. I'm upset on her behalf. And this whole plot is so poorly handled - I wish Maya could have accepted that he would be in her life and care about her regardless of his relationship with her mother.
Same, I never watched it either but my fiancé did. And from the clips shown of the original show, their relationship looked great, I just might watch it. This one, this... Girl Meets World... Is a huge disservice. They must have had Shawn and Angela's actor/actress come back out of spite and paid generously for Angela to be spat on for her entire appearance.
I don’t understand why Maya couldn’t have just been Shawn and Angela’s child? Like, maybe something happened that got them back together, and they had a kid. That way we could have had Cory, Topanga, Shawn AND Angela all be together to influence their children’s lives? And actually impact the show like they did with BMW? SMH 🤦♀️
I am so tired of ppl pretending that shawn and angela’s gmw reunion was “realistic” when it was really just a racially motivated nostalgia baiting joke.
i've never watched gmw but after seeing this comment i had to do a double take because wtf?? how do you get shawn's character so wrong like seriously 😭
One of the things that makes me crazy about GMW was that the whole show (when the old cast appears at least) is basically a reference to the season 7 episode of Boy Meets World “The War” which is supposed to be the worst case future scenario. In that episode Angela is portrayed as the one that got away, Jack is the unfeeling business man , Eric is a hobbit man, and Cory and Topanga are friendless parents. Sound familiar?!? GMW becomes that terrible future scenario and even though I loved it at the time, looking back on it I am so disappointed. This video was a great analysis btw. Justice for Angela :((
that is one of my most rewatched episodes, and it is very surprising that they went with that. Are these writers that forgetful of their own writing...
Personally, I feel like they should have just made Maya Shawn and Angela's daughter, either biological, in which they cast a mixed-race girl to play as Maya, or through adoption, if they really wanted Sabrina Carpenter to play her. Heck, if they chose the "Maya being Shawn and Angela's adoptive daughter" route, they could have made it tie-in to when Turner originally was to adopt Shawn, and it could be seen as Shawn doing what Turner was unable to do all those years ago. Also, I feel like we should have just started the series off with both couples married and with children - Cory and Topanga with Riley as their daughter, and Shawn and Angela with Maya as their daughter, instead of Shawn trying to get his love life together as GMW did.
They could’ve had Maya’s mom killed off and Maya gets adopted by Shawn who then reunites with and marries Angela. That would’ve been perfect for all of them.
@harrisonho Shawn and Angela adopting would have also furthered the idea that they aren't Corey and Topanga. They are a different couple with different problems like they have to adopt because they can't have children or something like that 🤔.
Why couldn't Maya have been in foster care and then became Shawn's foster daughter who he eventually adopts? Because Katie wasn't originally talked about in a good light, then boom here comes Shawn who Maya got attached to and suddenly Katie wasn't a bad mom anymore, just a misunderstood struggling single mom ripe for Shawn tend up with just so he could adopt Maya.
Also, I was the generation that watched BMW back in the day as it aired and I'm a white woman who loved Shawn and Angela for all the same reasons argued here and more.
@@Brandon-yy5cc the writers of the show are comparing a natural disaster situation that killed over 2000 people and left many homeless, traumatized, etc to a Maya being sad that Shawn meets with Angela
When I learned that Angela married someone else and moved on, I was happy for her. And I understand that couples move on and so just stay friends after the breakup, but to break up one of the best interracial relationships on television, that was just low on so many levels. And what makes this worse is that Trina got called out by the young fans of girl meets world for trying to ruin Shawn and Maya’s mom getting together….. I’m like go watch Shawn and Angela boy meets world scenes and that will tell you who are the better couple
@@Missmagazinebura what do you mean by hope so? i'm not understanding. they're in the same grade when they're in high school together. she, cory, shawn, and topanga were all in the same class together. so while the actress was older, the character of angela was not.
