The Dune Part 2 Trailer Restored My Faith in Cinema

Today I am reacting to the Dune Part 2 trailer starring Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, and Austin Butler. This Warner Brothers movie has a lot of people excited. The first Dune movie went straight on HBO Max when released so I think the Dune sequel has a huge chance of doing much better than the first movie. Here I point out why I think Dune part looks like real cinema in this trailer reaction/ breakdown.

That's because the director respects the source material and not only makes amazing films but also he loved the Dune books and wanted to make a faithful adaptation. That's what happens when someone gives their story quality and doesn't care only for profit.

@@ErgoDog he really didn’t. It had to be paired down, but it’s still very cool. It means you gain a great deal by reading the book even if you’ve seen the movie. I’ve taken to calling it “minimum viable Dune”.
@margaret7949
@margaret7949 Год назад
@@ErgoDog the first Dune book was really long so if he did all the book in a 2:30 hours it would be rushed and not give the characters time to flesh out. That was smart of him to make it into two parts and the best parts are gonna be added as well. Also Denis said that the books had fights only mentioned in the book, but in the movie we are gonna see more of epic battles.

What i like about Dune that I think Hollywood fails at in other movies....is the action. In other movies, when action scenes happen its treated like visual candy. The feeling watching it is "time for another obligatory action scene with a bunch of living dummies for the hero to beat up!" But with Dune, an action scene hits and the vibe is "this is not something that happens every day. This is serious in this universe. People don't just ride sand worms, they don't just conquer and blow up cities Willie Nillie, this is a world changing event." Literally in almost every major Hollywood film, riding dangerous animals is a fun activity, and entire seaboards get wiped out on an annual basis. It's all just part of the ride. Dune's action isn't just part of the ride, it's a very intense developement in the story of the universe.
@Brittney_Reacts_
@Brittney_Reacts_ Год назад
That’s a very astute point. I love that people actually treat what is happening like a big deal. That’s so rare in movies
@tickingdeath105
@tickingdeath105 Год назад
To me the action scene's aren't the problem, it's the fact that 9/10 times the action has no wieght to it, no stakes for the characters. It's all just "I'm the good guy, guess I'll beat up the bad guy". Don't get me wrong, sometimes mindless action movies can be fun on occasion, but we've had that for so long that hollywood has lost it's originality. Thats why Part 1 hits so much better. It's not something you watch, it's something you experience. The movie has the slow build up to the big battle with plenty of world building and political intrege mixed inbetween. And when the smoke clears after said big battle, the protagonist's are running for their lives, and there people have been completely decimated. The depth of story telling in the sorce material and these newer adaptations are on such a high scale that they're on a level that hollywood, as a whole, has forgotten was even possible.

Dune and its sequel Dune Messiah are incredible books. It’s been likened to sci-fi’s Lord of the Rings. There’s a lot of backstory and genius machinations. The incredible thing about the first two books is that there are no stupid characters. Everybody is intelligent and scheming. Baron Harkonnen is particularly terrifying, because he’s not just cruel and greedy-he’s also brilliant. I highly recommend reading those two books if you can. It will greatly increase the enjoyment of the movies. I am incredibly excited for this to come out. The things that happen in the second half of the book are incredible. It looks like Villeneuve is going to pull it off, if he does this movie will be astounding.

I love how you want Dune Mania to take off...the original book is a mainstay in English language literature, and it's starting to get the attention it deserves (even though one of my all time favorite sci-fi/formerly sci-fi authors isn't crazy about it...oh well.) The Dune: Part 1 proved that Dune is in good hands with Denis Vellenueve, and the trailer for part to--just the trailer!--is far better than whole movies that have been released recently. I love how you dive into cinematography, visual layering, and the cultural aspects of the movie. All of that is on rich display here, and it's great to see someone not only picking up on it, but honestly appreciating it! Watching your reactions and hearing your commentary is a real treat!

The woman in black is probably Lady Margot Fenring a sister of the Bene Gesserit order and the partner of Count Hasimir Fenring the Emperor's right hand man / assassin. Thanks to Lady Jessica messing up the Bene Gesserit breeding program and bearing a son Lady Fenring is sent to Geidi Prime to preserve the genetic lineage of Feyd Rautha (the young Harkonnen man shown right before her) who was originally meant to breed with Jessica's daughter to produce the Kwisatz Haderach. Hasimir himself is a failed Kwisatz haderach and as a result is invisible to Paul's prescience and the man who could well end his life.

I love how you spoke of your love of the shots and the real "film" in the director's vision. I don't ever really think of the Marvel movies and most blockbusters as films. DV is doing something, articulating the story with real techniques that are done for a reason, not just to fit Michael Bay like mild audience pushing. So rare in a movie with this kind of budget and top stars. If they can pull of the 2nd half of the book - which is much more epic and difficult - we are in for an incredible experience.

You know, after seeing the trailer, I actually thought about the black and White acenes of the film, and it kinda gives me the vibes of the perspective of the Harkonnen, in which we have the scenes of Arrakis focused on the colors of the desert and the light of the sun, and the black and white appeal of the Harkonnen. The scenes in which the Harkonnen appear and the color pallette they use is tending for me to be monogamic on purpose, which tightly revolves around their dinamic in each they are a tyrannic people in which they do not see the meaning of Arrakis beyond the spice and the political advantages, therefore their perspective and their shots revolve around the black and white, showing to us the audience their one-sided perspective and beliefs. I could be total wrong about this analysis, but that is what i got watching the trailer.