I honestly believe they did Angela's character so dirty because the actress called out her cast mates for being racist towards her in the past. Her being written out with the marriage was the writers basically saying, "here she is, and here she goes, never to be back"
Angela spoke out about her mistreatment during April 2020, this episode came out 5 years earlier. she was also treated poorly during her appearance for GMW which she addressed at the same time as the other tweets. so no, her speaking out had nothing to do with the way she was written.
Which honestly makes the writers seem far more racist when you think about it. Like if I was on the crew and found out a non white actor felt like parts of the crew were racist towards them, I wouldn't write them out, I'd do everything I could to make it up to them and try and give them the same role they had with a decent chunk of screen time.
Shawn and Angela were my favorite couple on boy meets world. There relationship felt more real and earned than Cory and Topanga. They were also the two best characters in Boy Meets World. My heart broke when she moved, and I loved the idea that they would come together again at a later point. And then I heard what Girl Meets World did to Angela and I was so angry. ETA: Also, what happened to Angela being Topanga's best friend?
personally for me the weirdest part of Shawn's Romeo and Juliet line for me was both him and Angela stated they wanted something like Cory and Topanga, but felt like they'd never get it and they still took a chance on each other. they loved each other so much it was clear every time they talked, and while Cory was a big advocate for there relationship when they weren't together he was never the reason they got back together which was why Angela's final episode was so important. Cory kept pushing what Topanga did for him when she decided to not go to Yale, but he understands how much her father means to her so he let her go which was the truest sign he loved her
My personal canon is that Shawn and Katy only lasted a year and swiftly divorced. He remains in Maya’s life as a mentor but finds himself reconnecting with Angela.
Damn I knew the “ending” of their storyline was bad but I didn’t know it was THAT bad. The little white girl walking up to a grown woman she DOES NOT KNOW and giving her the rudest little “hi” is insane to me. Raise your child better than that Cory. Wtf.
You sure NAILED that one! Riley was rude and entitled because her parents had raised her that way! And I hated how everyone but Shawn was needlessly rude to Angela who just walked into a place called 'Topanga's and asked for Shawn! I just wish SHAWN had called them out on their rudeness to this woman who'd been completely POLITE to them(especially Cory, Riley and Katy)!
@@kendallrivers1119 Exactly- and if I'd so much as not replied 'Yes, sir,' 'No, ma'am' to an adult family friend in a respectful tone not only would I have gotten called out on the spot and ordered to apologize but I'd have not heard the end of it for a very long time! Yet, Cory and Topanga not only didn't call out Riley's rudeness to Angela (and Mr. Feeny) but Topanga even went so far as to SMILE at her kid's openly bullying Mr. Feeny! REALLY?! Uhn-UH! BOO!!!!!!
She is Topanga daughter too 😅and Topanga when she was younger had that defiant attitude yup looks Riley got her mother's ugly traits but it's coulda been worse she only said hi in a rude way that's the least horrible and less violent act ...any other show woulda gotten dark with similar scenes
@@tfuentes6545 Being 'not as bad' isn't the same is being good! And Riley was deliberately trying to manipulate two adults (Shawn and Katy) to go through the motions as a means to further meddle in her claimed friend Maya's life instead of respecting anyone else's call on this or virtually anything else on this show!
will NEVER forgive them for having the girls re-use the feeny call without will friedle's permission/input because he literally made it up, not the writers
@@caro31099 To say nothing of using as a bullying taunt after having waved their hands in Mr. Feeny's face AND helped Cory, Topanga and Shawn having vandalized Mr. Feeny's garden! Topanga SMILED at those girls' snotty actions to this old man [whom she'd praised as someone who'd been more of a father than her own father when she left Penbrook ]who'd been nothing but their victim- and NO ONE apologized to Mr. Feeny for any of the above- EVER!
If they wanted """"realism"""" so badly, why not have Topanga and Cory divorce instead? Their romance lasting as long as it did isn't realistic, and I think the ensuing drama could have been really interesting. What if Riley lives with her mom Topanga, but still gets to have a relationship with her dad Cory because he's her teacher? And Maya can be the adopted daughter of Shawn and Angela (who are happily married), right from the get-go?
Not to mention that Cory and Topanga became a downright TOXIC couple on the latter show but everyone faked that they were somehow the 'perfect' couple and family! NOPE!
This is a really good re-write I’d kill for someone to re-write the plot of GMW with this. It also makes Maya and Riley BASICALLY cousins (let’s be real they would call his ass uncle Shawn) and since they already act related (it’d feel a lot less weird that they act this way to each other if they were) it fits perfectly! Keep in mind this show was only a year or so removed from ANDI MACK, a show that while it had dramatic elements was very realistic on its face. It had this kind of angst. It also could’ve been a very sweet story of Maya not wanting to meet her mom or she does meet her (either as a waitress or some other means) and accuses Katy of abandoning her. Katy of course didn’t abandon her, or gave up on Maya, she gave Maya up for adoption because she wanted to give Maya a life free of pain and struggle that Katy has to live. Maybe Katy was a teen mom or her boyfriend/husband left her mid pregnancy or maybe she simply fell on rough times. It ends with the two rekindling a bond that, while not maternal, is still very sweet, maybe Katy even meets Shawn and Angela as newfound friends through Maya. It also reinforces the fact that family is the one you choose, not by blood or what is chosen for you.

They also literally had an entire episode revolving around the fact that they didn’t need to be like Corey and Topanga to be a real couple, they just needed to be Shawn and Angela. GMW and Michael Jacob’s must’ve gotten amnesia
@@TheActionJackson More like GMW and MJ became willfully ignorant of Shawn and Angela's actual histories and MO's [and tried to forcefeed the audience to do the same]!
They could’ve had Angela come on the show with her husband and it turns out she and Shawn were friends in touch the whole time, and he was even at her wedding or something. But they did Trina McGee dirty on this one. Also the fact that they didn’t keep in touch…whatever happened to “lose one friend, lose all friends, lose yourself?” The little mantra they learned after they shamed Rachel in the last season for a risqué picture or something, an iconic line that Eric said. According to the premise of the show if you lose your friends, you lose yourself. But screw Angela, Jack and Rachel right?
Yep! And somehow as per GMW despite Jack having been a groomsman at Cory&Topanga's wedding AND Shawn's half-brother, NO ONE had told him that they'd become parents to Riley until her junior high school dance. Not that she was any prize but still. . .
@@wardarcade7452it really seems that that episode where they pulled pranks on each other and eventually shamed Rachel for taking nudes for Jack, Jack, Angela and Rachel were right to feel like they’re not really a part of the group. All three of them were done so dirty in GMW and only the “lifers” got any real screen time or development.
the problem was I feel like they were trying to be too "progressive" despite boy meets world already being moving and touching to most. I dont know why the show focused so much on 12 year old girls "exploring the world" and basically ignoring their parental figures and setting TERRIBLE examples for such a young audience. they became progressive in all the wrong ways.
The different in quality between Boy Meets World and Girl Meets World is a perfect example of how adults in the 90s understood, respected, and listened to young people and therefore were better at writing coming of age stories than adults in the 2010s were. 99% of the time, when I see a coming of age story from the 2010s or even 2020s, it feels like there's some sort of agenda and that the adults writing the teen characters don't respect or care about their characters or target audience at all, which, of course, ruins the story.