I have read the book, and while I think it did a very good job in staying true to the source material, I don't think it fully caught everything. FWIW I would recommend reading the book Dune, but personally (just me) I wouldn't bother with the sequels. I think I understand what you mean about Dune as the anti-blockbuster. Yes, its spectacular, but it's telling a story and has themes beyond mere spectacle. Although, talking of spectacle, you say one scene might be Paul's Jesus moment. I can see what you mean, but I think it'll more likely be his Mohammed moment.

I liked it too, but didn't fully connect with it either. Many details have been lost, which for me as a lifelong fan of the book was disappointing even if I understand the need to streamline the story. I also think Denis’ directing style can be a bit slow and ponderous, so I'm hoping he tightens up the pacing and editing a bit for part two. There’s still a lot of ground to cover in the story and his tendency to linger too long on shots makes everything feel more sluggish than it needs to be. In part one he managed to make a knife fight to the death feel a little dull and anticlimactic; It certainly wasn’t how I envisioned it in the book. I still like his take on it, but a little more kinetic momentum and sense of urgency should help it better resonate with global audiences, otherwise his films will keep barely breaking even and we may never see the other books adapted.

The only logical explanation as to why this film has the care and detail of its filmmaking is because the studios and the distribution company fully believe in the director. Giving him the full reins to craft the source materials, from the book, to giving them the money. They now know with the 1st film's success and positive responses from their target audience, hence the book lovers, that they're going to make a ton of bank and for its investors as well. Including of new comers interested of wanting to continue watching Part 2. The director has proven himself to not only be talented film director (I feel somewhat different for some of his films) but also how he's able to intrigue the general audience, film lovers, and film critics to see his actual work fully in theaters. Which once again, he's able to generate the box office numbers for the studios/studio since years of building his reputation. And show casing his talents as a visual storyteller. Most studios aren't willing to give directors the full control of the final film product. Which explains why so many of the high budget films are very similar to one another and following the new cool factor or a certain style for each decade in filmmaking. Hence, why there's saturation problems and tiredness from audiences. In my opinion, I thought the first Dune movie was boring to me, flat characters or lack of growth, and predictable to me. I loved some aspects of the cinematography but there were some nights scenes that I couldn't see what was going on (as usual and an annoying filmmaking style that every director is doing). Yet, the worldbuilding is somewhat intriguing. I just want more than just oh pretty worldbuilding and visual landscapes like. I want a story. So hopefully Part 2 has a story.

Visually it's stunning but I struggled to get through part 1. The soundtrack overshadowed the action, important parts of book swapped out for long and repetitive desert shots. I was really looking forward to this adaptation.

It"s actually more back to the roots then.that new. It"s like watching a good Shakespeare adaptation instead of a bad game of thromes clone

me my dad and 2 friends went to go see it and i was so confused but i liked it but after i looke it up and apparently it was starwars before starwars and it inspired george lucas for starwars and i believe the creator of star trek aswell so basically dune is the last book to have an adaptation thats good BUT IT LIKE A STAPLE IN THE SCI-FI GENRE NOBODY EVER DISCUSSED

I suppose I watch this one also when it ia relesed on bluray... part 1 was ok though I realy hope this new one is better and has more ... well everything that makes movie great 🙄 personally I prefer the SyFy's mini-series (have youbseen those?). Sure, CGI in those are not great but everything else is. The colours, directing, cast, charactera, S O U N D T R A C K ❤️

It's kind of funny that you mention Dune inspiring copies when the novels were the inspiration for hundreds, if not thousands of sci-fi stories that focused on world-building and epic, eon-spanning plots. What you said about costumes makes a lot of sense. The things characters wear should feel like they are what would actually be used in those situations: worn, comfortable, familiar. That said, Irulan's chain-mail outfit is an invention of the filmmakers. She has a much smaller role in the book, which I don't mind being expanded on here. She comes into her own later, in Dune Messiah and Children of Dune, which I hope they try to adapt. I'm very curious about the black-and-white treatment of the Giedi Prime sequences. Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen is going to get much more screentime here than in the David Lynch film, and this is good because he's Paul's evil counterpart. He needs to be built up as a serious threat.

All the credit for the visual style goes to the people making these movies. The books rarely describe how things actually look. It's mostly internal dialogues and philosophy from various characters perspectives.. which might sound boring, but Frank Herbert pulled it off, cause he's just that weird

I wouldn't say that I want Dune copies. I find when Hollywood does that that most of their efforts feel underwhelming/terrible. A good example of that being the copying of Chicago's aesthetic and stylism into Sweeney Todd (which was good) but also into parts of Phantom of the Opera, Into the Woods, and Les Miserables which were bad, boring, and bad in that order. I would prefer that Hollywood takes inspiration from this "anti-blockbuster" and chooses to be creative instead of rushing out the latest example of CGI hell that their underpaid, overworked, and understaffed workers could cobble together in as little time as possible.

9:30 the timeline for the Dune series is over tens of thousands of years. So it’s safe to tell you - everyone dies 😉

I liked the movie well enough, but I did not like their portrayal of the voice. Plus them leaving out the baliset entirely...that was unironically a very important part of the story. But I did love the movie. I'm curious how they'll make the second half true to the book, since the focus of the story was never combat and it's almost entirely on abstract ideas and politics. Well, combat prowess is a big focus, but the fight scenes themselves were not.

My nitpick of this trailer is just Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler and Florence Pugh.

I just wish people would stop helping to perpetuate this false narrative that Dune is "real and practical"; It had lots of CGI. Part One had over 1700 VFX shots, which is even more than Star Wars: Rogue One. Let's just appreciate how tastefully the live action and CG are so cohesively blended together that it "feels" real. That's what we should be celebrating, not throwing VFX teams under the bus as though they're this dirty secret to sweep under the rug. Too many movie promotional campaigns have been doing this lately, even by cast and crew who should know better.