Idk. While I agree BMW is far and away better I'm always iffy about generalizing stuff like this. And over valuing the past due to nostalgia. Given that for every 1 boy meets world there are 20 stinkers/ forgettable shows. I think shows like that are pretty much just lightning in a bottle. No matter the time period.
i honestly wish they left angela out altogether with how poorly she was treated, at the very least only shawns character would be heavily wounded by these god awful writers if she was left alone

Y'know what might have made Shawn being Maya's dad work? If instead of him marrying into her family via her mom and becoming her stepfather, what if...Shawn was already Maya's biological dad? Imagine if...Shawn was a single dad trying to be the best dad he could to raise his daughter Maya (parallelling his struggles from BMW) after the loss of his wife. Like let's say Maya's mom isn't in the picture cause she passed away prior to the story and the two had to adjust to a life without her because Maya's mom used to be the light of their family. So it's a story about a father and daughter bonding over shared grief and learning to lean on each other after suffering a great loss. And ultimately, instead of Angella returning to be a "problem". Instead of her being a "hurricane", she is instead a ball of sunshine. A beacon of hope that returns to the story to have her and Shawn rekindle their love story and have the happy ending the two were supposed to have at the end of BMW. It would have been cool to see Angella become Maya's stepmother and see them bond instead of the complete assassination of her character that was done in the GMW.
The writing in Girl Meets World is proof of how stubborn and immature elders have become. How could these writers have been so progressive and genuinely innovative with their storytelling for Boy Meets World in the 90s, but not for GMW in the 2010s. I think old people have grown so condescending and unempathetic to the young experience. And it seems as though people's true colors come out when they get in those old ages. I don't know what happened, maybe they saw how we bring problematic things to light, and grew bitter, so they don't want to be a part of the solution, and instead will just be more rigid in their conservatorship...holding themselves back from growth. It's a real shame that Angela's character and her relationship with Shawn wasn't given the respect it deserves. I hope those writers at least have some level of regret...I'm sure they won't though, with how out of touch yet preachy this show was, they definitely aren't even aware of how entitled and annoying their know-it-all but dead wrong writing comes off
Yeah I realized as someone who watched both shows it seems like the writers were unintentionally progressive and made GMW as a way to undo and reverse that as they don't realize that's what made it good
@@len4129I agree! It sounds like what happened with 'Star Wars' with all movies, cartoons, books, etc. after 'Return of the Jedi' which seemed to deliberately undo every bit of joy, likability and accomplishment that had happened up to that point.
It would have been way more compelling for Maya to continue to form a found family than an actual family.. but then again, at that point, gmw's writing team had made it pretty clear it wasn't after a well-written show to rival bmw, it was after Nostalgia bait. gmw is just another cut-and-paste Disney sitcom that had an over-inflated view of itself. Shawn should have been married to Angela, it honestly would have been sweeter to see Maya go through an arc where she meets Shawn, imprints on him, and finds out he's married to the love of his life so is disappointed he can never truly be her dad, but because of the bond the two of them have formed kind of gets pseudo adopted by the couple- like maybe there could have been a plot in which the couple is either deciding to have a child or having difficulty conceiving, and/or the trauma of his childhood has made becoming father something Shawn struggles with but it's a point of contention between the couple because Angela really wants to be a mom. it would tie into the Shawn/Turner dynamic as well, Shawn's finding himself filling the place of his own past mentor the way that Corey is also taking the place of Feeny so it continues on from bmw instead of just using bmw as a way to get "omg I remember them!" point from the audience. introducing Maya into their home could add something to their dynamic, but instead the writing team felt the only way for Maya and Shawn to have any form of Father-daughter relationship is that they needed to be ACTUAL father and daughter... which honestly takes away from Maya's overarching character who acts as the Matthew's new little charity case. bmw, though very flawed, pushed boundaries with its topics and characters, the 90s allowed sitcoms to explore things that the 2010s sitcoms seem to be too afraid even approach. back when the show was first airing I had the mindset that if it were on a different network, gmw would have been better, but honestly, after seeing its completion, I think the creator of bmw might have just lost his touch when it comes to writing compelling storylines that aren't right-wing propaganda pieces wrapped up in a progressive bow. lowkey I wish I could see a world in which the gmw team actually put the effort in, it was such wasted potential.
I am not a black person, but a passionate fan of Shawn and Angela, their pairing felt accessible and real to me in a way Cory and Topanga never was. I was so angry about her exclusion, her demonization. I honestly stopped watching when I saw they had no intention of properly bringing her back in.
Off topic, but Angela's wig when she shows up on GMW is so atrocious the stylist had to be plotting against her wtf!!!! I know Disney has a history of not hiring proper stylist to do their Black actors' hair, but this is a newer show!!! Angela is so gorgeous she deserves better!!!
It is one of the worst wigs I've seen on a show of this "quality". If the way they handled her character wasn't bad enough they had come back with a party city wig🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
You'd think with Riley being her best friend that she'd view Corey as father figure. Kinda how Shawn would go to him when he needed something before Mr.Turner. heck you could see that Corey's dad saw Shawn as another son and treated him wirh the same love he showed for Corey and Eric.
Having Angela and Shawn permanently break up just so Shawn could be the yt protagonist's yt bestie's new dad is sooooooo....ghetto actually. All that build up in BMW for....him to marry some random yt lady that we barely know.🙃🙃 Like, at least give us something better than that. Have Angela be a main cast member in GMW with her own important storyline at the very least to make up for breaking her and Shawn up. But no 😒, we get repetitive tropes. Also. why did Shawn HAVE to be Maya's dad so badly? Maya already has her bff's parents to serve as secondary parental figures and mentor figures. She can have multiple father figures without Shawn marrying Katy. This plotline was so weak and forced.
this show has such a youth pastor vibe to me and the fact that the only way Shawn can be Maya's father figure is by marrying her mother really doesn't help it also god, I havent gotten to see the original BMW, but it makes me so sad to see how Angela and Shawn are written after seeing all this. To me the best romances are ones where they bring out the best in each other, that one Miyazaki quote about characters who inspire each other to live basically; and the way GMW trashes all of that is so disheartening
i have no clue as to why they didn’t just make maya shawn and angela’s adopted parents being that shawn comes from a rough background and he would want to give a child a chance to live a life with parents who care. maya’s arc could’ve been wanting to meet her birth mother, who could’ve been katy.
Especially since they turned what had been Eric's admiration proclamation into a snotty bullying taunt [while waving their hands in his face [!]]! BOOO!!!!!!!
@@b0nesaww Yep! Watch the episode for yourself then see how they did ALL the above to Mr. Feeny AFTER they, Cory, Topanga and Shawn had dug up his garden to find the time capsule without anyone even TRYING to ask him permission before they did it! He literally had done NOTHING but be their victim before they did that horrible, taunting 'call' ! What's more not only did none of the other so-called adults try to stop or apologize for it but Topanga actually SMILED at the teens' mistreatment of the man she'd said had been MORE of a father than her OWN in the BMW Finale Ep! Why was bullying, vandalism and elder abuse supposed to have been funny?!
When I found out that Shawn married maya’s mom, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the ship, I loved Shawn and Angela so when I found out that the creator didn’t support the ship but the fans did. I want maya’s mother to be happy but with Shawn. I would rather have her mother get with an old high school boyfriend.
NGL, if I were Shawn, being called a jerk for daring to wonder what was up with my ex girlfriend would make me wish I'd stayed away from my best friend and his family. The way they handled Shawngela was so gross. Also, the fact that they had to get Shawn and Maya's mother together (tf even was her name?) was so stupid considering the original show had Jonathan Turner who was like a father to Shawn and he hadn't adopted him or married one of his parents. And Feeny treated Shawn, Cory, Topanga, and Eric as if they were his kids. He wasn't biologically related to him in the way. It's as if the show thought everyone was stupid and would forget how Shanwgela "ended" on Boy Meets World, with Shawn telling Angela that she should go spend time with her dad while she had the chance because he couldn't get that with his own father.
What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
I watched Gmw before BMW and I had a completely different visual for Angela. When her moments were showed, I was like “is this the right woman?” I legitimately thought there was gonna be another Angela or she was gonna switch up on Shawn.
Something that’s always confused me about Angela’s departure on BMW is how the show positions Angela accepting Shawn’s proposal as a means for her to stay with Shawn instead of going with her father, since Shawn could go with Angela to Europe if they get married. I figure Angela’s father is allowed to take Angela to Europe since they’re family, so if Shawn and Angela get married, Shawn could be allowed to go to Europe with the Moores due to being Angela’s spouse and in turn family. Granted, I don’t know much about the military so maybe this isn’t allowed, but I’ve always felt like a more fitting ending for BMW would be Shawn and Angela saying their goodbyes to Cory, Topanga, and the rest of the cast as they go to Europe and truly “meet the world” together.
Y'know, if they wanted to do Shawns new relationshiip as "realism"....wouldn't it make more sense for Maya to try setting him up with her mom and it NOT working out? Like, they try to make it work because they get along alright and both care about her, but after a few dates its just not meshing between them and they have to tell her that? But then they can tell her they both still care a lot about her and Shawn promises he's not going to just ditch her because he isn't her step-dad. I dunno, Just a thought
Also, I kind of get Maya and Riley, and maybe their friends, being weird about Angela being back in town because they're so invested in the ship but the adults being so weird about her, especially Topanga considering they were apparently best friends, is just stupid.
I will ALWAYS be a gmw hater bc of what they did to Angela and Shawn’s relationship. Literally my blood boils if I think about this for too long. Looking back I should’ve had low hopes bc of how they wrote all those other topics.
I knew this plot line ending was terrible but your deep dive shows me it was even worse than I remember! Hurricane Katrina !! HUHHH!!! Not to mention how terribly they wrote the only other black “main” character Zay. It’s actually so sick 😭
Here's how I would've rewrote mayas arc along with Shawn, Angelas, and Katys. Maya would've either been a child in the foster care system at the very start of the series or would've been living with her mom until later on. In both cases, she would have met Shawn and Angela (a MARRIED) couple who decide to adopt her (if Maya was living with her mom, she would've agreed to have her adopted by Shawn and Angela so she could've had a better life with them and maybe in the finale we could've seen an older Maya meeting up with her mom again.)
As you were showing the first clips I thought to myself "wow I never realized this show was so white as a kid" and then you mentioned it 30 seconds later lol
Cory could have easily been written as a father figure if Maya was in such a need for one. Angela and Shawn's story was so sweet and way more sincere. I just don't get what the writers were thinking 😭
I’m so glad you said it! Shawn was PRESSURED AND low-key forced to not only be Maya’s dad but also marry her mom all at the expense of Angela’s character 💀 someone who was not only Shawns love interest but Corey and Tapangas close friend
My mouth DROPPED at 37:37, that’s an insane statement. Shawn AND Angela always made it very clear to Corey and Topanga they were not them. Yea, sometimes Shawn would say he wanted what Corey had…but no no no he was very cognizant that his relationship with Angela was independent from his best friend’s relationship. There’s a reason sometimes Corey/Topanga were off but Shawn/Angela were on and vice versa - neither couple was being influenced by the other.
Topanga being so close to Angela and then for them never knowing of her also made me sick. I’m still friends with my friend even though she lives in Europe and I don’t.
I think it is also because boy meets world was aired on abc so their show did not have to fit into the confines of a disney channel series, but Girl meets world was solely produced by disney channel which is extremely more conservative and mainly aimed towards children. It is kind of sad that the writers felt like in order for the show to succeed they had to villainize anything that was different in order to appeal to the network, when it would have been healthier for children to portray differences in a positive light.
I honestly feel like the show would've been better suited had it aired on ABC or Freeform instead of DC. Yes, BMW had previously aired on DC but only in reruns so I don't count that.
Girls Meet Trash was just hard-core mediocre trash. I will never forgive them for what they did to Angela, especially with them putting that party city wig on her
Gmw could NEVER be like BMW. On BMW the actor's chemistry and the storylines were unmatchable and seemed so genuine Gmw couldn't capture that in a million years BMW had depth and real emotion gmw is nothing but some immature clearance section Great Value knockoff !
The Angela episode would have made so much more sense if she was still friends with Topanga and came to talk to her about her nerves about having kids. Corey could still be sore because he was always over dramatic and saw things from very narrow often false povs that helped reestablish his worldview. But Shawn could have been there with Maya when she was waiting for Topanga and he could have introduced her as an ex girlfriend and kept talking nicely until Topanga showed up and Angela could leave saying something like, "I wish i could have hung out with my dad like that when i was her age." Maya could have been happy about someone thinking they were father/daughter but also worried that he might marry someone beside her mom and stop caring about her. At the end of the episode she might be telling Riley all of this when Angela walks in the coffee shop before she plans to head out of town and she stops by to say bye to "her friend's daughters." Maya might break down crying and say she's not actually Shawn's kid. Angela could say she already knew that but whenever she talks to Shawn he talks about her like an excited dad and Maya didn't need to worry about Shawn ever stopping because he's loyal to the people he loves, and he really loves her. Angela could still be married to someone else because I wouldn't have been able to trust these writers with her as a regular character.
That would have been an AWESOME storyline that would have covered things well (with dramatically rewarding life lessons for virtually all the characters) but too bad the GWM writers just brought Angela in to have her jeered at by all (save Shawn) with no one thinking of the possibility of her being part of their friend circle even after she made it clear she had married someone else and had no more romantic interest in Shawn!
they could have at least had it where Maya was in a similar situation to Shawn in season 3 of BMW where both her parents abandoned her and Shawn does what Turner wasn’t ready to do and adopts her and becomes a single dad then later runs into Angela, reigniting the flame. They get married and Maya has a family , what she always wanted. That would’ve been far more interesting. But anyway, thanks for confirming that I should never finish GMW
True that! Topanga was rewriting history (and also totally ignoring the fact that Angela had been HER best friend and even one of her bridesmaids)! Oddly enough, this was one of the very few times on GMW Topanga wasn't treating Shawn as though he was beneath contempt due to the fact that Cory valued their friendship and wasn't as contemptuous to Cory as SHE was! Yeah, Cory and Topanga's GMW utterly STANK!
@@wardarcade7452 no literally!!! I hated the change especially not having Angela in GMW is outrageous. Topanga supposedly being besties with Maya’s mom when they haven’t had more than maybe one episode bonding is so random. No sorry I’m not accepting that 😭
@@ashwrld4615 Not to mention that Katy was Topanga's employee. Hardly a level playing field (and I don't put Topanga or Riley above holding that fact over Katy or Maya's respective heads).
I'll never count girl meets World as canon... At least not fully i like the father-daughter storyline but he didn't need to marry her mom, maybe they could have handled it but instead maybe Maya that the man has a life too
Shawn should have left with Angela and her dad im BMW. They didnt have to do her so dirty. Also i am kind of annoyed Rider went along with this story line.
The only thing I love from Girl Meets World is the relationship between Riley and Farkle, like that’s REAL love🫶could’ve been the new & improved Cory and Topanga
5:49 This. This can go the same for Kpop, or black girls being seen with Asian men in Media. (Hispanic/Latino is the same but not as bad as with an asian man or indigenous (which is going to be even harder for the fact indigenous representation is Non-exisitant aside from RACISM or Jokes.) The way people thoroughly hate it, will make sure they never KISS, never seen get close to thinking about Marriage let alone, dating or even CRUSHING. A good example of Black Women dealing with hardships of Asian/Black Anything can dig all the way into fandoms as well (shows, Movies, Kpop). Example: K-music and Black women had a channel dedicated to showing fan cams of black girls and Kpop idols interacting, and she did it in a manner only black girls can understand. However she did cross the line with fetishizing, but that wasn't a reason to dox, and threaten to murder the creator. It got so bad, fellow black fans also joined in which is a shame, and goes to show not everyone is down with you, even if it was a service to you at some point. While I also, agree, the fetish was wild. but not enough to want to end her life. If a black girl is paired with an Asian boy (Or any race that isn't a black man now and days.) be ready to see a plethora of: 1. She should be with (Black Co-Star) 2. I don't like her, she's Mean, rude, a B---h, a s--t, etc (all the hateful stuff you can think of.) 3. Racism. 4. COVERT RACISM. 5. They wouldn't work together because of (Love interest's mental health, goals in life, etc. example: The Bear, People can't fathom the idea of Carmen even liking Sydney, not even a little. 6. They CLEARLY HAVE NO CHEMISTRY, (even though these characters are literally eyeing ducking each other so much, I have to leave my room to give them space. ((Sydney and Carmen from the bear)) I could of missed some but, just know this shit runs deeeeeeeeeep, so deep!! Jet-li and Aaliyah (Romeo must die), Adam and Tanya (Power Rangers season 3-4), Mika and Raizo (Ninja Assassin) couldn't do a kiss, or romantic anything for the fact the directions/writers would be scared of the Audiences reception to it. Cinderella, Brandy's version got a lot of flack for the kiss, or relationship with her and the prince. (Lots of angry conservatives.) and it still is a problem today because people avoid the topic of racism as if it's demonic. (which it is, but exorcist exist for a reason. :D) I would love to see a topic on Asian Men/Black Women Relationships, and how it's literally shunned in comparison to Black Men and Asian Women. I'm getting an idea that people think women shouldn't have a say in who they would want to be with. Example: I want to date an Atsushi Sakurai look alike. I've been hounded for this as a Bed Wench, A Traitor by In*el black men....it's wild. These same dudes who talk dirty about black women/fat Black women are the same who will getting angry at the fact you are not with a black man. (The Sticky Dejinay situation where she found a cute boyfriend who is also happens to be Hawaiian, made sticky mad, even though he dogged her out ALL of the time. She even LEFT her boy for sticky who still stayed the same and mistreated her.) Also, that Hurricane Katrina reference to Angela coming back into Shauns life, is not only gut wrenching, but beyond disrespectful and distasteful and full of covert racism. While many many were devastated, New Orleans happens too to be the most populated with Black People. This doesn't help, knowing how the president let people perish and drown while riding a helicopter. These writers are ALSO part of the problem why presentation with black women is a rocky as it is.
shawn and angela are one of the cutest tv ships ever it’s a damn shame they didn’t do it justice but this show isn’t good even outside of them butchering that so i just pretend it never happened
I watched gmw when I was a kid and I remember not thinking much of Angela, since she was only name dropped from time to time and only appeared once. Now watching this I feel upset on her behalf, and kinda illustrates how bmw is probably a better show
I recently finished BMW cause I also grew up with GMW. And yes, BMW is a MUCH better show, it's actually staggering how bad and butchered GMW is in comparison.
As someone who watched a little bit of Girl meets World (I never liked it even without knowing anything about Boy meets World) I was shocked Angela wasn't just some random side character but actually played a big role I the original show. It's crazy a show in the 90s was more progressive and diverse than the show in the 10s.
Nah because god forbid we have the *interracial* relationships- They did not have to do her like that. Also am I supposed to feel bad that the little white blonde girl gets pissy that she can't force the daddy figure she latched onto to forget someone important to him?? A real life fact is you don't always get what you want and people you know have lives outside of you- I know middle schoolers don't learn that yet but it's a hard lesson.
I think the difference in tone has to do with where BMW was on ABC (originally)and GMW was on Disney. I still love BMW, I wanted to like GMW, but it had that Disney coat of paint where everything was colorful and exaggerated. It could have gotten better in time possibly…
